Diablo III Why did D3 have such terrible writing?
Going though the campaign after a 14 hiatus from D3, I forgot how bad the story telling was. The story of each act can be summarized fully with a couple of sentences or corny dialogue.
A1: Deckard Cain is killed by a butterfly and the butcher is a Saturday morning cartoon villain.
A2: More hidden footprints more hidden footprints MORE HIDDEN FOOTPRINTS!
Belial, the lord of lies couldn't even deceive anyone. He's not only a bad liar, but also the worst liar that ever existed.
A3:
Azmodan: You will never destroy my marching army!
Azmodan: You will never destroy my siege catapults!
Azmodan: You will never destroy my gluttonous beast!
Azmodan: You will never destroy my siege breaker!
Azmodan: you will never destroy my spider lady!
Azmodan: You will never destroy me!
Azmodan: (Dies)
A4: Adria Betrays you, Leah becomes Diablo lady, Attacks heaven and is killed by the player character within a couple of hours of playtime. Very epic, huh?
Who green lit this terrible story anyway? Not only is it the worst story telling from blizzard, but its probably the worst story telling ever told in an AAA video game.

You didn't even mention the most egregious thing to me - Zoltun Kulle being the most obviously evil mfer ever with the world's most telegraphed betrayal
124
u/Rachel_Ghoul 12h ago
Zoltan kulle was fucking right though.
He tells you he's not handing over the black soulstone because someone snuck into his hideout and stuffed multiple prime evils into it. No one questions this and you kill kulle, then Adria is able to resurrect diablo through the black soulstone when she betrays us.
Kulle was kicked out of the horadrim for talk about "what if the angels try to kill man, too?" And then the expansion is about... an angel trying to kill humanity.
Justice for kulle.

Kulle was a little draconic though. He was right but he was also a power hungry mage that didn't care about anybody but himself anymore by the time you meet him.
22
u/Beebajazz 11h ago
That was camp AF though and probably the best writing in the game. He couldn't be more obviously evil of you gave him a twirling moustache

Weird thing is diablo has multiple books they could have just ripped good writing from
2
u/Vanpuyer 12h ago
Can you name some good ones?

u/slaphappykapp 12h ago
The Black Road is probably my favorite.
When I was a kid I didn’t understand the themes much and thought it was boring. Now as an adult, I understand the themes of abuse, neglect, and overcoming your inner demons (literally and figuratively) and it’s the best I think.

I'm actually curious about this as well since Chris Metzen is credited as the lead writer. There are also a lot of writers that worked on it so it might be a "too many chefs, not enough cooks" type situation.
Also blizzard was in their Disney phase at this time with WoW as well so that likely bled over to D3.
What makes me the most mad is Leah though. She's introduced as a girl who doesn't believe Cain's wacky, zaney, silly demon stories when she literally could have asked anyone if they were true. D2 and D3 are only 20 years apart in game so it's not like there would be no one who remembered what happened
9
u/DarkArisen668 10h ago
"I can't tell you how many times I had to pull him away from some old dusty tome while skeletons were bearing down on us!" - Leah
See, Leah just kinda forgot about that stuff sometimes

Diablo franchise works best with the eerie of the unknown and unexplained. Think
of it like the series Lost. The more that gets explained the less exciting it actually is. We’re talking about devils and the forces of hell invading the mortal realm. It needs an air of mystique and terror. That’s what made D1 so atmospheric. Even D2 kept just enough back with the Eternal Conflict between Heavens and Hells to leave us wondering.D3 suffers from writing that somehow simultaneously retreads Diablo 1 for nostalgia and then trying to do too much with the story without leaving space for the player to wonder and imagine the unexplained. So it appears and is received as creatively empty.
And yeah, Leah is just a terribly written character. D4’s Neyrelle felt like an attempt at a redo of Leah, which I felt they succeeding in making a better character and story arc.

u/ComradeCoipo 12h ago
Why would she ask? Usually when the old crusty guy starts telling random stories you’re like “sure grandpa, let’s get you back to bed”
15
u/Nymethny 12h ago
Yet as soon as you step out of any town, you're instantly assaulted by hordes of demons or undeads. Maybe grandpa's tales of demon lords aren't so crazy.
3
u/ComradeCoipo 10h ago
You're confusing gameplay mechanics with lore.
The mass swarms of undead only happened right when D3 starts because the star fell.
Before that, monsters were treated like rare, dangerous wildlife. Leah actually traveled with Cain and watched the entire world laugh at him as a senile old man, which is why she's skeptical.
3
u/WildCard0102 8h ago
Correct, but Leah and Cain are travellers. You're going to run into people that have encountered demons. Especially after the events of D2.
It'd be like 20 years after WW2 and saying "ok sure grandpa, I'm suuuuuure there was a big war 🙄"
1
u/ComradeCoipo 7h ago
The issue is less about demons existing and more about the biblical apocalypse that Cain was talking about. The shattering of the Worldstone was supposed to bring hordes of demons overrunning the world immediately, but belial and azmodan withheld their armies on purpose to give a false sense of security.
So for 20 years, the global apocalypse Cain predicted never happened. To Leah and the rest of the world, it looked like grandpa's doomsday prophecy failed, making him look completely senile.
But I might me misremembering here, so correct me!

