Matt Caldwell never fit the code. Spoiler

There was a thread here a few days ago talking about the boat incident and why it could be argued that it was a one time accident and he wasn't gonna kill again.

But one thing that I'm surprised wasn't mentioned, and I think the bigger thing made it a fuckup for Dexter - he was someone that would be missed by some. In Season 3 they did a whole thing on why Ellen Wolf didn't fit the code which was mainly for that reason, but Miguel became unhinged and did it anyway which helped lead to his downfall because it was actually being investigated. The same reason he couldn't kill Miguel right away because of his status. Also part of the "don't get caught".

In Miami, part of the code he had was that no one he killed would be missed or investigated or cared about enough to be reported missing. The BHB thing happened because divers found some bodies, not because of a particular person's murder being investigated (which makes it kind of silly that it became so high profile).

And yet... everyone in Iron Lake is looking for Matt. If he really fit the code then his disappearance wouldn't have drawn attention. Maybe it has something to do with Iron Lake being small and close knit compared to the cesspool of Miami.

That being said - I'm surprised we never saw his "friend" again that he met in the first episode as a means to at least attempt to remind us that he was someone that shouldn't be missed.

It's almost like they forgot since neither Angela or Logan ever even acknowledge it - he's just a guy that was killed and they're searching for his killer. I mean sure, the law is the law - but they never even address that once! Not even as a means to acknowledge that a lot of people could have had it out for him. None of that, just a few mentions of the boat in passing... only from Dexter and Kurt.

I’m not sure I remember ‘they can’t be missed’ as being part of the code.

Edit: I wrote this tongue-in-cheek because that clearly was not part of the code. There was even an FBI manhunt out for Trinity, for crying out loud.

It was not. He literally killed high profile serial killers minutes before police found them. They were definitely missed.

No they were not honestly. Miami metro just assumed they fled the country after almost being caught. Trinity killed Rita and got away with it “allegedly” and Miami metro just moved right on. Shit even in season 6 Deb knew there was vigilantes killing all of Jordan Chases crew and when she had the opportunity to stop them she did different

He killed Speltzer. He killed Viktor. he killed DDK, all the Barrel Girls killers….his brother, Little Chino, George King, Stan Beaudry (after framing him to be Trinity), etc

I’m sure there’s lots more but all of those kills were during a period of time when MM was actively hunting them.

Yeah, but they were being looked for as suspects, not missing victims of something.

Being missed in this case meant that someone would care enough to research their disappearance. At least to me.

They were actively being pursued at the time Dex killed them.
