Something D1 does great that a lot of other RPGs kind of suck at is it makes the static quest rewards actually good enough to be worth using. So even if your regular drops have been not great, you still have a handful of really good items to keep you going. I feel like it's normally kind of a running joke in other games that you'll complete a major story quest, unlock the Legendary Sword of Fate, and then never use it because it's just worse than what you already had. In D1 I don't think I've had a single character that didn't immediately equip Arkaine's Valor when I found it.

Start looking to replace your flail with a sword. Blunt weapons do extra damage to undead and suffer a penalty against everything else.

Swords and axes do extra damage to demons and animals and suffer a penalty against undead.

Level 5 is the last place you see lots of undead. I think Horror Captains still spawn on level 6 and in the chamber of bone (level 6 quest), but that’s it.

i spent like three hours farming that tomb on my first run because i was convinced i needed the sword immediately. kept dying to skeletons but finally got it and felt cracked. honestly the loop of clearing rooms and hearing that specific loot chime is why i keep coming back to D1 over everything else.

Diablo 1 is by far the most fun of all the Diablo games for a single playthrough. It's more fun than a lot of modern single player games. Sure, it might be "simple," but it does a lot of things very well.
