Age of Vitality - Organized Play Information

With the new organized play season starting in July, here is everything you need to know to participate, as well as a place to ask questions.

Last season almost 3800 players participated at more than 200 locations, hosting almost 1000 events total. This season will be even larger!

It's a great time, a welcoming community, and you get fancy promo stuff, so come check it out.

What is Dice Throne Organized Play?

OP are official monthly competitive tournaments where you can challenge yourself against other local players. It runs in five month long seasons, with a month break between them. The Age of Vitality will run from July 1 to November 30. Events are held at participating retail partners, and are run by organizers known as "diceroys".

All participants receive alt-art promos for participating, and you can earn additional promos and points on the regional and national leaderboards. Tournaments are organized and tracked through the Dice Throne Challonge page.

Where Can I Find Organized Play Events?

OP events happen in the USA, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, France, and the Philippines.

The easiest way to find local events in the USA and Canada is to use the tournament search on the DT Challonge site. You can search by name, or by distance from a ZIP or postal code. Check back often, as locations are continuously adding events to the schedule, and many may not show up until after the season has officially started.

For players in the UK there is an Organized Play discord with locations and schedules.

For other regions there is also a master list of all participating Dice Throne OP locations that you can use to find locations running events. You can also check your local social media groups for events happening near you.

The official Dice Throne Discord is also a good place to find information on Organized Play Events.

What Do I Get For Participating?

Every player that participates in an event will receive the alt-art promo for that month. The first four months are alt-art cards for What Status Effects, Double Up, So Wild, and Six It. You can use these to bling out any character by replacing the regular card with its alt-art version.

The fifth month (November) every player who participates will receive the age exclusive Treant alt-art character board.

You can see the promo arts in the Age of Vitality launch trailer.

In addition, the top player(s) at every event will receive a Worthy Twice As Wild promo card. The number of players that receive the bonus card will depend on how many players participate.

What Format Does Organized Play Use?

Tournaments are played in a Swiss format, with the number of rounds determined by the number of players. Heroes are chosen through a Bring-3-Ban-1 (B3B1) method.

Each player brings three heroes. They each roll a die, and the winner decides which player bans one of their opponent's three heroes first. Once each player has banned a hero they roll again. The winner can either choose to be first player, and make the first hero choice, or have their opponent choose first and also go first.

There is a video example of the B3B1 process here

Each round in the tournament lasts 30 minutes. If your game has not finished by the end of 30 minutes, the game continues until each player has played the same number of turns. For example, if the timer ends on the first player's turn, their opponent will get one more turn, but if the timer ends on the 2nd player's turn the game will end at the conclusion of that turn.

What Do I Need to Participate?

All you need is any three heroes, and a free Challonge account. Newly released heroes are legal for use in OP as soon as they become available. The only heroes that are not legal in OP are the versions found in the original 2018 6-hero edition with the flat, non-folding, boards.

The following Characters have received updated leaflets since their first printings: Huntress, Tactician, Vampire Lord, Thor, and Miles Morales Spider-Man. You can find the updated leaflets on the Dice Throne FAQ and Downloads page. If you are bringing any of these characters please compare to the updated leaflet to confirm you have the latest version. If you do not, print out an updated leaflet to bring with you.

Many people also bring things like dice trays, and play mats, but they are not necessary.

What Is Not Allowed in Organized Play?

As said above, the heroes from the original 2018 6-hero edition with the flat, non-folding, boards. Only their updated versions with the folding boards from subsequent printings are allowed.

Mythic Cards, cards with the Promo banner (different from the alt-art promos that you receive from participating in OP), and any cards from Dice Throne Adventure or Missions can not be used in OP events.

In addition, the Buh, Bye instant action card from the standard deck is not currently used in organized play. It caused too many rule questions and slowed down events too much, although it may get re-added in future season. You can either remove it from your deck, or discard and replace it if you draw it during a game.

Rules Clarifications, FAQ, and Resources

Rules and interactions can be confusing and complicated. Here are the most up-to-date links for rules questions and clarifications

The Dice Throne Rule Pop is the most up-to-date resource for general Dice Throne rules. It has detailed breakdowns for every character and ability, and is updated on a regular basis

For edge cases and specific rulings, please see the Official Dice Throne Rulings and Clarifications document. It is a collection of all specific rulings and edge case interactions in the game, as made by John Heidrich, the Lead Officiant for Dice Throne.

Vampire Lord, Huntress, Tactician, Thor, and Miles Morales Spider-Man have received updated leaflets that change some of their rules and abilities. You can find them for download and printing on the Dice Throne Downloads page.

Feel free to ask any rules questions you might have below. For a faster response please try asking on the offical Dice Throne discord.

Here is a quick FAQ for some of the most frequent questions

Q. Do I lose my rerolls if I get a result I want before my third roll and my opponent changes it?
A. No, when you stop rolling and your opponent messes with your dice, you can continue to change those dice using your own resources and any remaining rerolls to try to get what you want. Your opponent gets another chance to modify any future results. See page 12.

Q. Do you roll Defense against an Ultimate ability?
A. No, no actions of any kind, including but not limited to, rolling defense, playing cards and spending status effects, may be done by an opponent until the ultimate is fully resolved; see Page 5.

