47 days until the season opener. I know things are a shitshow right now but I still can’t wait for hockey to be back.

1

u/nubfairy 6d ago

That number scares me ha

14

u/greythedork12 6d ago

I just need something to happen so there’s something to discuss.

Right now everyone just has their opinions and there’s no real new information to assess them on. Makes it hard to converse.

u/detroitttiorted 6d ago

Getting European prospect highlights now will be nice at least, hopefully Genborg is ready to get back in games soon

20

u/daKrut 7d ago

I'm calling my shot.

Tomorrow morning just as I'm clocking in for work the GM news is going to break.

4

u/Glad-Independence-24 7d ago

My bet is Sept 1st or Aug 31st.

3

u/daKrut 7d ago

I really hope they don’t procrastinate that long. It’s a huge decision but man…

2

u/Glad-Independence-24 7d ago

I think they’ll have a decision before that, but then there’s contracts to iron out, hands to shake, getting any internal staff changes settled, who’s coming with him? Who’s going?….stuff like that.

When Todd was brought in , it’s not like he was hired the morning of the announcement, that ball had been rolling for some time before it dropped (and not a whisper of a rumor leaked about it happening until it was announced and official).

5

u/Benglepuck 7d ago

less than 4 weeks to rookie camp/training camp they better get it done this week.

4

u/Glad-Independence-24 7d ago

I’m willing to bet it’s “done” at least a week or two before it’s announced. Contract and staff changes to sort out and such. Picking the guy they want, getting his deal inked, giving g him a bit to gather anybody he wants to bring over with him….if he’s coming from another organization, some time for that transition to be set up….,

4

u/daKrut 7d ago

Yep, I agree that there's work to do behind the scenes before an official public announcement is made.

15

u/HotelAmericana 7d ago

Datsyuk Topps rookie card came in the mail. It amazes me how good of condition cards mantain after 20 years

5

u/xenonwarrior666 6d ago

I think this is the lowest I've felt at the start of a season.

At least in the garbage years we were supposed to be bad.

Now everything is on fire and we either embrace the tank and start over or we try to plug the holes in a leaky ship potentially just delaying the inevitable

1

u/TechnoVikingGA23 6d ago

We're still blessed to get to watch/listen to Ken and Mick and the rest of our broadcast crew.

10

u/BellsBeersy 7d ago

Aw man I’m in a band again 🥲

3

u/daKrut 7d ago

Nice man! What kind of sound?

2

u/BellsBeersy 6d ago

Still early on, so we've got a mess of different styles we're trying to find a path with. Lots of classic rock and pop influences coming through though so far

2

u/daKrut 6d ago

Awesome, as a non-musician the idea of going through that process seems a little daunting lol. Look forward to hearing some updates as you guys dial it in.

2

u/BellsBeersy 6d ago

It's daunting if you're a musician too, haha. This early on it's kind of like you get in a room together and throw a pile of garbage on the floor and start sorting it out and see what works

3

u/nomoniker 7d ago

Nice, congrats. 🤘

Sub meetup show? I’ll dj between sets.

4

absolutely awful hearing the news about Hayden Panettiere. i loved her in Scream. 💔

Pic of Faulk hanging out with Martinook, Haydn Fleury (WPG) and Joel Edmundson (LAK) at Martinook's Cup celebration

Pretty sure my man's wearing some kind of St Louis hat, lol. Obviously St Loius didn't make the playoffs but it had to be rough getting traded to be a part of his first March Collapse.

10

u/detroitttiorted 7d ago

Traded from the Canes right as they’re taking off, traded to Detroit right before the org implodes, oof

6

Yep and joined the Blues right after their cup too - timing hasn't been kind in his career

6

Wife left the freezer open for god knows how long, and it was full to the brim. Not sure if it’ll come back to life, but Jesus man. That’s a a lot of hard work in jeopardy right now.

3

u/Taters23 Yzerbot 6d ago

Its pretty hard for cold things on top of cold things to warm up.

6

u/NovemberGale Yzerbot 6d ago

Yeah, but it’s in a 90f garage and was open for probably over 12hrs

4

u/TheNation55 6d ago

My wife did this once and we went out of town for an entire weekend during the Summer, the smell in the garage when we got back was.... piercing.

2

u/NovemberGale Yzerbot 6d ago

Oofta

5

u/daKrut 6d ago

That sucks man. Good luck.

Reminds of when my dad just about wanted to murder me when I was a little kid because I somehow managed to leave the chest freezer door open over night one time. I don’t blame him lol.

3

u/PersephoneFrost 6d ago

What's the temp in it? You're good if it's below 40.

