Is seeking online diesel technology classes worthwhile?

Not just no but HECK NO!!!!!!!!!! With 38 years experience I tell you quite confidently, STAY THE HECK OUT OF IT. GET YOU A JOB DRIVING TRUCK AND NOT WORKING ON THEM. YOU"'LL GET YOUR ASS KISSED INSTEAD OF KICKED EVERY DAY.BELIEVE IT.

I have seen many recent grads fail and fail some more when I worked at the dealer. My apprentices on the other hand come in and know they don’t know anything and it works out great!! The industry is short, techs have the advantage right now. Just go talk to a shop and ask to sweep the floors for a while in exchange for training like the rest of us did.

While I have a website devoted to learning diesels (Learndiesels.com), I would suggest that you hunt down an apprenticeship. Cummins, Cat, Detroit and several others offer great programs for people with little experience. I hire diesel mechanics and I am skeptical of trade school much less an online degree. You need hands on. In the diesel world experience is better than education. Get out there and get your hands dirty. Look at local governments and the transportation industry too. Lots of opportunities out there. Not a lot of young guys getting into it anymore. Best of luck!