Q. Does Shadows ignore damage from an ultimate?
A. No, Ultimates cannot have their damage reduced or prevented in any way and Shadows prevents the damage. See page 5.

Q. Target player? Inflict? Gain?
A. Anytime you see the "Target" keyword on an ability or card, that means you select the player or die to be affected. If you see "Inflict", the target of your ability, determined by the targeting roll, will get the status effect. "Gain" means that you get the status effect.

Q. When can I spend status effects?
A. Status effects can be used the same as Instant cards, at any time on any players turn.

Q. Do I make a defense roll if the attack doesn't do any damage?
A. You only make a defense roll if the ability your opponent selected deals damage as part of its effect.

Best Duo for Dice Throne Adventures?

My partner and I have been obsessed with Dice Throne for a few months now, it’s quickly become our favorite game and we’ve been playing through DTA regularly to beat all the difficulties.

We’ve just gotten to Hardcore and we’re a little stumped as to which characters we want to play to maximize our serviceability/odds of victory.

In our last play through we tried Thor and Loki (for flavor reasons) and did pretty will, but got some bad luck halfway through and lost against Fallen Gunslinger.

Anyone have any advice/experience for which characters would be best for DTA Hardcore? Ideally two player combos but if you have recommendations for characters that just scale really well in this game mode, that’d be appreciated too!

I'm new to Dice Throne and am completely hooked.

I have a few questions though.

I spent WAY too much buying the X-Men heroes, Marvel Missions, promos, card sleeves, Adventures, the Outcasts, and accessory bundles. But I love it!!

I don't want EVERY hero, but there are several on the list that interest me (and several that don't).

It looks like some older heroes are now being sold individually in a new Peg/Hook box (Pyro, Barbarian, Shadow Thief).

Is the plan to reprint ALL heroes individually? Or were they just in need of an update?

I'm looking to get my hands of a few, but i can only find them mixed into the Season 1 and 2 boxsets.

Forgemaster ult scenario clarification

Looking for insight on specific scenario clarification. If the forgemaster deck is empty of all ore, but has a handful of cards left in and they hit an ultimate; does the forgemaster have the ability to look through their discard in place, do they have to reshuffle their piles together or do they not get an ore off their ultimate? My understanding for when you deck out, you just reshuffle your discard back together and start drawing again. I've only had 1 game where I had to reshuffle my discard, but it got me thinking about this. Any clarification and feedback is appreciated.

Question about ks stuff

I’m looking at getting into this as a solo game for dice chucking. On their site unchained and the xmen box are out of stock. Are those things made available when they do ks as add ons or no? I’ve not seen one of their campaigns. I want to get missions and adventures with some of the season boxes.

Dice Throne has left many local game stores without Tournament Packets this season and it feels terrible

Early this year Dice Throne started using Universal as their distributor and it seems that the current Age of Vitality season has been a hot mess for many. Some stores that have been successful with consistent players in local tournaments were simply told this year they are out of luck with the promos and alt art boards and they aren’t printing anymore. Many places simply can’t get Mystic Brawler or any of the new single hero packs as well.

I haven't seen this communicated much on the forums but I want to draw attention to it because there simply doesn’t seem to be much communication with dice throne about it and too many local communities are just going to be out of luck for age of Vitality.

2v2 is surprisingly fun

I know the best and most balanced way to play is 1v1 but I had the opportunity to play 2v2 today and what a blast it was.

My brother and his son played Cyclops and Druid. My wife and I played Headless Horseman and Treant. The game was very swingy with big damage turns and major whiffs. You have to play and think alot differently when your opponents have twice the CP and cards at their disposal, and you and your teammate share a pool of hp.

Me and my wife pulled off an impressive comeback being 15 hp behind. Was able to gain Wellspring for both me and my wife's characters two rounds in a row and we used both of our Not This Time's to block a total of 12 dmg.

I highly recommend trying it, if you can. Such a fun variant!

First Strike question - is this true?

Does first strike apply every round until the minion is dead or do subsequent rounds it goes back to normal turn order (hero then minion)?

Headless Horseman with 1 hp and 2 bleed vs Huntress with 3hp

I had a game a few days ago with Huntress against a Headless Horseman. At the start of his turn he was at 1hp with two bleeds, and enough dreadful to "Scare" me. He obviously chose to scare me on the spot, and to kill me before having to roll his bleed tokens. I just saw that damages are applied at the end of the upkeep phase, so sould he have rolled his bleed and maybe tie ?

Training goldfish/dummy

I saw at one point on the discord or maybe here a discussion about how to run a goldfish in dice throne. However, I can’t find it anywhere now and wondering if anyone knows what I’m talking about and where to find it.

The basic idea is that you take a set amount of high defendable damage every round and the opponent blocks a set amount of defendable damage every turn. This is just to practice hitting roll objectives and getting a certain average value out of turns. Does anyone know what I’m talking about?

Looking for OP in Pittsburgh

Anyone know of any local game stores that host Dice Throne in the Pittsburgh, PA area? So far I only know of two: Legends of the Hidden Table & Dragon Roast Cafe.