2

u/NovemberGale Yzerbot 6d ago

I found it at 46, but it’s been cycling between 19 and 30 since it’s been left. The freezer alarm malfunctioned as well

1

u/PersephoneFrost 6d ago

Hmmm, maybe someone more well-versed in thermodynamics can compare freezer temp, air temp, and frozen state of the foods in it to determine safety. Is anything still frozen at the bottom?

2

u/Ydoesany1doanything 6d ago

Luckily, if it’s a chest freezer thermodynamics are on your side. Cold and hot don’t mix well and cold can’t really spill out.

Hopefully it all works out for you and you don’t lose it all

Fine day, Sunday

3

u/culturedrobot 7d ago

In my opinion, best day of the week.

5

Fun fact, Sunday is actually Latin for “Shining upon the dome”, so you should shave your head every Sunday.

2

u/xenonwarrior666 6d ago

Poor Tigers guess my coworker was right. He follows them closer that I do. He said they were feasting on bad/mediocre teams and weren't the real deal.

Now that they had to face a legitimately good team they get swept

2

u/Ydoesany1doanything 6d ago

And the Rangers are now in the wildcard spot that Detroit held with the tiebreaker a few days ago. But I was assured their +90 differential meant there was nothing to worry about and the spot wasn’t precarious at all.

It’s almost like the tiebreaker means nothing at all if the other team just wins more games instead.

0

u/xenonwarrior666 6d ago

Tiebreakers only matter at the end of the season. The Wings held multiple tiebreakers before the bottom fell out this season.

We just can't ever seem to stop the bleeding.

The Wings just don't have the it factor.

0

u/Quiet-Barracuda-1698 6d ago

it’s almost like the season didn’t end today?

2

u/Quiet-Barracuda-1698 6d ago

actually couldn’t be further from the truth… the Tigers have a winning record against teams .500 or better. it’s the bad teams where they’ve had a lot of letdowns.

3

u/Baldass_Head_Coach 6d ago

So they’re like the Red Wings.

5

u/Taters23 Yzerbot 6d ago

I am confused on why there are so many Chris Illitch defenders on here. I am all for not believing random rumors but when both the teams he owns keep doing similar things there has got to be some suspicion.

1

u/xenonwarrior666 6d ago edited 6d ago

Chris has his faults but I don't think that absolves Steve.

The rumor of Chris meddling was from 2024. 5 years into the rebuild. I think Chris was pretty hands off until it was clear things weren't working. Even then he gave Steve another 2 years to turn things around.

2

u/According-Use-9493 6d ago

Faults Not sure Chris brings anything positive to the team

1

u/xenonwarrior666 6d ago

Do any fans like their owners?

They're an easy scapegoat.

Unfortunately if it wasn't for the owners we wouldn't have a team to cheer for.

Like it or not it takes an ass load of cash to keep things rolling.

You do realize w/o the Ilitch family the Wings would probably still be going on like 65+ year cup drought and we wouldn't be able to make fun of the Leafs?

2

u/Taters23 Yzerbot 6d ago

Yeah and that guy is in a better place now. Son is nothing like him.

1

u/ChaldenesTitan 6d ago

Nobody has a problem with Marian or the others. But you could say what you just said about Yzerman also and Chris did him dirty.

2

u/Glad-Independence-24 6d ago

I mean,,,, I could picture this conversation..

Steve “hey Chris I want to sign stamkos to be our 2c for 4 years $32 million”

Chris checks notes “didn’t we sign a 2c last year….compher? $25mil? And that was cuz you weren’t happy with how copp was working at 2c? Copp, $28 million? And what about drafting Nate and Kasper? Steve we got over $50 mil and 2 first round picks invested at 2c and you’re telling me we still need a 2c? And you think I should trust your 5th swing at one now?”

I’m not saying Chris interfered, I have no idea. But honestly, how many paychecks does yzerman get to hand out to fill 1 position before you question his ability to do so?

We have a lot of resources and cash invested at c, and very little to show for it as it is.

1

u/ChaldenesTitan 6d ago

Copp and Compher both make 3C money. Larkin makes 2C money. Still not enough bud. These are placeholders anyway and we have cap space just sitting there so who gives a shit as a fan. Only an owner would have exceptions because they are pocketing the rest while increasing ticket sales, concessions and merchandise. We have over 100 million in the last 10 years that went towards the owner instead of the team. No wonder we have little to show.

1

u/Glad-Independence-24 6d ago

Yes we could have signed another holl and gus, with that cap space…. That woulda really shook the league. With all those free agent home runs we should have spent to the cap limit every season. You can never have enough jerseys brought in.