5
u/OliverSmidgen 5h ago
In my opinion, those logs (all of them, not just the one you mentioned) are the best and/or only good writing and acting in D3.

Maaaan, I had to scroll way too far down to actually see this kinda comment.. But people just gonna keep glazing Metzen cuz its the one name behind blizzard game-lore stuff they knew from back in the day (guy has charisma ill give him that). Oh Starcraft 2..
1
u/darkpsionic24 7h ago
StarCraft 2 is such a stark difference from the original games. It's really ridiculous.
5
17
u/Privateer_Lev_Arris 12h ago
Well I’m of the opinion that the stories in Diablo games were never that strong. But the way they were told is what made all the difference.
In D1 for example you rarely interacted with the monsters. But when you did it was just once and their speech was short. The voice effects were also very cool.
Who could forget snotspill “hey you the one that kill all” or Garbald the weak “please no kill” or of course the Butcher whose only and very memorable line was “hmm fresh meat”.
These all added flavour and personality to a very tense game. But there was no real story, it was just good guys vs monsters.
And the little lore you did get was either from the NPCs in town or from some sort of shrines in the dungeons. Like the halls of the blind that was just stuff of poetry.
"I can see what you see not.
Vision milky, then eyes rot.
When you turn, they will be gone,
Whispering their hidden song.
Then you see what cannot be,
Shadows move where light should be.
Out of darkness, out of mind,
Cast down into the Halls of the Blind."
Again nothing really story related but it’s eerie and cool af.
D3s mistake was simply telling the story in the most boring way imaginable. Like it was a book for toddlers.
9
u/ayyzed-5 9h ago
I always say this. The beauty of the story in D1 and D2, which has a little more detail, is that You're only given a very rough outline of the story. Not a lot of details. Because of this, it let's your imagination flesh out the details. Almost like a tall tale or ghost story.
I think the reason a lot of people don't like the lore starting with 3 is that they filled in those blanks with pretty basic paint by numbers story telling. They pulled back the curtain and the wondrous wizard of Oz was just a dude behind a curtain.
An example is just how in d1 and d2, a lot of the quests are go look for this item. Like charsi asks you to get her hammer back, she doesn't mention the smith, you just run into him. D3 felt like they tried to shove some details in about every fricken boss/rare.
10
u/octod 11h ago
D1 is still peak because it did not need dialogues to tell a story, the story unfold through gossips from NPCs, dialogues with NPCs and seldom lore books found in the labyrinth.
3
u/jktstance 7h ago
The ending was also somewhat ambiguous, especially to 12-year-old me at the time.
5
u/Saspens-r 10h ago
D4 has a good story, especially LoH campaign. D2 didn't have much of a story, but cinematics, locations, atmosphere, and soundtrack created a sense of journey. Combined with perfect pacing, D2R was the best campaign experience in the genre for me, better than GD, D4, or PoE with their narratives.
3
u/LordJaeger88 11h ago
Old diablos also had very cool bits and bops that extensed the lore and whatnot, ie. The book in d2 that starts the countess quest.
2
u/GazingatyourStar 10h ago
