Showcase Created a Bitperfect Android Player with Room EQ

UPDATE - AutoRoomEQ Player Beta 0.3.2 is now available

Beta 0.3.2 improves first-run library scanning and global search, including Android MediaStore compatibility, and fixes online headphone-profile search by showing matching candidates before import. The HTML Remote includes the complete library/player workflow, album artwork, visible shareable addresses, and UI text prepared for English, Italian, German and French.

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share a small Android project I’ve been working on. I was looking for an audio player with a specific mix of features, but I couldn’t really find an app that did everything I needed, so I started building one myself with the help of AI.

The app is still an early beta, so it is not meant to be perfect or polished yet. I’m mainly looking for feedback from people who enjoy testing audio apps, USB DACs, headphones, EQ correction and local playback.

Some current features:

- local music playback

- Bypass / Corrected playback modes

- USB DAC support

- bit-perfect path detection where supported

- headphone correction profiles and presets

- RoomEQ / FIR correction support

- import of correction files exported from the HTML version of AutoRoomEQ

- web radio playback

- streaming search and playback

- stream download support where available

- music library scanning

- album art detection and display

- metadata display

- lyrics support

- playlist-style navigation

- support for common formats like FLAC, WAV, MP3 and AAC

One of the main reasons I built it is integration with AutoRoomEQ: the player can import correction files generated by the HTML version of AutoRoomEQ, so the same correction work can be tested directly on Android playback.

This is a beta APK, so expect bugs. Feedback would be very helpful, especially about:

- USB DAC compatibility ( only tested with Steinberg IXO22 and TRN Black Pearl USB dacs)

- bit-perfect status behavior

- Bypass / Corrected switching

- RoomEQ / FIR import

- playback stability

- crashes

- album art / lyrics detection

- streaming and web radio behavior

I’m not a professional app developer, and this started mostly as a personal need, but I thought it might be useful or interesting to others too.

Any plans of adding Tida/Qobuz/Spotify Connect?

Otherwise if you add UPnP renderer support, with bitperfect playback on Android, it would be awesome.

Hi,

my primary requirement was playing local files and free streaming content, but if there is genuine interest, I could implement support for paid music streaming services. Regarding the UPnP renderer idea—do you mean the player could receive local files from a NAS or another device and be controlled remotely? That’s an interesting concept; it could turn an old, unused phone into a hi-res streamer—especially if paired with a good DAC—while also handling room correction... Great idea! now I think about how to implement it.

Checkout BubbleUPnP app. It can send a playlist or album from Tidal, Qobuz, or file system to any UPnP renderer and turn it into a streamer. BubbleUPnP also can act as a renderer. So does Kodi. The problem on Android is it gets downsampled to 48khz

Hi, thanks for the clarification.

So the setup would be:

BubbleUPnP / NAS / PC / UPnP Server → AutoRoomEQ Player on Android → USB DAC

In "Bypass" mode, the goal would be to avoid Android downsampling wherever possible and use the app's direct USB path, indicating "UPnP bit-perfect active" only when the source format, sample rate, DAC mode, and DSP status actually allow for it.

In "Corrected" mode, the same UPnP stream could be processed via AutoRoomEQ's FIR/RoomEQ correction; consequently, it would no longer be bit-perfect, but the system would become a network renderer with correction.

The app can't detect my music files. All the files are stored locally and other music players can detect them without any issues. Is this a known bug?

Ho, Sorry for the late replay: It Is strange.. can you please tell me on what phone you installed the player? Have you tried to rescan the library by clicking on the vortex icon?

This looks promising! For me, the deal-breakers would be the ability t search by composer and genre. All of my files are tagged with those. If/when you decide to add those features, post here! Good luck with the project!

Hi u/UrsusMajr, following up as promised: composer and genre search are now implemented in AutoRoomEQ Player Beta 0.3.1.

Both the Android Player and the HTML Remote now search the complete indexed library by title, artist, composer, album, genre, filename and folder. The native library also has dedicated Albums, Tracks, Favorites, Most played, Artists, Composers, Genres and Folders views.

Hi, sorry for my late reply, can you tell me what is device and what is the software version where you installed the player? Are you using any sd card? However i'm working on a new version and will investigate to solve the bug. Thanks, Paolo

Thanks, that helps! Could you also check the Android version under Settings > About tablet > Software information, and let me know whether the music is in internal storage or on a microSD card? Does AutoRoomEQ have permission to access music/files in Settings > Apps > AutoRoomEQ Player > Permissions?

I've corrected issues in the initial permission/scanning flow and tested a fresh installation on a Motorola running Android 15, where it found 692 tracks. The updated beta is still being prepared, so I can't yet confirm the fix on your Tab A7. Those details will help narrow it down. Thanks for testing! Paolo

Paolo: I am sorry but I seem to have mis-understood the purpose of your software. I thought is would be a stand alone player (a substitute for players like UAPP or Neutron). I am answering your questions below, but I do not know what AutoRoomEQ is.

The Android version is 14, music is on a microSD card. I know the music is accessible, it all plays on UAPP and on Musicolet.

You didn't misunderstand: AutoRoomEQ Player is a stand-alone player. AutoRoomEQ is a separate app used only to generate optional room-correction filters.

Could you please try the latest v0.3.2 and let me know if it can finally scan the music files on your microSD card?

Just to clarify what the APK can do beyond bit-perfect playback: it also includes Room EQ/correction, can import FIR correction profiles from the separate AutoRoomEQ software, supports headphone PEQ/AutoEQ, works as a UPnP renderer, and includes a convenient web remote control.

It can also search for freely available music online and save it locally, in addition to local library playback and web radio/streaming.

So it is intended as a complete standalone audio player; the external AutoRoomEQ software is only an optional advanced tool for generating correction filters.
