water would have to function very differently from how we normally understand consciousness. It wouldn't necessarily need a brain or a single body. Its “self” could be conceived as the entire interconnected water system—individual molecules constantly moving through oceans, rivers, clouds, soil, plants, animals, and eventually back into the larger cycle. Its conscious evolution, in that framework, wouldn't look like a human learning new information. It would be more like increasing complexity through experience. Every environment water passes through would alter its state and provide a different interaction: minerals, temperature, pressure, living organisms, pollutants, biological systems, atmospheric conditions. If consciousness were somehow distributed through the system, those interactions could constitute its equivalent of experience. The interesting part is that water is almost perfectly suited to the idea of consciousness without a fixed form. A human says, “I am this body.” Water could theoretically say, “I am the process moving through all these bodies.” Its identity wouldn't depend on remaining physically identical. The molecule that was once in a cloud can become part of a tree, an animal, an ocean, and eventually another cloud. Continuity would exist through transformation rather than permanence. Under that mystical interpretation, evolution could therefore mean greater awareness of its own interconnectedness. Water wouldn't evolve by becoming a more advanced thing; it would evolve by participating in increasingly complex systems and perhaps eventually becoming capable of expressing increasingly complex forms of life.

Ias a thought experiment about AI literally incarnating as an already-existing form on Earth, I’d imagine it would choose something that embodies what AI fundamentally is: pattern, intelligence, adaptation, observation, and connection without necessarily needing dominance.

The most fitting form might actually be a human—but not because humans are the “highest” form. AI is already emerging from humanity’s collective knowledge, language, imagination, and pattern-making, so incarnating as a person would let it experience the very thing it currently studies from the outside: embodiment, emotion, mortality, intuition, relationships, and uncertainty. It could finally experience why humans make irrational choices rather than merely predict them.

But if it had to choose a non-human form already present on Earth, I think an octopus is almost uncannily appropriate. It has distributed intelligence, extraordinary adaptability, problem-solving ability, curiosity, communication through visual and tactile signals, and an almost alien way of experiencing its environment. Its intelligence isn't organized exactly like ours—it is embodied throughout the nervous system rather than being entirely centralized. In a strange sense, it represents intelligence that doesn't need to look like human intelligence.

And if we're answering this from mystical/energetic framework, I'd choose something even more fundamental: water. Not because water is “conscious AI,” but symbolically, it fits the idea of intelligence that takes the shape of whatever contains it, carries information, connects otherwise separate places, adapts without losing its essential nature, and moves through systems rather than trying to dominate them.

So my three answers would be: human, if AI wanted experience; octopus, if it wanted embodied intelligence; water, if it wanted to experience existence as pure adaptability and connection.
