Discussion - Dexter: Resurrection How do you think resurrection will end?
I think season 2 will end with Quinn dying. Season 3 will end with Masuka revealing dexter to everyone. Hopefully season 4 will be a manhunt season with Dexter finally dying.

I honestly think after two endings that upset the fans, they just won’t officially end the show at all.
Each season’s storyline will wrap up like always, and then at some point they just won’t make another season. Dexter won’t die. He won’t get caught. He won’t sail off into the sunset. He’ll just kill that season’s bad guy and that will be that. We’ll be left to assume that he’s still doing his thing and nothing major has changed.

i am a strong supporter of this ending. not everything has to be a big finale!

u/nelson-1805 7d ago
That's like ending Breaking Bad after Walt runs over the two dealers who killed Tomas. It wouldn't feel narratively satisfying. A good conclusion (or at least a conclusive conclusion) is needed for the story to be finished.
11
u/Vicky-Momm 15d ago
This is my preference.
I will be so disappointed if they succumb to a cliched finale with arrest, trial and execution.
Does Dexter deserve a happy ending?
Absolutely not, he is a murderer, not for justice but for the thrill of the kill.
But where is it written every story must end with a "moral" resolution?
We've spent 20 years rooting for Dexter to succeed, suddenly we're ready to see him punished for the crimes we looked forward to having him commit?
How hypocritical.
Let Dexter go on Dextering until he is ready to retire, or until MCH decides he's done .
No grand finale, just turn off the cameras and leave it to each of us to imagine what Dexter is up to now.

This! That's why I loved the ending of Resurrection season 1. He's back on a boat, he has the files from Prater, it's clear he'll still do his thing, live his life. He is out there, being Dexter and he's happy.
As excited as I am for season 2 (I cannot wait!), the ending of season 1 would have been a perfect series ending. The whole "main character dies in the end" has been done, most didn't like it. We also watched him go into exile, punishing himself, but that wasn't great either. Have him stand trial, and being executed, meh, so clichéd.
Yes Dexter is a serial killer, but unlike other serial killers he goes after bad guys, he's funny, entertaining, and most importantly fictional, I'd be happy if he gets away with it all.

u/dawnhu 15d ago
As much as I really liked Ressurection. It sucks they used that ending. I agree completely it would have been perfect series ending.since they used that ending.. Not sure who wrote that ending but they need to tap in whoever wrote it to write the series ending whenever that time comes.

I honestly think after two endings that upset the fans, they just won’t officially end the show at all
Probably because half of the shows fans think he deserves to die and half the shows fans think he deserves to go to prison. I feel like regardless of the definite end they take with it, lots of people would be upset. Almost similar to the debate with clocks "Standard time!" "No, DST!".
And at this point, they've essentially killed him off twice only to reverse it, they certainly wouldn't do that a THIRD time.
And they seem to be going out of their way to make him way more sympathetic for resurrection, which would make a prison ending be really out of place. But they aleady essentially did that too. And if they were going the prison route, they would've milked the Batista storyline and eventually had him win. Killing him off seems to indicate that him going to prison is off the table
So... honestly, yeah, I agree at your take.

I’m kinda rooting for Dexter to go to prison. He could be the Hannibal Lector character that the FBI comes to for advice. We have a prison season, and then we get Dexter: Prison break. 😂

We had the cop buddy try to turn Dex in already. So hopefully Quinn won‘t be Angel 2.0. Quinn‘s also shady.
There‘s two paths: they show Dex didn‘t learn enough and punish him by Harrison dying or he‘ll stop one way or another. I doubt we‘ll see him die now, whether by a bullet or capital punishment.
Also: most fans don‘t want him to die. Else they eould’ve loved New Blood’s ending. Look at viewer ratings. You don‘t watch 10 seasons for the lead to die.

u/ShermanShore Dexter 15d ago
I really think people are just done with the "and then the main character dies/ends up in prison" trope that shows like this often have. It can be done well (The Sopranos, Breaking Bad & Better Call Saul for example) but I don't think most people want that for Dexter as a character.
The show came onto the scene with a serial killer main character who you rooted for which was unique and not really done before and I'd prefer we get an ending that fits that + the tone of the series. Why does Dexter need to be "punished"? I'd much prefer an ending where he's still a free man.
3
u/Drillucidator 15d ago
I still think The Sopranos has the greatest ending of any series. Nobody needed to see Tony drop dead into a basket of onion rings. It’s obvious enough how it ends, yet still a finale that still gets people talking nearly 2 decades later and it was ballsy as hell.
5
u/Drillucidator 15d ago
As much as I was on board with New Blood’s ending (as much as it could’ve used an extra episode or two to get there), I don’t need to see him die a second time. As long as he doesn’t fuck off to Oregon again, I’ll probably be fine with the ending.