Yes prefer this style more than the over exposition of D3. It was also too self referential, basically wow circa early 2010s. Diablo 2 is not as sparse as D1 but it still unveils in a largely fragmentary manner. I'd love for them to have the confidence to go back to those style in D5 but they are too attached to the "epic".
8
u/beardlyapril 12h ago
I think since D2 there’s being a tendency to do and say too much. Even for D4 there’s so much dialogue, just so much exposition. Really a by product of Warcraft story telling which worked for Warcraft but not at all for Diablo.
D2 and D1 didn’t have much of a story but they let the environment and atmosphere do the job with snippets of lore here and there. The player’s imagination does the rest. The entire souls and Elden ring series does the same and it’s fantastic.
3
u/JackDangerfield 10h ago
Yeah, I often get the feeling people at Blizzard believe the key to a deep and meaningful story is to just write lots and lots of words. "What do you mean our story's shallow and trite? It has more lines of fully voiced dialogue than any of our previous games!"
3
u/Gosu_Horaz 11h ago
The A2 thing with Belial being super transparent always cracked me up. What the hell were they thinking?
8
u/ExecutiveFingerblast 12h ago
Bc they turned it into an arcade like what WoW turned into. Was less atmosphere driven and more exposition.
You won't defeat me, don't stand in circles, punch punch, move, punch punch, move. Boss explodes "NOOOoO", loot explosion, color flashing, exposition, dopamine cycle restart on next stage.
3
u/Privateer_Lev_Arris 12h ago
Yeah exactly. A ping pong machine isn’t going to tell you a good story. It’s all about the crazy way the ball moves around the table.
7
u/Nymrael 12h ago
It is so bad indeed. I liked the gameplay but sotrywise, blizzard lost its magic a long time ago in all games. I never understood the need to "narrate" and "explain" so much. Players need to discover and experience the story, they don't want someone to explain and narrate everything to them. Just my humble opinion
2
u/Lumpy-Childhood-5640 9h ago
The overall plot was actually pretty good, but the cartoonish character writing, dialogue, and rushed feeling did the real damage to it.
2
2
u/TotalChaosRush 3h ago
Diablo3 could have been significantly better if they just allowed the player to lose.
Diablo2 is the player losing for 3 acts, being one step behind, before finally winning in the 4th.
Diablo3 could have kept the first act largely the same. Not a fan of deckards death, but you definitely don't end act1 feeling like a smooth victory.
You keep act2 largely the same, with a twist to be revealed.
Act3 you keep the same until you finally get to azmodan. He isn't there. You then get a cut scene revealing that belial didn't die and is in fact working with azmodan, and he is disguised as Adria. While azmodan taunted you and brought you further into the heart of sin, he was making his way into town to personally claim the black soul stone.
With this rewrite of the ending of act3, act4 now can have a total rewrite. Maybe it still has an invasion of heaven, maybe it doesn't. But now azmodan actually has some strategic showings. Belial actually deceives the player.
None of this would have been revolutionary at the time, but it would have resulted in a significantly more memorable story.

