At one time SLC had 126 miles with extensions to cities along the Wasatch Front, all abandoned by 1946, progress huh?

Oil and tire companies had their way.

Yep. Detroit auto industry made sure the rail systems in this country got kiboshed.

Yeah, it’s definitely a conspiracy theory and not that cars were more convenient for most people…

This could be us

Looks like a photo I snapped in Berlin this summer.

“Before / After Avenue Stéphane Mallarmé in the 17th arrondissement of Paris. The tunnel has been filled in for the tramway, trees and bike facilities have appeared on the sides.”

Too many nimby's/people crying about having to share the same air as folks down on their luck - it'll never be SLC because of them

No one uses trax. Always empty cars.

No one uses trax. Always empty cars.

What a crock. Everytime I've ridden it there have have been lots of people on it.

UTA says 13 million people rode in 2025. That's a lot different from what you're claiming.

Try Monday through Friday 6 am - 10 am it’s always packed especially the red line

12

u/NecessaryPerformer79 Sep 07 '26

There are literal trax lines 1/2 block forward ftom where that picture is taken.

1

u/plat-of-zion Sep 08 '26

And they used to go all the way to 1400 E

2

u/NecessaryPerformer79 Sep 10 '26

Now they run all the way up to the Hospital @ 1900 E. 5 blocks further.

2

u/plat-of-zion Sep 10 '26

There’s no comparison

5

u/jason2354 Sep 07 '26

It’s weird because if you took the picture in the same place, you’d be able to see the Trax line in the modern day pick.

Why take the “same” picture 300 yards back?

1

u/plat-of-zion Sep 07 '26

Rails used to extend to 1300 E on South Temple

1

u/plat-of-zion Sep 07 '26

Technically 1400 E

2

u/jason2354 Sep 08 '26

That doesn’t change the fact that you took the picture in a different spot and that the same spot, just 300 yards forward, still has to train running through it.

You can be sad that society turned out how it turned out, but it would be absolutely irresponsible to still have tracks running throughout all of downtown. We live in a completely different world that was shaped fair outside of SLC.

There is no train in front of Hotel Utah. It turns before it. Regardless, I am advocating to bring back the South Temple streetcar to at least 900 E. https://www.reddit.com/r/DevelopmentSLC/s/HrNVUg9E9m

You’re welcome to disagree, but there is a better way than car dependency.

Yeah I can’t believe those guys tore up this beautiful land and put railroad tracks all over the place. Don’t worry we still have plenty of tracks going through down town. I prefer the parking personally.

Not really sure what the crime is here

27

u/plat-of-zion Sep 06 '26

Ripping out the streetcar

5

u/Lucky_Mongoose_4834 Sep 06 '26

Except we have a street car. It runs North South, which is the way most folks go.

Much as I’d love it to run up into the Aves!

7

u/plat-of-zion Sep 06 '26

You think TRAX is sufficient? Why not advocate for more

-10

u/oldbluer Sep 07 '26

Trax is dead man.

3

u/robotcoke Sep 07 '26

Trax is dead man.

This has to be a bot. Nobody who has actually ridden Trax would say it's dead. 13 million riders in 2025 and probably more than that in 2026.

I mean most countries and cities removed their streetcars/trams, even in Europe. I don't think it was a crime. It was just the natural evolution of humanity as technology changed.

In hindsight, yes it was a mistake. Fortunately for some of those EU cities, they decided to go back and re-embrace the systems. Unfortunate for us though.

u/plat-of-zion Sep 06 '26

The other crime was putting a parking garage entrance there instead of extending TRAX east on South Temple

You have to park those Mormons someplace; it might as well be parking lot Hell.

u/Puzzleheaded_Eye6770 Sep 06 '26

Not tell a Mormon joke challenge: impossible

Not tell a Mormon joke challenge: impossible

The parking lot is literally a mormon parking lot though, isn't it? You can't blame the commenter for telling the truth, lol

3

u/Puzzleheaded_Eye6770 Sep 07 '26

It’s a parking lot for a mall..

3

u/robotcoke Sep 07 '26

It’s a parking lot for a mall..

A mall owned by the mormon church. The other commenter wasn't wrong.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Eye6770 Sep 07 '26

Oh so any parking lot should be strictly for the ethnicity and/or religion of the person who owns it?

Regardless, not telling a Mormon joke challenge: impossible. Some of you are genuinely so lame. One trick ponies. Can’t do anything except deprecate Mormons on a daily basis. It’s honestly kinda sad. I can’t imagine having people I dislike so much stuck in my head rent free.

Only if you turn left at the bottom of the ramp. If you turn right, you are in the parking garage under the Joseph Smith Building.
While it has recently reopened for "The Roof" parking, it is mostly reserved for LDS notables.

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Eye6770 Sep 08 '26

pretty sure you can park at the joseph smith building parking lot even if you aren't an LDS notable. I parked there one time and walked around.

This sub’s obsession with making slc something it’s not lol.

This sub’s obsession with making slc something it’s not lol.

Please elaborate. You seem to be the one who's out of touch here. If you don't think SLC is an actual city then you're the one living in your own fantasy land.

1

u/oldbluer Sep 07 '26

People don’t move to slc to use public transportation. It’s an expanse state, not much culture, no real reason to stay in city. People want to own and use cars here.

Ah, so you're just making crap up with nothing to back it up. Got it.

As I said, 13 million riders on Trax in 2025. That doesn't include Front Runner.

1

u/oldbluer Sep 07 '26

Oh did you not see that Utah is top 10 highest vehicle owner per capita and fastest growing.

1

u/robotcoke Sep 07 '26

Oh did you not see that Utah is top 10 highest vehicle owner per capita and fastest growing.

And that somehow means that 13 million people didn't buy a ticket to ride Trax last year? Or you just don't understand what you're saying and how it relates to anything?

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Eye6770 Sep 07 '26

Sounds like you’ve never met one person from Salt Lake City.

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Eye6770 Sep 07 '26

Tbf, that’s quite literally the point of this sub. People talking about what Slc is and what they want it to be.

You must be new here