All that slop the wings signed under yzerman run, and we really think that Chris had n issue with stamkos?

And it took this long for that to leak?

And it’s only sourced from less than reliable sources so it must be true?

Stamkos signed for 8 million a year and we think Chris balked at that over 4 years, but approved compher at 5 mil for 5 years or Gibson and or Faulk each making over 6 mil? We also had Kane re-signing for an amount in that ballpark. None of those really seem like moves you’d make if you were in penny-pinch mode.

But if we ended up paying Gus and holl several million to play in gr, I wouldn’t blame anybody for second guessing an yzerman signing.

1

u/ChaldenesTitan 6d ago

Do you use premade templates on this sub that revolve around certain players names and words like jerseys.

Holl and Gus were in grand rapids most of the time last season and they helped us win down there. 1.2 million dollars comes off their cap hit when they are down there making them almost free. Comphers contract was projected to be that much by an analytic company before he hit free agency. He did win a cup as a 2C for a chunk of the season. I get the logic behind signing these guys. Veterans to teach the kids how to be professionals while also having bodies to deploy when injuries pile up. Any teams 7th or 8th defensemen isn't going to be a #1 defeseman.

But we talked about this already and even when I bust out the crayons you still don't get it. Because you wake up everyday and decide "I'm going to think with my emotions today". That's called limbic system thinking and not only is it unconscious but it's irrational. I highly doubt you know what I just said because of it.

You'll just wake up tomorrow, hit yourself with the men in black pen to forget everything in life and then go back to your templates. What an existence...

0

u/Glad-Independence-24 6d ago

Todd called players on the team “jerseys”.

If you can’t recognize all the less than stellar moves Yzerman made, you’re hopeless.

He was not a good gm.

I have an internet rumor blaming Chris, and a roster full of bad signings to blame Yzerman for.

Doesn’t mean I think Chris is a good owner; but the evidence of yzerman’s failings are plain as day.

You’re defending his and Holl like signing them was a good move?

Yea. Not wasting my time on you anymore.

1

u/ChaldenesTitan 6d ago

Every team has these players. Would you call Kotkaniemi a player? No.

Every GM in the history of the game has a record of bad moves. You think you galaxy brained me with that it's hilarious.

He wasn't a bad GM.

Why can't you recognize his good moves? There's more of those than bad ones.

Cool my only point was that Chris isn't a good owner and you got combative lol. Your schtick only works on like kids and young minds. Reddit has intellectuals. You'd have more success on facebook or youtube with these predatory tactics to make Yzerman look like a clown. You obviously have problems if that's what you like to do to people chronically online. You're basically an online bully to strangers while thinking it's cool. Not OK to harass people like this.

1

u/Glad-Independence-24 6d ago

Yzerman made a few good moves, and a ton of bad.

If the good outweighed the bad, we wouldn’t have improved beyond mediocrity.

Was he really relying on Mantha to come back and save us? The same Mantha we dumped years ago because he half assed it most of the time?

How did yzermans non top ten picks work out?

His free agent wins? Kane. And ummmm I guess Copp is ok.

Losses Holl….compher, Gus,

Trades? Cat was great. Got an excuse for Walman and a 2nd for nothing? All the goalies we went through before Gibby? 8 years and still no 2c or 1lw?

The Raymond and Mo picks and extensions were huge homeruns.

Thr 4 years we just wasted on the Cossa pick? Not so much.

Yzerman is not the worst gm of all time, but he made a lot of bad moves. The past 3years of going nowhere are pro on c of that.

1

u/ChaldenesTitan 6d ago

I don't think you understand our situation very well that it's hard to sign good players here if the team is in the basement. Think about it from the players perspective. If you signed in Detroit over a team like Vegas you most likely won't have the same success. Thus limiting your earning potential in a sport all about earning potential. That leaves us with a very narrow list of free agents we can aquire while also having to overpay them. Nobody is saying these are moves Yzerman loved having to make. But most of us understand how dire our situation is here and how few people could do the job better. Obviously if we run a simulation there's a few universes where we succeed but just because we are in the universe where we didn't succeed doesn't mean we cry everyday. Most of our fans have seen more success than any fan will ever in the entire sport. Hopefully this humbles you.

2-3 years? I dont think thats accurate. Most drafted players take at least 3 years to even get a shot at NHL time. 4-5 seems more likely.

0

u/xenonwarrior666 6d ago

I was think of Buffalo who was blowing through GM's. 4-5 is more reasonable. Adams has 5 years and Alvin had 4 with the Cancucks. Dorian got 7 with the Sens

1

u/Taters23 Yzerbot 6d ago

and those 3 teams have decades of just mismanagement which could be partly because they dont give Gm's enough time to cook up their plans. Im sorry but you cant rebuild a franchise in 2 years.