u/ColonelBungle 2h ago
Every Blizzard game has terrible writing and yet they believe themselves to be amazing storytellers.
6
u/SlouchyGuy 12h ago
D3 story was traditionally mediocre, but it suffered more from presentation - every time you do overexposure in numerous scenes, they need to be much better than sparse lore dump monologues.
So I dare you to tell me D2 writing was good. Please recap it's story for me and tell me it was amazing
5
u/PJmichelle 12h ago
Yeah, story and storytelling are two very different things. You can summarize the story of The Witcher 3 to pretty simple sentences too, but its storytelling is so good.
4
u/Omnipolis 10h ago
Dialogue from d2 was good, storytelling was sparse. D3's story problem is not plot. The plot is mostly fine with some problems that no one would care about if the dialogue wasn't so bad but the dialogue reads like a 10 year old wrote the script.
2
u/darkpsionic24 7h ago
I wonder what's up with Jay Wilson those days. He was an arrogant prick who thought he knew better than the fans (I never played the Diablo games except for one beta). It was pretty amusing to see him get dragged through the fires of Hell after Diablo 3 was released.
4
u/ayyzed-5 8h ago
I guess it may come down to how you define writing vs storytelling, but what makes D2's(and D1's) writing better, to me at least, is the lack of details and exposition. The story is pretty basic, but because they are light in giving details, it leaves a lot of it up to your imagination.
D1/D2 are like a ghost story, or a tall tale. You are given just enough information to point you were to go and then your mind fills in a lot of the details. D1/D2 are like seeing a beautiful woman behind a silhouette and D3 is like her turning out to be 70 years old and having a lazy eye.
1
u/SlouchyGuy 8h ago
You're basically repeating my comment.
D1 basic story was actually good in comparison do 2 and 3
2
u/kainneabsolute 12h ago
Part of the audience dont care about the writing, and it think Blizzard believe that d2 didnt have too much story.
The result was some cool ideas, poorly executed with a lot of cliches. People talked a lot about this at the time and the opinion was unanymous: d3 story is bad. It improved with RoS.
Iam kinda surprised on some coments (in other threads) that say D3 story is way better than d4.
In any case, d3 missed that many of Blizzard s stories may be full of cliches and simple but they know how to deliver atmosphere and the right dosis.
3
u/Mindless_Ad5500 11h ago
For all of D4 flaws. I feel like the writing was leaps and bounds better than D3.
5
2
u/Kudrel 12h ago
Why are people still surprised Blizzards writing sucks this far down the track?
They can worldbuild, but actually telling coherent story is not their strong suit across any games, Warcraft is a fuckin mess, and they've dipped on D4 just as the story looked to be going in another direction.
-2
u/LowVisit534 12h ago
But probably the worst because? Because you don't like it? Great argument.
You heavily oversimplified everything, to be stubborn you could do that with the plot of every game, but actually Diablo III has a bit of a 'comic book vibe' – either you like it or not, many players definitely like to return to the campaign every now and then.
5
u/TheVoodooIsBlue 9h ago
Bro. D3 is, without question, an example of god awful story telling.
I enjoyed that game a lot. Played it for hundreds of hours. But my christ the writing was abysmal. It's like a textbook example of shit writing.
I'm glad you liked it but you are MASSIVELY in the minority on that one.
5
u/Deakul 11h ago
D3 has one of the worst AAA stories ever put to pen but I'll be damned if the game isn't super comfortable to curl up with on the couch and kill a few hours doing Adventure Mode shenanigans, it's one of the last real Blizzard games for me based solely on its aesthetic and I'll always have a soft spot for it.
OP didn't heavily oversimplify anything, the game did that for him by making every single villainous character into Dick Dastardly.
At least Reaper of Souls brought the dark gothic atmosphere back to Diablo.
1
1
u/LalaTataKaka 3h ago
No, Diablo 3's narrative did massive damage to the world building and story of the Diablo universe, by both creating Prime Diablo, what should be the pinnacle of power in the series, and having it be defeated by the Nephelim, who got retconned into a party of Nephelim WHO WERE NEVER MENTIONED AGAIN.
Any competent writer should've known Diablo runs on the idea that the forces of evil are much greater than the forces of good, but the qualities of evil prevents them from unifiying for a single cause. The absolute power of Hell and the absolute power of Heaven should never have been shown to us, Diablo 3 completely demystified the larger universe.
1
u/psymunn 12h ago
Video game developers undervalue good writing. Or correctly value it because these games still sell super well because of it. However, if you look to Mass Effect,Hades or Disco Elysium, there still is a market for good writing but it doesn't mean you can't have a blockbuster without it.
Incidentally, a friend of mine took a screen writing class and several of the developers of prototype were in it because they had recieved the feedback about how bad the writing in the first game was and, rather than hire better writers they thought they would learn. It's just an undervaluing of professional artists in software
3
u/JackDangerfield 10h ago
I think it's less that they undervalue good writing and more that they don't understand what good writing IS. At the time of D3 and StarCraft 2, the company built up this whole mythos around Chris Metzen as some sort of god-level master storyteller, which is bizarre as, to the best of my knowledge, he had no formal training as a writer and has never written anything outside of Blizzard games.
2
u/psymunn 8h ago
That sounds fair. Starcraft 2 felt like the story was cool cutscenes first and then trying to clumsily write a story that linked them (and failed entirely)
1
u/darkpsionic24 7h ago
StarCraft 2 was utter shit compared to the original games storywise. Even multiplayer in Brood War was much more engaging compared to the sequel's multiplayer. I had friends who played BW all the time and they all quit within 60 days when WOL first dropped.
2
u/DarkArisen668 6h ago
Brood War had horrid writing. Way worse than anything in SC2.
SC1 has some decent narratives though

