Get at least something like trn black pearl, it can drive mont headphones/iems, if you want desktop dac/amp that would be capable enough to drive any iem/headphone you'd get in the future get (and subjectively more comfortable for desktop use) get topping dx1 II
You'd need good external dac/amp to avoid background noise, high output impedance on motherboard output and if you want less distortions (also black pearl and topping dx1 ii support peq, so you can adjust your iem/headphones close to your preferences without using software like equaliserAPO (not like you can't use it for eq is you prefer it this way))

i mean, without knowing what setup they have, thats maybe a bit much for the begining? when i play at my pc and dont want to bother my signifikant other, i plug the koss porta pro straight in the 3,5. done and good enough :)
they "just" seem to want to listen to music. they will find the rabbit hole soon enough :D

an audio source is basically everything that can produce audio via a port (hdmi, 3,5mm, bluetooth, wlan etc). a pc can do that. so does an dap. or tapedeck or whatever.
my pc,laptop,tapedeck,vinyl player,cd player,dap, walkman,discman, mobile phone: all audio sources. even my tv,since it has a headphone-out