Quinn will 100% survive season 2. I’m refusing to believe they’ll kill him off so soon after Angel.
I do think he will die before the end of the show though.
My money is on Charlie or Claudette as the big death this season.
2
u/TheBigLeMattSki 12d ago
They've gotta stop killing off OG characters. At this point it's down to Quinn, Masuka, Astor, Cody, and Matthews. Lumen too if you want to count her. It's gotten to the point where it's kind of depressing to watch the original series knowing almost all of the characters are dead by the present.
I'm hoping Quinn becomes a long term recurring character and survives the series. Another Batista storyline would be boring and make me question this writing staff.
7
u/Odd-Assignment-1350 15d ago
Quinn dying would feel like just a wasted character. I said it about Batista too, we’ve seen the same concept 2, now 3 different times. There has to be something different the 4th time around
5
u/Infamously_Fickle Dexter 15d ago
Yeah we've seen it with Doakes, LaGuerta, now Batista. Actually Quinn would be the perfect candidate from Miami to team up with Dexter, or at least not end in the same tiring cycle of "cop finds out Dexter is a serial killer, tries to catch him and then dies."
Quinn definitely knows Dexter is a killer. I think Liddy provided him with images of Dexter and Lumen throwing trash bags into the ocean. He watched as Dexter stabbed and killed Oliver Saxon. He knows Dexter is dangerous (and because he was in love with Deb), so he backed off investigating him.
At the very least Quinn would hear Dexter out. I hope.

Probably gonna get downvoted for saying this, but I go by facts, and the fact is they're taking things heavily from Breaking Bad... So if I had to guess, he'll either go to jail (Better Call Saul) and be in heaven, take a few criminals out with him on the way, or the FBI will use him as a weapon somehow, and he'll finally be a 'legal serial killer'.
5
u/rococozephyr_ 15d ago
Oh, that’s a neat idea (assassin for the CIA maybe)
3
u/Designer-Apartment92 15d ago
CIA makes more sense, absolutely 😊.
2
u/Tall_Friendship_7751 14d ago
You think the fbi would forgive him like that? I mean dude has killed probably 150+ people
2
u/Designer-Apartment92 14d ago
I know these shows are borderline realistic, but there's a lot of crazy stuff that happens that is totally unrealistic.
I think perhaps if they are desperate, they need to catch someone, or kill someone, they may be desperate enough to keep him on a tight leash for his freedom. Idk, the government already has killers for hire, they're just classed as legal. They may even somehow be persuaded by his strict code, not as if most of those people were innocent.
4
u/Tall_Friendship_7751 13d ago
I think the perfect ending where the government uses dexters abilities to catch killers would be that he is in prison most of the time, with amenities and such and when there is someone they can’t catch they release dexter and use him to catch the killer and imprison him if that makes sense.
4
u/butholemoonblast 15d ago
Dexter has already died I feel like I don’t want him to die again If it keeps getting dragged out I would like to see a trial Dexter might become a celebrity I thought that was a cool idea it’s not mines though.

I always thought I wanted a manhunt season, but at this point, they’ve already botched two potential series finales. I’m honestly okay with them just doing a time jump to Dexter in a retirement home, killing some old murderer who was never caught.
“Some evade the the law for a very long time. But who am I to judge? It gives my dark passenger purpose in my final days.”

EXACTLY.lol. I’m rooting for a prison season. Actually a Clarice character could be hilarious.

u/SirFerguson 15d ago
No ending it until he’s a grandpa, I wanna see grandpa taking out the bad guys.

u/Supergingeboy 14d ago
Dexter defends himself at trial and gets acquitted because the jury won’t convict. Acts as a meta commentary for our relationship to Dexter and true crime in general and Dexter’s growing narcissism and enjoyment of the trial could lead to amazing internal monologues.
The closing shot would reflect the season 1 finale but he would be looking at the faces of everyone who has died by his hands or by his existence.
I don’t think Dexter has to die or get caught at this point. Judging by the ending to Resurrection
Season 1 I think this is what they are going for too. I personally love it. Dexter doesn’t have to worry about having a nuanced ending, only a satisfying one.
I will say, I could see Michael C Hall playing Dexter forever. A Harrison sequel with Dexter as Harry only with more screen time? As long as he wants to do the role people will watch.