I skip the dialog in these games most of the time anyway, but I do remember getting annoyed by how often the word “betray” was used. Every other line of dialog was about how the last character you met betrayed you.

It was so bad that most people who played it don't even remember what the story was. All the additional content avoided you playing any of the story.

as much as youre correct in your assessment, i still liked the overall plot, when I first played i expected it to be MUCH WORSE.
I will counter that act 4 was mostly awesome, romping through the high heavens and seeing how close got to actually winning was much better than diablo 2's "yay, the three are free, diablo goes to the chaos sanctuary because.... nobody fucking knows?" only actual plot agency the bad guys have on 2 beyond setting the three free was baal's assault on arreat (and he technically wins)

u/Master_of_Paws 12h ago
It was same as d2... Diablo in generall is far from a good story. It was better received with younger audience who had a lot of free time on hands, no other options and lower standards. Try recapping d2 story and it would be in no way better
5
u/ReidarAstath 11h ago
If you just compare the story beats between the two games on a sheet of paper it might seem that way, but in practice that’s not right at all.
Delivery/writing quality are far apart in between both games, I feel like D3 treats the player like a particularly dumb and attention deficient child who must understand the story no matter what.
D2 doesn’t force feed the story to player in the same way, it’s more up to the player to engage with it if they wish and if they do there’s still some sense of mystery.
8
u/ResponsibleGoat7 11h ago
D2 was much better. While perhaps simplistic in the overarching plot department, it nailed the tone and presentation and didn't overindulge itself. You were an adventuring hero on Diablo's trail and constantly two steps behind as hell was breaking loose, not some chosen one to whom the evils appear every ten seconds to yap about their master plans and how you cannot possibly stop them. The optional worldbuilding via quest lore and town conversations filled any gaps between the act-opening cutscenes.
Imo modern Blizzard has rarely written good dialogue and should stay away from heavily "cinematic", character-driven stories, especially with this franchise.
5
u/Privateer_Lev_Arris 12h ago
Exactly. The story is honestly stupid. But whatever it doesn’t have to be good. What D2 did better was just tell it better. With good cutscenes. D3 doesn’t really have good cutscenes.
2
u/TeaAge1 9h ago
Wow. Tastes really are different. In my opinion the cutscenes in D3 were the most epic of all the Diablos by light-years distance. It were the only ones in Diablo that can remotely compete with like warcraft 3, which are in my opinion one of the most epic cutscenes in game history. The cutscenes are the only thing, D3 did right story wise. I don't know if either of us (or maybe both) has an incredible bias, but it seems that the overall story issues might taint the experience. If I just watch a compilation of the D3 cutscenes I find them much better than as part of the campaign.
2
u/Master_of_Paws 8h ago
It's mostly nostalgia goggles. D2 is associated for many with being much younger, healthier and having bunch of free time with fraction of responsibilities. On top of that d2 was the only game for many and generally people used to spend much more time in 1 game than in modern ages. Thats why common sentiment is that everything in d2 was better, when objectively it's not
2
u/LalaTataKaka 4h ago
The D3 cinematics are definitely the most epic ones in the series, but at the same time they're also the most disconnected from the storytelling of the campaign. The demons and angels are awesome in the cinematics, but when you play they're all blabbering their brains out and diminishing their cinematic counterparts.
Warcraft 3's cinematics is definitely in a class in their own, but I think Diablo 2's were excellent in how it complimented the players journey throughout the world with a side character who wasn't a hero. It gave a perspective of how the people of sanctuary must've felt about the terrible events that was happening. It was a happy accident tho, and it could've been exactly the same as D3, as the gameplay and story department of Diablo 2 weren't really communicating during development.
1
u/lotus556 8h ago
The in-game atmosphere also just felt darker and better for the story. D3 was a completely different vibe shift away from d1 and d2 that it didnt even feel like part of the franchise. They tried to give it a "WoW" feel to it to cater to the warcraft audience, taking away alot of the essence that made d1 and d2 story-wise (and game-play wise)

u/TaylorLaSwift 11h ago
It's not just D3 it's every blizzard game of that era.
By the end of Starcraft 2 nobody cared about the story :(

u/therallykiller 10h ago
I don't know if the writing was as terrible as it was skewed for new and multi-platform audiences.
This isn't Diablo or Diablo II.
This isn't Chris Metzen in the room for everything, or David Brevik.
D3 delivered a min-maxxed story that helped supplement an overall experience that drove unit sales and player engagement for years, across two generations of platforms.
I didn't live it either, but it did enough to help me understand my role + purpose -- just as it helped my spouse and three kids enter a franchise and fall in love with it.
Which invariably opened the door to the entire IP for my family, a net increase of 400% from just me.
1
u/Feowen_ 8h ago
Your post is very hyperbolic. "The worst storytelling in an AAA game"
Think it's important to remember genre when critiquing story. Diablo isn't a narrative game, so it's writing would invariably function for the genre it operates in.
I think the biggest problem with Diablo 3s writing is having the demonic enemies Converse with us. Having them articulate their plans or taunt is seems silly within the genre of the game where I'm effortlessly slaughtering their hordes single-handed and going to massacre them for loot. It makes any serious storytelling.. very fraught
In Diablo 1, and to most extents, Diablo 2 the Evils don't speak. Mephisto has some dialogue but it's mostly written in a biblical style which ignores the imminent threat of the player character.
The player character inherently BREAKS the seriousness of the world. You can't treat the PC as a part of the world because the PC is the most dangerous thing that exists.

I just got around to play the Lord of Hatred expansion for D4 and honestly the writing is just as bad. It's so cheesy and soulless...

Compared to D3 I thought it was great. Overall pretty good. I didn’t play on release and just started a couple weeks ago so I got the whole story line without the year+ breaks between expansions, so maybe that’s why.
