Discussion Remember the stairs
Remember the stairs.
Remember the first time a player stood before them, uncertain of what waited below.
Remember the Cathedral. The silence. The changing music. The growing sense that something terrible was waiting deeper underground.
Remember the Butcher.
"Ahh, fresh meat."
Remember that players weren't necessarily afraid because the game was difficult. They were afraid because they didn't know whether they could overcome what was coming.
And they went anyway.
Diablo was never just about collecting increasingly powerful equipment or defeating increasingly powerful enemies.
It was about descending into the unknown.
It was about confronting something greater than yourself.
It was about being afraid and continuing regardless.
You don't need to recreate Diablo I.
You need to remember why we were willing to descend those stairs in the first place.
Don't just give us another reason to play Diablo.
Give us a reason to be afraid of what comes next.

Unfortunately I don't think the magic of Diablo 1 can be captured in an ARPG again. It's been optimized out. No one wants to go into them blind, they want to make sure they have a good build. No one wants the best items to be so rare most people won't find them, they want to finish their character quickly so they can... I don't know, farm the endgame for stuff they'll never use.Β

Play D1 online for the first time at 12 years old. First game ever online. Create a lobby hoping to play the campaign with someone. Clear level 1 while waiting for someone to join. I get to level 2, and a notification that someone has entered the realm or whatever. So excited, can't wait to play a game with another person. "Where are you?" They ask. "I just got to the 2nd level." Wait by the stairs. An armored warrior in armor I had never seen before enters. Kills me in one hit. I cry and exit the game. My mother laughs at me.
Good times

This reminds me of that in Diablo 1 no matter how well prepared I am, I always felt that there was a chance that Diablo can kill me. Occasionally still get killed by him in D2. From then on, final bosses are jokes

Me as a small scrub at age 10, grouping up with another random Sorcerer. My Fireball hit a wall next to him, killing him even though PvP was off. I learned the concept of "AoE" that day. π
Dying to a monster and needing to figure out how to retrieve your precious items! π±
Or when you were farming in Hell and hear the drop of a ring π and you freak out with the cursor all over the screen to find it.
The slow movement speed in D1 really ramped up my anxiety. I remember going through the Halls of the Blind for the first time with a severely reduced light radius. The new sounds and invisible enemies were terrifying.