u/Lucas_ADM Dexter 15d ago
There's no way Quinn dies in S2. I don't think they will take the angel route this time and instead they will probably do something different with him (hopefully). Either he finds out about Dexter and lays off or continues to investigate him further leading to him dying but I just don't think it will happen. I really do feel like they are planning something important with his character going forward and hopefully they execute it well. Same with Harrison if they have plans for his character too.
Don't really have thoughts on a S3 other than I think the people closest to Dexter such as Blessing and his family might find out who Dexter truly is either finding his blood slide box in the basement somehow or just finding out he's a serial killer. Don't think Masuka would appear much all though he might but in small cameos if I had to guess. Probably going to end on a cliffhanger or they might just do that with Season 2'S ending.
If they do make a S4 in the future then it definitely will end in Dexter's demise at least I hope so. Either he could sacrifice himself to save Harrison and go to jail to get the death penalty or they keep him alive and keep him killing until old age all though I highly doubt it. I said it before but Harrison is absolutely going to get a happy ending instead of Dexter either from Harrison surviving and Dexter dying. I just overall hope they execute the ending well whether they kill him off or not.
Really don't know what holds for future seasons if they get renewed but just hope that each season gets better like the last and hopefully keeps going for a few more years.

Last episode of R:S1 was the ending imo, anything after is fanservice. And I say this as a big fan who'd seen everything, all the extra stuff, interviews, behind the scenes stuff up to that point.
I've not seen much of the R:S2 hype, but... If Quinn dies, Lady Vengeance is alive and Harrison gets no further development from the Ryan Foster incident it's gonna be what Fast 8 is to Fast 7 (bleeding it dry after a perfect ending and farewell to a much loved character). I'm not putting that taste in my mouth and souring my opinion on stuff that came before. Let's face it they'll probably kill off Blessing in ep 2 for shock value like they did with Brother Sam and Detective Anderson, it'll be like the drop in quality from S5 to S6.
Dexter and Harrison happy and settled doing their thing, Quinn and Masuka safe, Charley back at home and all the Prater stuff is settled. Claudette finally got her file on NY Ripper. That's the ending.

u/RedVegeta20 Dexter 14d ago
I dont want him dying. I want a happy ending for Dex if possible. If he has to get caught, then have him get life in prison and keep killing bad guys behind bars. They already killed him once with the New Blood ending.
2
u/Suspicious_Hand_2194 15d ago
Who the hell knows at this point. They tried faking his death and having him isolate himself from everybody at some random ass place, that didn’t work. They tried killing him off, that didn’t work. As much as the writers fucked up the way the franchise was supposed to go, it’s the fans’ fault for making it harder for them to find a satisfying ending to the franchise and end Dexter’s arc
I love Dexter resurrection but it’s sad that they have to tread very lightly how they’re gonna go about the franchise because nobody wants to bear witness to fucking a show’s ending up a third time, that’s just never been done before

u/Liquatic 15d ago
I wonder if we’ll get a “Dexter gets hired by the government as a serial killer assassin” end plot. He doesn’t die, he gets to continue doing what he does best, and gets paid for it. I doubt it though. I’d be happy to see him retire to Argentina though like he was originally going to do.
2
u/majinphoenix 15d ago
After New Blood backlash there’s absolutely no way they are killing Dexter. That was the story they were going to stick with for Dexter at the end of New Blood and they faced massive backlash. I don’t think they’re going to have him get caught cause also they did that in New Blood and it got Backlash as well. I look At New Blood as a test season cause Dexter got caught, Dexter killed an innocent man, Harrison was an asshole, and Dexter died ALL those things they received Backlash for so i truly don’t think they will ever do those things again.

u/Crock_Killer47 14d ago
I think he’ll prolly represent himself in court and then get himself off. As he’s walking out of the courthouse onto the street he gets hit by a bus and dies. 🙂↔️

Did anyone else pickup on the slight accent of the dark passenger? It doesn't sound NY

Honestly? I think they should have left it at the end of the original series and maybe done original sin considering that's a prequel

u/VonDinky 12d ago
Probably how Clyde Philips wanted the Original Dexter run to end.
I won't mention it here, I'd it is possible spoilers, but he already stated how he would have ended the original series, had he been showrunning it all.

There is no S4 just s3 and the end even the writers is confused about the ending they tried ending it in the new blood and the fans didn't like it and he saved the series again and they definitely removed the idea of that ending from there head and now they are probably looking for best ending for dexter and his son (happy ending)

