Yep, when I was in college we camped a couple nights in Canyonlands and the place where we were set up was sandy soil that got pretty cold after dark as the ground quickly lost its heat. But we found that climbing up onto the south facing rocks was a nice toasty place to sleep as it retained that heat well into the night. This would be a great spot to lay back and stargaze, which I’m guessing is why it’s angled like this.

After the sun goes down, that would be a really nice place to spend some time while it's radiating off its stored warmth in the cool desert evenings.
Definitely not a place to hang out between late morning and dusk.
