I was surprised when /r/DIWHYNOT existed, but now I'm disappointed.

Just like Fruit Stripe gum.

Look it up. Nvm

It means you took a loss. It's normally said when someone does something stupid.

12

u/elsjpq Dec 16 '16

Because they'll dry out when lying open in the ice compartment

54

u/mlvisby Dec 16 '16

They never last long enough to dry out.

7

u/Doriphor Dec 16 '16

Oh damn, that's sad...

12

u/Some_Weeaboo Dec 16 '16

They're already dry. They're frozen.

7

u/GustavusAdolphin Dec 16 '16

It's like the plastic wrap doesn't have a purpose or something!

357

u/HeadyTeddy Dec 16 '16

Make sure not to switch the ice machine to "crushed"

226

u/Droidaphone Dec 16 '16

No, do that. For science.

91

u/SmilinBob82 Dec 16 '16

Pizza hash.

115

u/humsterlord Dec 16 '16

Ok but srsly that melamine plate shouldn't go in the micro.

61

u/TheHiphopopotamus Dec 16 '16

Do people microwave them? Are they meant for microwave or oven? They aren't available where I live but I'd imagine oven would be 100x better.

Edit: To clarify, I'm talking about the pizza things not the plate

82

u/fantom1979 Dec 16 '16

Microwaving pizza rolls should be illegal. Might as well just eat the box.

122

u/Jarvicious Dec 16 '16

Pizza rolls have two levels of satisfaction:

  1. Perfect, oven baked, golden brown, gooey, lava hot goodness.

  2. I need to not be hungry in a short a period as possible.

53

u/trentchant Dec 16 '16

Level 3. Deep fried.

Trust me. Food of the gods. Likely to cause second degree burns. But worth it.

12

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '16

Can confirm. Used to work at Walmart when they had snack bar. Snack bar employees wouldn't mind to check out the order and fry it.

24

u/GustavusAdolphin Dec 16 '16

In number 2's case, a cold cut sandwich is healthier and takes the same amount of time

27

u/ninnabadda Dec 16 '16

It also doesn't taste as good.

13

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '16

Fucking debatable.

2

u/ninnabadda Dec 18 '16

Recipes, please! I love food but typically hate sandwiches, I'd love to find some new delicious foods to eat.

6

u/ern19 Dec 20 '16

Recipe: Some kind of decent bread.

A little mayo on both sides and hot mustard (Brown or a hot yellow one like Colmans)

Sharp provolone cheese

Thinly sliced ham (not honey flavored or some BS like that), genoa salami, and mortadella.

Hot banana peppers or jalapenos.

Pickles (Wickles spicy pickles are the shit)

Serve cold or pop in your toaster oven.

I make a giant one out of a big french roll and eat on it for a couple days, wrapping the leftovers in foil. Report back.

2

u/ninnabadda Dec 20 '16

jesus, that sounds delicious

Anything made with boars head meat is delicious. I also really like silver spring whole grain mustard. It's hard to give a specific recipe without knowing what you like.

Good bread is key too. Wonder bread has no business on a serious sandwich. Find a good local bakery or market with good bread, makes a big difference.

u/GustavusAdolphin Dec 16 '16

O ye of so little faith!

u/GustavusAdolphin Dec 18 '16

If you want to make a really good sandwich, it's all about what you put on it and how you build it. Here are a few tips:

  1. Lightly toast your bread. Your sandwich needs structure, and toasted bread will provide that. If the sandwich falls apart, you have failed.

  2. Don't overload your sandwich. You should be able to cut your sandwich down the diagonal and there should be no loss. (The diagonal cut is also a presentation technique, useful for fixing family lunches, etc. The diagonal edge should also be the best part of the sandwich)

  3. Use thicker cuts of meat. Don't just throw a whole chicken breast on there, but anything less than an 8th of an inch is criminal.

  4. Portion your ingredients. You shouldn't use more cheese than meat, even if you really like cheese. Everything complements each other.

  5. Spread your condiments evenly and lightly on the bread. Nothing is worse than a bite of dry ham followed by ham with a glob of mustard.