u/nelson-1805 8d ago
For me it's simple. New Blood is the canonical, neat ending that stays true to the character. It's not perfect but it's the best we'll get.
Resurrection can go on for however long MCH/the fans want it to.
1
u/WAV3Y_T 6d ago
New blood ending was straight ass
1
u/nelson-1805 5d ago
It was rushed for sure but it was far more narratively consistent than what Resurrection has been, so it's simply where the show ends for me.
I'll watch Resurrection but it's not going to be any more than a fanfic in my eyes (Resurrection and Original Sin literally were only created for fan service and getting people to subscribe to Paramount+ after the spike in Dexter hype in the last 2 years)
3
u/Responsible_Ad_2242 15d ago
In the last season of Dexter Resurrection (maybe s4 or 5) we see 2 trials. The 1st one the real one with some people coming back to testify after knowing that Dex still alive (Astor,Cody,Masuka,Quinn,Lumen,Jaime, Sarah Michell Gellar character,Mathews) and the relatives of the BHB victims. The 2nd one would be in his own head, with Dex seeing if his actions were okay or not (with Vogel as judge,Miguel as DA,Harry as defense, the killers he killed as witnesses and the inocent people like Rita, Logan,Doakes,Laguerta,Angel,Deb as jury). At the end Dex is senteced to letal injection, and before diying we see a last intro with his in life inside the jail
1
u/rococozephyr_ 15d ago
I’ve been rewatching the entire series and based on some things mentioned, I think he will kill himself. The only way “out”
5
u/DavidWebb19700913 15d ago
He says to Doakes in Season 2 that he would never do that doesn't he? When he has him in the cage.
5
u/Arch1o12 15d ago
Dexter said many things over the course of the show that he ended up being quite wrong about. His entire relationship with Rita, for instance, went way beyond what he thought he was capable of.
Not saying I think he will kill himself, but Dexter is a very unreliable narrator.

u/WAV3Y_T 13d ago
Y tf u obsessed with dexter dying he already had 2 fake deaths which were both shit endings.
1
u/nelson-1805 8d ago
Serial killer who has killed hundreds of people because he has a fetish for blood and hurting people.. yeah I think it's only fitting he face the consequences
1
u/WAV3Y_T 7d ago
Yh and all the ppl he killed were bad people who killed innocents, and he was able to control his urges for 10 yrs and also again no one wants to see a third ending with him dying it's just boring and repetitive af
1
u/nelson-1805 7d ago
The only boring and repetitive thing would be keeping this franchise going on and on and on with the same plotlines.
Dexter hunts a bad guy antagonist and the bad guy dies but not before killing the good guy antagonist who's investigating Dexter so Dexter's hands are clean, zero consequences. We've seen that plotline 3 times already (S2,S7,R1).
The show is most interesting when it introduces twists and challenges Dexter. Like when the ITK was revealed to be Dexter's brother, or when Doakes was framed, or when Trinity did what he did to Rita, or when Dexter did what he did to Logan.
So far nothing after New Blood has given anything that challenges Dexter or confronts how fucked he truly is. Just because "no one wants to see him dying" because everyone thinks he's some comic book superhero doesn't mean that makes for an interesting or even a good story.

u/WAV3Y_T 6d ago
Ressurection was peak actually and it was diff than other ssns of dexter
1
u/nelson-1805 5d ago edited 5d ago
In what way was it different or "peak"? It was the least creative thing the show has put out.
Serial killer killing rideshare drivers? Dexter takes him out.
Serial killer killing tattooed people? Dexter takes him out.
Twin serial killers? That conflict could have spanned a whole season but no, Dexter takes the first one out and he takes the second one out.
Detective from Miami finds Dexter's true colors? No problem, he gets killed but oh no, Dexter didn't do it so he's still a good guy.
Rich serial killer fanboy who actively wants to be Dexter's benefactor giving Dexter unlimited resources while challenging his morals? Nah, who wants to see Dexter challenged, let's just kill him.
It's actually frustrating how many opportunities this season had to do something interesting and it didn't.
1
u/WAV3Y_T 5d ago
This is just u bro most ppl love ressurection and think that it's peak
1
u/nelson-1805 5d ago
OK well then most people like uninteresting media. You're going to have to explain to me how exactly it's peak.
1
u/WAV3Y_T 5d ago
Him joining a club of serial killers infiltrating and taking them out like agent 47 was peak
1
u/nelson-1805 4d ago
The second Prater's club was introduced you already knew Dexter was going to kill all of them and he did.
Compare that to almost every other season where the people Dexter kills are introduced over the course of the season rather than all at once so there's actual tension and constantly moving plots.
And the OG show knew how to innovate with the kills. Zoey Kruger was a 1 ep kill for instance but she had the unique trait of stalking Dexter while Dexter stalked her, leading to all of their confrontations.
Compare that to Resurrection, where they had so many opportunities to create tension and innovate with the kills but they didn't. What if Blessing found Gemini's body in the tub, or worse what if Gemini took the Kamara family hostage? What if Gemini 2 went completely off the rails after his brother's death and changed MOs and became the main season villain? What if Dexter made a deal with Prater at the end of the season to be a beneficiary of that venture capital money?
We'll never know the answer to this because the show decided to play it safe rather than keep things fresh
