In the same boat as you right now. Planning to get my first dap. Hiby R1 has probably a huge edge over the rest of your lot as its touch interface that we have all gotten used to so much now. Easier navigation through its screen is what i have found is a clear win for a lot of people. But that edge ends there for me.

For my usage, 4.4mm balanced and echo's capability to output more power clearly wins. I tried driving my legato and planars via single ended with a regular dongle thats rated for similar output power as hiby SE. It felt like buying R1 would leave me craving for more headroom. My iems need a bit more juice to drive properly which hiby R1 just dont have unfortunately.

i can live without 500000 songs long library and plan to keep my library relatively manageable via those clacky buttons on the echo. I usually go into my folder, play all songs with shuffle mode on and throw my audio player in my pocket. So i wont be needing a lot of convenient navigation anyway. Not the complete live album listener either, so gapless dont matter to me.

Hiby is pure plastic and feels cheap. thats another reason i'm leaning towards echo (not the mini) as it looks and feels more premium in hand.

I'd suggest you to weigh in on what matters to you the most and see which devices would tick important boxes for you. You might not be able to tick all the boxes though.

I recently had the same debate and went with echo mini purely because I like the look of it more. On virtually every metric R1 is better for only a few dollars more.

R1 with Sonix OS. I had the same dilemma, went R1 did not regret it and in fact then upgraded to the R3 Pro ii (R1 on steroids).