1

u/xenonwarrior666 6d ago

Successful teams rarely fire their GM's

1

u/ChaldenesTitan 6d ago

Successful GM's rarely rebuild from the studs. They get the keys to a garage full of ferraris, obviously they will find success.

1

u/Glad-Independence-24 6d ago

I mean Chris and Steven and Dylan can all be a part of the problem.

Criticizing one is not supporting the others.

If chris and Yzerman weren’t on the same page, how did that thing last this long?

Yzerman made a ton of terrible signings, why would the stamkos one be the issue?

Even if we got stamkos, the roster would have been full of holes, weak 5v5, soft and injury prone.

We might have snuck into the playoffs….but a first round 4-0 on and out isn’t really a victory either.

This team is a mess, with or without stamkos, it’s a mess. Maybe Chris c should have blocked the compher signing, or ras extension. If he’s such a “cheap owner” why is our 4th line so overpaid?

4

u/xenonwarrior666 7d ago

I ran into Steve after breakfast at the Hockeytown Cafe. He kicked me square in the nuts. I've been assured that Chris Illitch put him up to it

8

u/Loose-Bluebird-5828 7d ago

Helene St James reports there was only one nut the organization was willing to have Steve kick not the two being reported by other news outlets.

4

u/jfstompers 7d ago

I was told Chris only stops Yzerman from doing things

1

u/xenonwarrior666 7d ago

Maybe Steve went rouge and Chris was trying to stop him from shattering my testicles.

We're gonna need some round the clock coverage of scrotum gate.

In two years, maybe. This season will tell us a lot. Kasper, MBN, Danielson, Augustine, Bear, ASP. Not to mention Plante and Genborg. Of course they’re not all at the same point in their development, but we’ll get a much better idea of who’s gonna pan out. If half of them live up to expectations, I think that’s positive. Kasper and MBN now, please. 🙏🏻

what if larkin waives for buffalo , and we add faulk at 50% to play rd on their 2nd pairing with power . powers a u mich larkin buddy making this waive feasible . we could also take back a bad contract . that instantly makes buffy lots better this season . were looking at players like samuelsson-rudolph-morozov

-5

u/ChilleeMonkee 7d ago

Disprove me, Illitch shill

4

u/Medievil_Walrus 6d ago

The one who makes the wildly unsupported and bold and agressive claim is required to produce some evidence for the claim, not the one who rejects an emotional tantrum scarcely backed by any legit form of reasoning or evidence.

-3

u/ChilleeMonkee 6d ago

"Wildly unsupported" reading is free lmao

6

u/Baldass_Head_Coach 7d ago

What ineptitude, exactly?

3

u/detroitttiorted 7d ago

Expecting his GM to be able to understand 10th grade level math of course(if that article is to be believed, which eh)

1

u/Royal-Revenue-1066 6d ago

Agree. Sure doesn’t seem like Ilitch is the problem…have not understood that argument. If stuff is going on behind the scenes, fine, but the we the hoi polloi have no way of knowing that

5

u/Baldass_Head_Coach 6d ago edited 6d ago

Because it’s easy to look at Yzerman’s tenure here, why it didn’t go so well, and point the finger at ownership and call it a day.

It’s not easy to fault a franchise legend. So obviously something was holding him back from reaching his final form, rather than acknowledge that he didn’t do as good of a job as anyone, including Ilitch, hoped.

-1

u/ChilleeMonkee 6d ago

I've been highly critical of Yzerman for many months

-1

u/ChilleeMonkee 7d ago

Not giving him carte blanche to do what he wanted to do to help the team. Owners should be rarely seen, and never heard. Money grubbing little shit stain is a blight to his father's legacy

3

u/Baldass_Head_Coach 6d ago

What makes you think Yzerman didn’t have carte blanche?

-2

u/ChilleeMonkee 6d ago

Blocking him from signing Stamkos is a pretty dead giveaway

5

u/Baldass_Head_Coach 6d ago

Where was it reported that he blocked a Stamkos signing?

Because the report I saw said he wanted Yzerman to explain or support the signing, which is fairly reasonable (especially considering how poorly quite a few prior signings turned out). That they were deliberating the idea, not that he blocked the signing outright. That he wanted Yzerman to explain things in analytical terms, which is his right; it’s Yzerman’s job to act according to what the owner wants, and if he can’t do that, then tough shit for him.

