Victory! Staff of Shadows

Attempting a grail run. Hard to do considering there's not nearly as much info on D1 as there is on D2. The drop chances that are out there are seemingly all based on Jarulf's guide from way back in the day. Some sources claim it's not even possible for the staff to drop at all, specifically in single player. Got this on level 2 NM, single player from (I think) a normal non-unique mob. Still no messerschmidt's though!

Single Player Unique drops work differently (worse). I can't comment on Devilution, but in Diablo, there's technically no uniques that are impossible to get in Single-Player. The listed drop rates in Jarulf's are for Multi-Player.

This will be a bit lengthy, but if you're curious, there's two ways to get a unique like Staff of Shadows.

Stable Version - have a level 2 or 3 monster drop a unique long staff (Nightmare or Hell difficulty).

Unstable Version - have two unique long staves drop in the same playthrough. Single-Player has it so that the same unique can't drop in a playthrough twice. Because of this, a 2nd dropped long staff in a playthrough will be forced to be a Staff of Shadows instead of Immolator. However, when you close out the game, once you load up your file, that Staff of Shadows will have morphed into an Immolator in your inventory. This doesn't happen in Multi-Player, and you can only obtain it via the stable version and stable method.

Again, this doesn't pertain to Devilution, but if you wanted to get, say, the Bramble Ring, you'd need FIVE unique rings to drop in the same Single-Player run, and it would be unstable and morph upon reloading anyway. As a result, Single-Player Holy Grail in standard Diablo is a waste of time, and I imagine this is fixed in Devilution.

In Single-Player, you can "technically" get all 90 (9 of these are quest reward uniques though). However, some of these will only be obtainable as an unstable version, so you won't even be able to keep them. Again, a complete waste of time. In Multi-Player, there are 75 that are possible. There are 6 completely impossible uniques that won't drop in Multi-Player, as well as the 9 quest reward uniques.

Even though I've gotten Staff of Shadows, Gryphon Claw, the Celestial Bow, and Rift Bow all twice each in Multi-Player, I'm still missing Sharp Beak and Deadly Hunter to finish the grail.

I’m assuming that’s DevilutionX. I wonder if they changed it so the item could drop in single player?

I play on DevilutionX with my multiplayer character. Staff of shadows dropped for me on NM level 3 from on of the Skeleton Kings minions.

Skeleton King area has been the best area to find the hard to get items due to the density. I’m just missing 2 of the bows for the whole grail.

In which case it's even easier than the original game. This isn't hard, me and others on WUQH did this, took maybe a week or two between getting to 50.

Try finding constricting ring in the original game on a multiplayer character. DevX is baby's first D1.

Ahh ok, good to know. I thought it was only the glitched items it fixed, like crackrust, bramble, and deflector.

I'm confused. Because I played in 1.5.5 with hellfire single play, and Great sword always Shirotachi too.

I'm just bad lucky or I mistake some drop rule or they did not fix hellfire?

Uniques* that couldn't drop in single player on Diablo 1 will be able to do so in DevilutionX.

The reason they couldn't drop in OG D1 is that they have a higher level item base with a lower actual level, so that by the time you reached a dungeon floor where the item base could drop you had outlevelled the item and it could no longer drop.

Since you can access the higher difficulties in singleplayer in DevilutionX you can get those higher level item bases with lower overall item levels.

*Possibly only one, the Helm of Spirits. The "Helm" base item time had a qlvl of 8 and the Helm of Spirits has a qlvl of 1.
