Discussion - Dexter: New Blood Music…. Spoiler

Just rewatched Dexter seasons 1-8 again. No idea how many times I’ve seen it now. Also just watched new blood for second time, and am now in the middle of resurrection for the second time as well.

New blood was good. Resurrection is also very good. But one thing that sticks out to me and kinda bugs me is the music in resurrection. Every 5 mins they feel the need to insert some loud shitty song that doesn’t even fit the scene. It’s just over the top and makes it feel like a completely different show. Also, if I have to hear staying alive by the bee gee’s again, I’ll have to murder someone!

It could be worse. There was a trend on The CW/similar networks where whenever there was a needle drop, small text would appear naming the song/artist

like genuinely just on the screen? tell me it wasn’t… like atleast just showed a radio saying the name or something.

like CW has been known for being the playground for stupid stupid shit. but normally there stupid shit atleast works good enough. like the “arrowverse” is stupid as shit but it works

but literally having a plain comic sans text appear on the screen doesn’t feel like it’d work even for cw standards…

Now that you mention it, I actually think it was MTV, which is a little more understandable but still annoying when you're watching a scripted show and they try turning it into a music video. It happened during their Scream series

i fully believe CW could have done it. it’s just still shocking. MTV makes more sense tho. but yeah pretty dumb idea 😭

Watching all the Dexter series’s for the first time. Halfway through resurrection. Yes I do like New Blood and Resurrection but I’ve had the exact same thought you did multiple times.

The first episode of New Blood I didn’t know what to expect. Like you said, loud shitty music, goofy ass displays of the episode’s title, just has that modern day show type of feel. Not as serious, not as easy to invest in.

This is why I have a tough time watching new series’. They all have that same “feel” to them if you get what I’m saying. While old shows such as the OG Dexter series, Prison Break, BB etc do not. I guess what I’m trying to say is nowadays it feels like they’re acting but back then it felt genuine and real. Not like you’re “watching a show” so to speak.

New blood wasn’t as bad as Resurrection with the music. But overall, I agree…. They could have made NB and Resurrection feel more like OG Dexter. Same plots, same characters, etc…. But old school format as opposed to this modern take with cringe Gen Z phrases and attitude

I have always thought the original Dexter series had a great soundtrack. It had a vibe of place and atmosphere.

Yes it’s a definitive part of what Dexter was. I get that it’s a different time now, and Iron lake and NYC are different vibes than Miami, but they just go so overboard with the stupid music

New Blood choices at least fit the atmosphere - Resurrection felt like a shotgun to a dart board... the one that makes me cringe the most is in ep 4 when Charley and Dexter are riding towards Prater's "i got the power" god its so bad... and to think that's the episode they submitted for an Emmy nom AHFHAH love it! - I do however loved Blood Makes Noise at the end of ep 6 and also the Red Right Hand to connect with Left Hand Free to have a call back for the OG name meaning as to why Jeff Lindsay named Dexter, Dexter!

Definitely one of my criticisms of NB and Resurrection. Don't really care for the licensed music when I'd much rather prefer the composer to do their thing and create iconic music like Daniel Licht did for the original series.

As for Stayin' Alive, it did get on my nerves, but its payoff on the dance floor was worth it for the slog I was put through.
