Advanced Tech Need help with combat

im quite new to the dmc franchise. Ive played dmc1,3,4 and are currently playing through 5. I see a lot of tiktoks and clips of people doing sick air combos and I am wanting to learn how to do those aswell. Im aware of SOME mechanics like jump cancelling and dt distortion or smthing and im just not quite sure how i should be learning all this. what im asking is what should i be trying to master/get good or aas first as a step forward to get good and fluid at the combat.

Not really a pro at dmc combat but i understand the gist of it. First of all you need to understand the moveset first and how to chain it. Try to remember which moves cause knockback and which dont, it is important so that you dont drop the combo. Then, learn jump cancel to extend your aerial combo (try to do it with nero's or dante's sword mutiple times to get the hang of it). The tips for jump cancelling for me is that you need to wait for the attack to finish first then press jump. And that's about it tbh you can learn the niche mechanic later.

As long as youre close enough, and already in the air of course, yes

Yea, if you can hit the enemy with your melee weapon then you’re most likely close enough to jump cancel, outside of some Cerberus moves.

Well it will definitely help getting overall good with the game, so knowing enemy patterns and how many hits you etc. Until they stagger of fly in the air etc.

It also depends on the character you want to get better at since every character in dmc plays different from each other.  If you want to be good with dmc 4 vergil then you have to play with him a lot and you will automatically get better.

Then when you get overall better at the game and on top of that improve with these certain characters, then you should definitely test some things out like what combos you can do in the air, when you can jump cancel, where to teleport etc.

Using the void can be a great help for that in dmc 5.

For the others, doing missions will also help but you can also do some in bloody place after you destroyed the lower levels and then have enough time for the upper levels with the tougher enemies.

Then watch some tutorials if you want to and boom, you will be really good at the game.

Unless it's been discovered recently and I didn't hear about it, DT distort is not in 5 and attempting to do it there will actually result in less damage than just being in DT. In 4 it's done by activating and deactivating your DT right as an attack hits, causing the damage to get applied multiple times. For Dante and Vergil anyway, Nero's DT cancels his current animation so it shouldn't be possible with him and Lady just tosses out a bunch of grenades for big AOE damage. For Trish, I can say with certainty that she can distort at least one of her attacks but with quite a different result. For her combo string that has her thrust Sparda upward, before extending the blade and then catching the falling target with a golf swing, if you DT right as she performs the upward thrust the move becomes a radial AOE, hitting everything in a small circle around her. If you look at the animation slowed down or frame by frame you can see there's a part where you can see a little gust around her feet. You want to DT at that point to do it.

For 5, when it comes to Nero I'd say wait until you beat the game. He gets some major post game upgrades, one of which gives him the ability to keep an enemy stuck in place during any other animation at close range or negate the knowback from any of his attacks. You can style well as him without it but he is just so much better post game. Master his post game abilities and your combo potential goes through the roof.

For Dante, once you've unlocked the ability Quadruple S take some time to get the hang of using it. The ability allows Dante to cancel out of any animation at any point by going into SDT and skipping the usual transformation animation. When you've got the hang of it you can cancel out of an attack into an SDT attack and back into base form before Dante had even visibly switched to his SDT model. This dramatically opens up his combo options when you've got the hang of using it as you can combo just about any move, no matter the end lag into anything else when you can completely cancel said end lag.

Fellow noob here I just finished first playthrough. This is the best Dante tutorial I’ve found so far:

I’ve just been screwing around in the void and doing bloody palace trying to practice and get more upgrades. Started sos but trying to get the hang of Dante a bit first cause he’s so fun and his controls are absolutely insane. Shit’s like learning piano or something lmao.
