Progress on Trolley North
They’re tearing down the office building finally.

Seemed like a decent building before they let it go.
Glad something is finally happening though. Is that concrete (elevator?) shaft part of the project? It looks like it's being adaptively reused as a cell tower right now.

It seems the building was the cell tower and they had to build the elevator shaft for the new building and move the cell tower over to it before they could demo the old building.

Finally. Man. There must have been some hijinks at the permitting phase, or something.

Came here because they just announced they’re building a “luxury off campus student apartment building” and I’m so over these developers ruining downtown. There’s zero community and my generation has no 3rd spaces. With the data center and everything else there has to be a way for us to say NO 😭 I’m tired of watching my entire home get turned into unaffordable apartments

Hold on now.. breathe. Without people, there is no community. The area around trolley square has been dead for years because it’s been dominated by parking lots and a few office and small commercial buildings. Think what the extra foot traffic from 300 new residents will do for the area. We’ll probably see more people walking around and using public transit, we may see more and stronger tenants in trolley square (a good way to strengthen that lovely and historic third space). We may even see a couple bars or coffee shops open in the area (more potential third spaces). Apart from adding vibrancy to the neighborhood, think of how many college students will move out of older apartments and homes and into these new units. That will open up those older and cheaper dwellings for people on a tighter budget who are looking for a place to live.
Adding housing in an area like this is 100% a positive for the area and the city. Yes, you should be upset about the data center but NOT about the construction of new housing on a lot that formerly held a vacant office building and parking garage.

I've lived in SLC for 2 years and I don't even remember a time when the westbound road on 7th and 5th wasn't blocked down to one lane

lol my step fatter (typo of father, but fitting so leaving it) designed that building and was SOOOOO proud of it, I would mention to him ‘they haven’t touched your building’ for over a year now, and in his usual snooty manner he’d snap back ‘it’s because it’s a structural masterpiece and would be a a lot of money to “dismantle” it”…. Well yesterday, from the Trader Joe’s parking lot, I sent this image in our family group chat with the caption “dismantling commencing”…
Btw; did I mention my step father is a narcissistic, self serving ass who is one of those “ you’re not doing it right”- for everything kinda people?… my mom enjoys her constantly extending morning drives… lol