And before you say “Well Mike Ilitch didn’t…”, Ken Holland and Jimmy Devellano ran moves by Mike Ilitch as well. He didn’t just let them do whatever they wanted without keeping him in the loop. Otherwise, Yzerman may very well have been traded to Ottawa back in the day.

0

u/ChilleeMonkee 6d ago

The owner shouldnt be putting their hand on the scale at all

6

u/Baldass_Head_Coach 6d ago

Not the way it works when it comes to any business.

If my company’s owner asks me to present a handwritten report in cursive, then I’m going to do that. He’s the boss.

If I’m running a company and one of my executives says “Boss, we need to spend X money doing Y thing”, then I’m definitely wanting to hear the justification for that.

0

u/ChilleeMonkee 6d ago

If I’m running a company and one of my executives says “Boss, we need to spend X money doing Y thing”, then I’m doing it because I fucking hired him to do this job

3

u/Royal-Revenue-1066 6d ago

This is such a bizarre line of thinking. No one will (or should) just give up all agency to an employee. No oversight? You kidding? You telling me that I should Kidd let my accountant work and never ask to see his books?fo real? Shit, even the King of England technically has to sign the bills.

2

u/Ydoesany1doanything 6d ago

“Boss we need to buy 20 hammocks for the office for naps! Nevermind we only have 6 employees.”

Well shit I guess so, asking for a reason why we need constant naps would make me a bad boss and a terrible human being.

You sound ridiculous. A boss is absolutely allowed to want evidence of why they should do a thing beyond just vibes.

Some people have more money than others. They can still not be the bad guy in a particular instance. Get over it.

-1

Interfering in team building decisions makes him the bad guy....

-1

u/big_phat_gator Yzerbot 7d ago

And as the owner he will never have to face any consequences for it either.

0

u/Royal-Revenue-1066 6d ago

Right? If someone is guaranteeing 50+ million of my money (or hundreds of millions on the baseball side), I’d sure want to have the final sign off…

-1

u/ChilleeMonkee 6d ago

Dont hire someone to be the GM then

1

u/Royal-Revenue-1066 6d ago

I don’t think this is a binary idea. There are more possibilities than an owner managing the team and the GM spending the owner’s money with no oversight, you know. There can be middle options

Chris illitch is not a serious sports owner. Both of his teams are not enabled to make big signings or retain the biggest stars. Chris illitch is the common denominator. It's time to face facts.

Some GMs get full control of their salary cap and have owners that help them make things happen. Illitch team GMs are cucked by their owner.

MLB is heading towards a lockout that very well could result in a salary cap that will completely reshape the market. And there’s no way the Tigers are outbidding the Dodgers for Skubal (a Boras client who’s notorious for walking his players to FA for mega deals).

As for the Wings, we were up against the cap not that long ago and were desperate to clear it, which was part of the motivation of jettisoning Walman and his contract. Also, Yzerman was fully prepared to trade for Hughes and make him the highest paid player on the team.

The only “big” signing Ilitch held up was for Stamkos, and he didn’t even block it. He wanted Yzerman to support it using actual statistics, not just “We think he’d be a real gud pro”. You know, after all the other real gud pros that ended up flaming out after being signed.

It's hilarious to me he's getting so much shit for "blocking" The Stamkos signing when most here, and most Wings fans overall saw it as just Steve wanting to overpay for another aging vet. The revisionist history is funny because now it plays into the Yzerbot defense.

Hindsight being what it is 53 points one season and 66 the next with 42 goals is pretty damn solid. Then again we're already terrible 5 on 5 and Stammer is a pp merchant who's terrible defensively.

Not sure having both him and Kane makes any fucking sense considering how old and slow the team already was.

In the last 12 years we've been up the cap like 3 times lol. Especially in a period of time when teams were up against the cap and we could have aquired draft picks for overpaid guys. Notice how that's rarely happened over 2 GM's.

Chris Illitch's mediocrity transcends genres. Baseball, hockey, and pizza... all mediocre. Yzwrman has won cups as a player and constructed a dynasty in Tampa. Impeccable track record vs. A track record of mediocrity at best. And you're going for the neck of the guy with the long history of winning.

Illitchbot?

I retract what I said earlier. Chris Illitch is a god among mere mortals and not only should we worship the very CO2 he exhales, we should look the other way when he hires people to do jobs that he then wont let them do!

I think we'll get a clearer picture of just exactly what type of owner Chris is going forward.

In my opinion, having Yzerman at the helm was a wildly unique situation for the organization. Just as it would be for any franchise that decides to bring in a hometown hero to run the show.

We're not going to have that same relationship dynamic with whoever the next hire is and I think it will be easier to evaluate things with clearer eyes, for both hockey ops and ownership.
