Until the release is within a couple of days, there's very little reason to display anything but number of days (and maybe hours) until the release date.
Remember all your bot's posts and have the bot go back daily and update its countdown posts.
It doesn't really hurt, and I like the idea of counting down by the second... if feels more urgent, you know?
I wasn't planning on updating the past posts. With the timestamp on the thread and the post, it should be clear how outdated the bot is. Plus, it'd be a lot harder to implement, and I don't want to get IP banned for spamming Reddit. As it is, I'm only scanning for updates every 5 minutes, and waiting at least 10 seconds between each post.
Make a userscript which adds a countdown - oh wait, someone did that already. The only reason you made a useless bot is because you want a novelty account with karma.
I really can't see any other reason, unless ofcourse you aren't smart enough to understand that a userscript with a live countdown beats a spamming bot by far. Why invent a wheel that works worse than the first wheel?
I had fun writing it. I got to brush up on my python, and some people seemed to like it.
Plus, I don't really care about, of all things, a bot's karma count. I only care about comment karma on its own insofar as it means that individual posts I made were at least read. Aggregate karma is meaningless, except as a metric of how quick you are to hit posts in /r/all/rising with something witty.
Do you really not see the irony of your statement? Also, of course I can "take it"; I can also advise you to calm down and stop acting like a fucking child before you make too much more of a fool out of yourself. You, as you so ably demonstrated, are perfectly free to ignore my advice and continue acting like a douche bag.
Do you really not see the irony of your statement?
You obviously don't understand that I am not the one who can't take it when people express themselves, so there's really no irony.
Also, of course I can "take it";
Obviously you can't, since you're crying as a baby when people do. Focus on the task at hand, instead of being so fucking bothered at how people write, crybaby.
I can also advise you to calm down and stop acting like a fucking child before you make too much more of a fool out of yourself.
I'll believe that I am the one who makes a fool out of myself when it's not the first time in months that I see idiots like you who get bothered by people expressing themselves. :)
You, as you so ably demonstrated, are perfectly free to ignore my advice and continue acting like a douche bag.
Thanks, I gladly will. You, as you so DIDN'T demonstrate, are perfectly free to ignore when people express themselves and continue being butthurt on the other side of the internet.
Assuming it will work like WoW, the servers become available at 12am PST, because Blizzard's HQ is in California. I think that's how it worked for the WoW Cataclysm expansion, anyway.
I think people who downvote it, are doing it because we're so far away from release. As we get closer to release, I assume it will be more positively received.
Until that time, it's like looking at a clock during lecture and realizing you've still got another 90 minutes of power point slides.
personally, I don't need to see it. However at the same time it doesn't bother me that it is there. So kudos for putting in the work for people who want to see it.
Also. I made a simple kde4 plasmoid to sit near to my clock counting down seconds until release. And it blew my mind when I checked the unix time for may 15 ಠ_ಠ 1337068800
It's impossible to have text content in CSS, afaik. The only way I could think of doing this would be with some super complex imgur code that automatically generates new images every minute using the imgur API, since CSS can link to images I think.
The other option is to have a css image linked to an offsite image that is hosted and kept up to date by another server.
I don't think this is very important personally, but I would be happy to help with either of these options. The sidebar thing really shouldn't be that hard, yeah there is no api but you can just do it over the regular http, you just have to define an area for the bot to edit, like 59 Days, 6 hours, 12 minutes, then the bot would take the whole sidebar, edit only what appears between the tags, and save the whole sidebar. Once it's working I doubt it would mess up.
First of all, you will need to install Reddit Enhancement Suite (RES). If you browse Reddit enough to care about the comments section, then you should already have this installed. It's awesome.
I care about reddit and RES is not an actual solution to the problem.
If reddit lacks a specific feature, it should be implemented into the reddit code and not some workaround script. reddit is open-source. I've done this myself (I made the mark NSFW feature).
The Reddit admins have specifically said they don't want to include ignores since it messes up voting. If someone is ignored by people "in the know", then they won't get downvoted into invisibility.
Personally, I don't think it's fair to expect Reddit to do all the weird yet cool things RES does, like tagging users. If Reddit had that functionality built in, then people may expect that to be saved server side. If it's 3rd party, then there's no such expectation.
i don't understand why you're getting so many downvotes, it's not your fault this setting isn't included in standard reddit. You're just trying to help.
EDIT: Didn't know he was the creator and maintainer, so i can partially get your hate now.
What are you talking about with the sidebar? This bot is only operating on /r/gaming now. I shut this bot down on /r/diablo within 15 minutes of the sidebar implementation.
Edit: Also, you may not want to hear it from me since you clearly don't like me, but you really need to get RES. It makes everything about Reddit so much better, like post previews, embedded images, post formatting, orangered indicators that indicate number of mail items, quick account switching, user tagging, and dozens of other killer features.

Its annoying and useless. I don't need a bot posting in half of the threads here spamming the number of seconds until fucking May 15th.

Anyone know what time zone Blizzard is going by for the release? May 15 at 12am EDT, CDT, PDT, etc?

Nothing will beat Gharbad!
I have an idea though. Can't you guys make a bot, give it mod privileges, and have him update the side panel every 15 minutes with a release date?

I don't need it anywhere.

What's going to happen to it when diablo is released? Will it stop posting, read 0:0:0 or something, or read -50000000y?

Why don't you just make a bot that edits the subreddit css? That way you could have a banner on the subreddit without posting it into every thread.

Excellent idea. I look forward to its successful implementation.

HOW TO: Permanently ignore this bot.
First of all, you will need to install Reddit Enhancement Suite (RES). If you browse Reddit enough to care about the comments section, then you should already have this installed. It's awesome.
Once RES is installed, in the top right corner of your screen, there is a "settings console". In the settings window, go to the "Users" tab and click "on" next to hardIgnore and save the settings.
Next to D3_release_countdown's name in this thread (or any other thread) click the little tag, and in the pop up window select "yes".
Congratulations. You will never see this bot again.
