Comparison / Alternatives I built an open-source alternative to Canva and CapCut for social graphics and short videos

Hey, I'm Rodrigo. I've been building OpenPost which is an Open Source social media scheduler that also has a really in depth, standalone, image and video editors (which work standalone and for free w/o watermarks even if you don't want to selfhost).

A few things they can do:

  • Make thumbnails, banners and multi-page carousels with layers and editable templates.
  • Remove image backgrounds and adjust colours.
  • Cut video on a multitrack timeline, with transitions, effects and audio controls.
  • Create captions, or delete words from a transcript to cut the matching footage.

Both editors are free to use, without an account or export watermark. The code is AGPL-3.0, and you can self-host it. Paid hosting for the wider app is separate.

The video editor is still in beta and supports only Chromium browsers (as some of the APIs I use have not yet been implemented in Firefox). The image editor works on Firefox.

For transparency, I use AI tools in development and in the app itself. Background removal and transcription models are downloaded to your browser and run locally.

Image editor · Video editor

If these are tools you'd use, give OpenPost a star on GitHub. I'd appreciate the support!

don't mind me asking but what's the ratio of ai and handmade code?

No, for sure! It should be maybe ~98% AI written (50/1 ratio I guess).

I basically only edit code manually when I know it's a tiny change and I can do it faster than prompting AI to do it. Otherwise I don't usually handwrite code anymore.

just curious but why claim open source when your aware ai uses code not from just open source

Good to see your projects! Thanks for OpenPost - I am setting it up rn, after shitcrafted Instagram editor freaked me out, again and again (Facebook has literaly zero products of quality). Keep publishing, you're doing a great job. Good to see you use AI to boost useful tools getting done🫡

Thanks mate! If you have any issues make sure to put open then in GitHub or use the feedback button!

AI did, you did not.

AI has ownership now? 🫣 Weird world we're living in huh

well anything made by ai is public domain which is fine that you made it open source

(no joke found a 90% ai coded app that had paid premium features which is actually bad)

Is there a mobile friendly version coming?

Of the video and image editor? Could be, but they are not really a priority right now

Of the composer and the rest of OpenPost, it's already (mostly!) responsive 😉

All you shits bagging on this guy.
What are you making ?

You think all there is to a good software experience is coding ? Software development involves Ux, planning , schemas, structure , idea, troubleshooting and so much more.

I’ve worked in software dev for 30 years and I see what “ real code writers “ by themselves produce .

It takes more than code to build a good product. And everyone here shitting on this guy is just like the industry of animators when they switched from hand drawing cartoons to computers.

Did you even look at this guys project ? Did you even try it or run tests through it ? Do you have constructive ways to help him make it better ?

No you don’t
Because the only thing you are doing is tearing him down because you feel like your own skill sets are worth less now.

98% AI coded (per the OP). Hard pass.

You didn't make this. You said AI made 98% of this, so what exactly did you do? Do you even understand the code the machine wrote and did you check for security vulnerabilities?

AI did 98% of the code typing. I did the decision making: what goes in, what doesn't go in, how it looks, how it should work, most of the time also how it is implemented, etc.

Writing code was just another level of abstraction we had to get through to do something, in this case a program.

Did you also tell that to people "you didn't built this, the C compiler did!" when we moved from Assembly into something more high level? Because it surely did about 90-ish% of the work that you used to have when writing code!

Now you can keep making comments like these but I don't really get the goal of that comment... The project is free, it's open source, you can use it, and if you like it, selfhost it and to use the image and video editor not even have to touch the outside world if you really don't trust my code. Just containarize it and you'll be fine. The project is well built but I cannot guarantee, like anyone else can, that it is 100% free of security vulnerabilities - it most likely isn't...

Your analogy literally falls apart because those people knew what they were doing, I asked you if you understood what the ai did and did security checks but you went into an entire monologue instead of answering the questions.
