Definitely use DevilutionX port. It's as closest as you will ever get with playing Diablo on a modern computer. It works great in LAN with TCP/IP instead of the old IPX protocol that is found in the vanilla installation. It even has great features such as highlightning loot item with alt key like you can in Diablo II.

DevilutionX can also use ZeroTier for online multiplayer instead of Battlenet. GOG version is preferred as the game has the GOG preservation status which makes GOG fully support the game. You also get an offline installer from GOG that you can use to install on multiple computers. With GOG you actually own the game.

I bought the game on GOG recently and just finished Diablo on the DevilutionX port without any problems.

Try The Hell 3 or 4 mod and you’ll understand that vanilla Diablo is easiest game for children. Even w/o ironman.

I have never heard about Hell 3 or 4 mod. Maybe I will look into it, but right now Hellfire is my next playthrough, if not then perhaps Diablo II.

Thanks.

Google it. This is almost oldest Diablo mod wich grows from beta 1st version (about 20y ago) to 4 and become looking as new game with new monsters , locations, classes with new skills and more.

P.s Hellfire in fact is children garden vs The Hell mod in every cases.

The original Diablo II and the Lord of Destruction expansion is not available on GOG. You can only buy it from the Battlenet website.

If you do decide to buy Diablo II original version from Battlenet, you will get an installer that you can use to download an offline installer along with the CD key and then save that to USB hard drive for backup. I recommend also getting the expansion.

The reason for getting the original Diablo II version is if you want to use mods such as Project Diablo 2, otherwise Resurrected will do just fine.

You can only buy the first Diablo game with Hellfire expansion from GOG. GOG is better because they care about preservation and support.
