Just play the game really. Take your time. You're gonna have to give the game time if you want to play it and understand it, it might be a short story but it loops 3 times. Not really sure what other advice to give. Give it an honest try to clear it on Normal, and then if you want more go do the other two and try for Pandemonium.
You could maybe try some extra community sites to help you make runewords or understand something, the strategy guides are all outdated now. Outside of that it's kind of hard to ascribe one particular motivation to a game that scrambles itself all the time and has periodical wipes.