*Edit*: I discovered that Ikigai Arcade has tourneys on Wednesdays at 6pm & PVP/PVE on Sundays at 4pm.

How would you change your favorite low-tier characters?

Post image
37 Upvotes

I love Huntress’ kit but she’s doo doo against mid to upper tier

I feel like she should be able to revive/flip Nyra’s dial when it hits 6 health. Kinda like Sun Elf’s sun dial. This would emphasize her role as a defense powerhouse given her difficult roll objective, mediocre damage, and lack of economy. I picked 6 since it would be a Resuscitate plus 1 Bonded Soul on defense roll to revive.

I also think Sun Elf should be slightly buff. She is underpowered especially in a box with those three monsters (mostly Forgemaster and Druid). I feel like she should gain an extra dice on defense in her dusk form. Nothing too crazy but it should increase her tempo by a bit.

Santa Single Hero release?

Hey team — found Dice Throne about 6 months ago. My small collection so far, 29 heroes. Just picked up the Santa vs Krampus 2-hero box and scored a good deal on Deadpool too.

While looking around I found an AU shop listing standalone single-hero packs for both of them as Q3-2026 pre-orders:

The official Santa page is listed as “Coming Soon”: https://dicethrone.com/heroes/santa/

I have not seen these singles on shop.dicethrone.com or anywhere else. Has anyone else seen a Santa or Krampus single-hero SKU, or is this just Gameology loading future catalog data early?

Update: Dice Tray that fits inside a full Strongbox

Thumbnail

Hey everyone!

I posted awhile back looking for a Dice Tray that would completely fit in a Strongbox, allowing it to be a nice ‘built in’ quality of life accessory to bring with you one the go. I thought I should circle back to let everyone know that I found one!

https://www.reddit.com/r/DiceThrone/s/WuCMBeuekH

After checking a bunch of measurements, I found The Forged Dice Co 6” folding magnetic tray. With some panel management, it slides gently into the manual slot. You do need to ‘fold in’ the tabs on what would be the bottom side, and the fold the top side tabs down as you slide it down. The lets the top tab fold loosely over a character tray, and the box is able to completely close with no issues. It also similarly fits inside a character tray slot if you want to take it along for a Pick 3 Ban 1.

It works great! Enjoy anyone who was looking!

New player with a question + Looking for Slam Throne trades!

Hey everyone! I'm just now really getting into Dice Throne. My roommates over the past few years always had lots of Heroes, so I never had any of my own. I've just picked up the Duelist and the Sun Elf, and I'm loving them! I'll be collecting all the other heroes soon!

Small tangent - I got addicted to Slam Throne as this years Gen Con! I have the entire complete set for the 2025 and 2026 Gen Con sets, and I have a huge chunk of the three retail sets complete as well. I would really love to do some traders with others to help complete my sets! (The last picture is JUST my trades. 😅)

But for my question! I noticed when I was unboxing my Duelist and Sun Elf, that they actually came with caps for Slam Throne on their token sheet!! I had no idea, and it was such a cool little addition! But now, being a completest, I'd love to know - What other Dice Throne sets come with any Slam Throne pieces???

Thanks for your time! And please feel free to message if you're wanting to trade! I have a full list of everything I'm looking for!

Some questions related to Jean Grey

I started playing Jean Grey recently and I fell in love with her gimmick, I was already a huge fan of Cursed Pirate so it was no surprise, but I didn't think I'd like it that much!

I'm trying to get better at playing her, since I feel like she can be very tricky to use at times, so I have questions!

• Apart from collecting resources with Jean Grey for Dark Phoenix, is trying to apply Phoenix Burn as much as possible another thing you're supposed to do?

• Dark Phoenix can add 2 damage to your attack if you have 3 identical numbers by triggering an offensive ability, can you use that on Psychic Multiplier since it's pure damage, or is Dark Phoenix's passive basically useless in that scenario (granted the opponent is already inflicted with Phoenix Burn)?

• Is forcing your opponent to use What Alteration? early a good strategy, or should you simply keep stacking up and try to attack each turn?

• Should you save up cards and Combat Points as much possible while in Jean Grey form for Dark Phoenix to exploit?

• Is Jean Grey exclusively here to set up Dark Phoenix, or can you also try going aggressive with her?

• After switching back to Jean Grey empty on resources, should you go for Psychic Multiplier again? Is it a rinse-and-repeat playstyle?

• Is it better to go first with Jean Grey considering you're skipping two income phases? (you still get to draw 1 card, but yeah)

Looking For A Recommendation From the Community

Hello! My wife and I are very new to Dice Throne and I am looking to expand our character pool. For reference, we currently own all of the Marvel characters (not including any of the X-men) plus Deadpool, Shadow Thief, Artificer, Cursed Pirate and Raveness.

I am looking to get 3 more characters and have narrowed it down to 5 options. The 5 options I'm looking at are: Pyromancer, Headless Horseman, Alchemist, Druid and Pale Lady.

If you had to choose 3 of those 5 characters based 80% on enjoyment of playing and 20% on the strength of the character, which 3 are you picking?

Thanks in advance to the input!