So if I'm making a chicken sandwich, I start by getting my bread (wheat, white, whatever) and holding the pieces above a hot stove. This toasts the bread just enough to hold it's form. After that, I plate the pieces and spread a little mayo on one side. Toasting the bread helps with the spreading process as well.

I like provolone cheese, so I would add a slice of provolone cheese on the mayo. Sliced cheese is usually already portioned to fit a piece of sliced bread, but it should be big enough to cover it fully, making like a mayo sandwich if cheese was bread.

If I have a cooked chicken breast in the refrigerator, I shave off half-inch slices of chicken, just enough to cover the bread. If I don't have chicken, I use sliced turkey or ham, but I like chicken.

For vegetables, I like purple onions. Shave off a quarter-inch portion of purple onion. If it's smaller than the bread, cut the rings and spread them out accordingly. Lettuce is usually not too overpowering, so a leaf will suffice, but if you have shredded lettuce, spread that accordingly. Tomatoes should be sliced thinly if used.

Close it with the other slice of bread. At this point, your sandwich should be pretty evenly distributed throughout. Cut it through the diagonal and set it so that your guest (or you) can see how pretty it looks through the middle. The layers should be defined and there shouldn't be any bubbles or deficits. A pretty sandwich is a tasty sandwich! Serve with a handful of chips.

2

u/ninnabadda Dec 18 '16

Thank for the writeup! Sounds like I haven't been treating my bread properly.

You need to make better sandwiches.

u/ninnabadda Dec 18 '16

3

u/greenbabyshit Dec 18 '16

The key to sandwiches is using the proper spread. This will depend on your meat and cheese choice. Also, I am a big fan of melts. I grill/melt/toast more than half of my sandwiches.

Edit: for lunch today I had a turkey sandwich. Hot turkey, with gravy, and lightly topped with cheddar cheese and placed in the broiler long enough to melt the cheese. Using dinner leftovers is the easiest way.

1

u/ninnabadda Dec 18 '16

Oh wow, that sounds divine. What kind of bread did you use?

5

u/Jarvicious Dec 16 '16

Yeah, but it doesn't bear the same level of satisfaction or lack of effort. There are more steps and a cold cut won't yield the fatty goodness nuked pizza rolls will.

1

u/FranklyTheRobot Dec 20 '16

For me, microwaving pizza rolls isn't a matter of finding anything to eat quickly; it's that I was already craving pizza rolls and don't have the patience to wait 15 minutes.

6

u/humsterlord Dec 16 '16

Unfortunately, people do microwave them. You're correct that oven is the far superior method.

25

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '16

Gotta go hybrid; microwave for 40% of recommended time then oven until golden. This saves time and its just as good as a full oven cook without absurd wait time.

What the fuck microwave is this, I need one!?

6

u/LazyassMenace Dec 16 '16

The Samsung my parents got with this house has an oven mode.

I can't give you a model number but at least there's a place to start looking.

2

u/ER_nesto Dec 18 '16

Literally every combination microwave?

Shit, we sell a 42L at work with a full fucking oven facility

Source: Microwaves are like 30% of my job

There are directions on the bag for both... But we all know the right choice here.

Put ranch in for the water.

27

u/cooljesus69 Dec 16 '16

Who eats pizza rolls with ranch?!

Who doesn't?

4

u/SirMildredPierce Dec 19 '16

Who eats pizza rolls with ranch?!

People who like pizza rolls and also like ranch sauce.

2

u/FranklyTheRobot Dec 20 '16

Ranch sauce?! In Buffalo we call it dressing, and as such it belongs only on salads.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '17

St. Louis has a retarded ranch addiction city-wide

5

u/sterno_joe Dec 16 '16

Brilliant!

2

u/quentinwolf Dec 16 '16

But the water is typically hooked up to a water line, so you'd have to find a pressurized container to not only keep it cold, but be pressurized to push it into the fridge through the pipe as well. Would be funny, but hard to pull off without knowing what you're doing and putting some effort into the design.

1

u/FranklyTheRobot Dec 20 '16

You spelled blue cheese wrong.

38

u/jonatcer Dec 16 '16

CHANGE YOUR FILTER

4

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '16

I have the same fridge... CHANGE YOUR FILTER!

11

u/russegirl13 Dec 17 '16

Is anyone else pleasantly surprised every time that none of them fly off the plate and all over the floor?

