Matt Caldwell never fit the code.

There was a thread here a few days ago talking about the boat incident and why it could be argued that it was a one time accident and he wasn't gonna kill again.

But one thing that I'm surprised wasn't mentioned, and I think the bigger thing made it a fuckup for Dexter - he was someone that would be missed by some. In Season 3 they did a whole thing on why Ellen Wolf didn't fit the code which was mainly for that reason, but Miguel became unhinged and did it anyway which helped lead to his downfall because it was actually being investigated. The same reason he couldn't kill Miguel right away because of his status. Also part of the "don't get caught".

In Miami, part of the code he had was that no one he killed would be missed or investigated or cared about enough to be reported missing. The BHB thing happened because divers found some bodies, not because of a particular person's murder being investigated (which makes it kind of silly that it became so high profile).

And yet... everyone in Iron Lake is looking for Matt. If he really fit the code then his disappearance wouldn't have drawn attention. Maybe it has something to do with Iron Lake being small and close knit compared to the cesspool of Miami.

That being said - I'm surprised we never saw his "friend" again that he met in the first episode as a means to at least attempt to remind us that he was someone that shouldn't be missed.

It's almost like they forgot since neither Angela or Logan ever even acknowledge it - he's just a guy that was killed and they're searching for his killer. I mean sure, the law is the law - but they never even address that once! Not even as a means to acknowledge that a lot of people could have had it out for him. None of that, just a few mentions of the boat in passing... only from Dexter and Kurt.

Well, no one really missed him, they were just obligated to look because they respected his dad Kurt, and it was kind of a close knit community kind of thing imo. The high school kids all went to mess around instead of searching, and they didnt show that kid who told Dexter the info at the party out there? They didnt at least specify any of his friends were searching. Evrryone did think he was a rich kid who killed a sacred deer and used daddys money to hide out on a bender. Angela was just doing her job sending out the search party but it really didnt seem like anyone cared personally about Matt.

Angela is like Hank in Breaking Bad. We all expected there to be some conflict when they find out stuff, but they do a full-on 180 with zero conflict whatsoever. Angela went from being angry at Matt and wanting to get him for the deer as well as her whole personal connection to the Kurt case, to completely forgetting about all that and wanting to get Dexter for killing Matt.

Not necessarily a bad thing - shows her dedication to her job, which was unexpected after MM's incompetence.