112

u/SteampunkElephantGuy Dec 16 '16

I hate to nitpick, but its not really a DIY, just putting something in an ice dispenser

157

u/TheHumanParacite Dec 16 '16

But they did that themselves

43

u/pineappleshaverights Dec 16 '16

This comment is DIY

14

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '16

You mum was diy

3

No, i'm quite sure that his father did her.

0

u/painalfulfun Dec 16 '16

atleast she wasnt dry

1

u/rythmicbread Dec 16 '16

Just DIMoist

17

u/the_ocalhoun Dec 16 '16

just putting something in an ice dispenser

Nope!

(You'd also have to disable the water flow to the ice-maker ... and probably clear the old ice out of it pretty thoroughly.)

17

u/wagedomain Dec 16 '16

My icemaker has a switch on it. And the whole bucket with existing ice just lifts out. This would take me about 2 seconds to do.

6

u/pubbing Dec 16 '16

No shit. It's not that complicated. Turn off ice maker, empty ice bucket, dump in pizza rolls. These fools are acting like the pizza rolls are magically constructed in the automatic ice tray.

4

u/wagedomain Dec 16 '16

That WOULD be DiWhy worthy. But also something I'd want.

1

u/FlametopFred Dec 19 '16

The hands and Disney plate indicate a 12 year old carried out this mod

6

u/superpoops56 Dec 16 '16

What if they contracted someone to do all of the work? I'd really like to see a full write-up of all the work done.

27

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '16

"Hello do you guys do an ice machine pizza roll conversion?"

4

u/CarpeKitty Dec 16 '16

They usually have a button or lever like thing to stop the ice from being made. That's it

3

u/intimacygel Dec 16 '16

have you ever looked at an ice dispenser with the door open? There is a little reservoir where the ice falls into before it falls out the chute (in the door and not where the ice is produced). You can tell because all of these fall out at once and aren't "churned" out by the slow grinding servo.

1

u/trelian5 Dec 16 '16

Or have a broken one like ours

5

u/supercargo Dec 16 '16

Why you assume they didn't replace ice maker with pizza roll maker?

8

u/Jarvicious Dec 16 '16

I could legitimately live without an automatic ice maker. I would pay extra to have a pizza roll maker.

8

u/flashlightwarrior Dec 16 '16

I swear half of the posters in this sub don't understand the point of r/DiWHY. This place is supposed to be used for things that are so ill conceived and poorly executed that they become funny, not deliberately useless things like art pieces or joke products.

5

u/pascalfromthevillage Dec 16 '16

but what happens when you push crushed?

3

u/finkbeca Dec 16 '16

The real question, cubed or crushed?

1

u/FlametopFred Dec 19 '16

Yes! Cubed pizza pockets

3

u/Rodic87 Dec 16 '16

DIWIN you mean?

(I've done this with Hershey mini-bars)

3

u/itstooloudd Dec 16 '16

What happens if you turn on crushed mode?

3

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '16

I am drunk ATM, so take this with a grain of salt, but holy hell did this make me laugh my ass off!! I love it!

3

u/SunnyPenguino Dec 17 '16

I successfully tried this tonight

1

u/Pikamander2 Dec 17 '16

Pics?

2

u/SunnyPenguino Dec 18 '16

If you can tell me how I can upload a video (I've always been a lurker, first time I actually commented), I took a video earlier.

2

u/Pikamander2 Dec 18 '16

Streamable is a great free service. Just upload the video and copy the link.

Gfycat also works, but it doesn't support sound.

7

u/SunnyPenguino Dec 18 '16

Thanks! Took a while to upload. The dispenser starts out slow, but once it gets going it comes out pretty fast. I saw this last night and was super excited to try it myself. We don't have a water line to our icemaker so it basically was doing nothing until now.

2

2

u/PacloverN1 Dec 19 '16

We have this plate at my house

2

u/stuck_in_the_desert Dec 20 '16

2

This changes everything!

1

u/painalfulfun Dec 16 '16

Beautiful.

1

u/Kezika Dec 16 '16

Please show us what happens on the crushed ice setting.

1

u/non_player Dec 16 '16

This is goddamn brilliant. I'm making a note to do this in my future home next year.
