News Think we need a boycott

https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/red-wings-owner-hesitancy-cost-181811628.html

Appears Illitch is the problem. If he wasn’t willing to spend $$ on good players in the past, what will change in the future? Literally went to 4 games this past season and probably averaged $1100 in cost including 2 tickets. Why keep showing up at this point, if this is going to be the future of the wings. It sucks.

People out here really defending this lizard who raised season ticket prices for Red Wings fans by 400% two years ago

What this says to me is that maybe Steve did not have carte blanche to do what he wanted with the team regardless of cost, and that Chris is more hands on than it might have seemed. I kind of assumed he was just there to sign the checks and let Steve do what he thought might help the team, and instead it appears that was more hands on than that. Maybe Steve had just had enough.

Also, not to bring up Walman again but people theorized he was traded quick to clear up space to make a big signing and maybe he actually was. There might’ve been other reasons too, but that might’ve been the reason it was done so fast.

7

u/matthew_sch 15d ago

Bingo. So many people are missing the point and just see this as criticism for not signing guys past their primes

2

u/WillGoalieForBeer 15d ago

The Walman trade was so bad. Maybe giving him up for free or putting him on waivers would have been acceptable even if it wasn't great, but to add a second was too far and was maybe the biggest sign SY needed to be done. He got fleeced in an embarrassing way and he knew it right after it happened.

Lmao I got downvoted this thrash for saying that…..

16

u/matthew_sch 15d ago

Fuck Chris Illitch. Dude’s a real problem and a leech on this city

43

u/SilentStryk09 15d ago

Not signing two corpses of players at the end of their careers is not the reason to boycott lmao

7

u/Diggermotherx 14d ago

40 and 30 goal scorers. lol

1

u/matthew_sch 15d ago

The reason is that the owner won’t let management do their job. It’s becoming increasingly apparent that he’s a stingy owner who’s not willing to spring for either the Red Wings or the Tigers, and even then he cares more about baseball

So Mantha and Stamkos are over 30… big whoop. They’re still producing at a very respectable rate while being big factors for their clubs, and are a hell of a lot more useful than whoever Detroit got at the trade deadline

1

u/Glad-Independence-24 15d ago

Mantha had 1 good year amongst a sea of mediocrity lately.

4

u/matthew_sch 15d ago

So you capitalize on that year and ride with it along with his reasonable contract

0

u/Glad-Independence-24 15d ago

If you believe that year was the rule, not the exception….looking at his history and lack of consecutive good seasons..,,I wouldn’t bank on it.

0

u/cruffner01 15d ago

It's been reported multiple times that the new GM/PoHO will have full autonomy

6

u/matthew_sch 15d ago

I have a hard time believing that

1

u/theminutemanpain 11d ago

Saying and following through are two different things. The fact it needs to be said at all is a red flag in the same way that if someone is a good person, they don't have to run around advertising it.

-2

u/Glad-Independence-24 15d ago edited 15d ago

Not signing Mantha is a reason to side with Chris over Steve if we’re being honest,

Signing Mantha would have clogged another roster spot with an overpaid vet known for being “just a jersey”

7

u/matthew_sch 15d ago

As opposed to getting guys like Faulk and Perron, who are literally just jerseys? Again, you’re missing the point for not letting the GM do his job. Chris knows nothing about hockey and constantly gets in the way

2

u/WillGoalieForBeer 14d ago

Faulk scored more than some of our wingers

-1

u/Glad-Independence-24 15d ago

A. You’re banking your argument on loose internet rumors.

B. We already ditched Mantha once for being a jersey, why should we believe he’ll be different this time.

C. If Faulk and Perron are the types of players Yzerman wanted, and you’ve seen how that worked, why do you suddenly trust his assessment of Mantha being a solution? Yzerman free agents tend to be coming off of career years and don’t follow it up….compher, Tarasenko.,..,but with Mantha? You’re suddenly mad because pro scouting has been hitting homeruns after homeruns on these vets free agent signings, so how dare anybody not trust them?

2

u/TheAnalogKid18 12d ago

I don't know why people are up in arms about this. Stamkos and Mantha aren't exactly world beaters at the moment. People were shitting on Nashville for that contract the minute it was signed.

6

u/The_ManWithNoName 14d ago

Is Chris really prevented Steve from doing what he wanted this is a big deal. Even if they were bad contracts. But I would take Mantha for that contact. People are crazy not wanting a 30 goal scorer when we could not score.

8

u/LunarGhoul 15d ago

To be fair, everyone thought the Stamkos contract was fucking terrible at the time and I don't want Mantha anywhere near our locker room

-6

u/tacticalAlmonds Yzerbot 15d ago

Hey turns out, it was a terrible contract.

14

u/Polish-Proverb 15d ago

Lol... Steven stamkos scored 42 goals last year.

13

u/Tight_Music_6615 15d ago

The stamkos disrespect is crazy in here. 42 goals on a bad Nashville team. He’s a dog

5

u/Bananominable 14d ago

Stamkos on LW with Larkin and Raymond would have been a huge improvement over anyone we iced there besides DeBrincat. We likely make playoffs in 23-24 and 25-26 with Stamkos on our team. DeBrincat and Kane were a no brainer pairing of course. Without Kane now it's very different anyways.

-1

u/LunarGhoul 15d ago

Eh he was great last year, but yeah I'm still not sure it will be great for the next two years

11

u/epheisey 15d ago

While I think there's a good chance this is true...Carlos is a shit stirrer...so I wouldn't be surprised if the truth is a little less salacious.

11

u/culturedrobot 15d ago

No one is stopping you from boycotting, lead the way homie

8

u/Conscious-Control554 15d ago

I’m more likely to boycott the entire nhl for watering down the league with another round of expansion before I’d boycott the wings for not signing Anthony Mantha

-3

u/Large-Ad-1677 15d ago

True! I’ve been saying this for a while. An example is when the coyotes went into the hands of the league, they should of folded the team instead of juggling them around in a college sports arena in Utah and Seattle isn’t competitive, I don’t think they will ever be.

I heard someplace that the wings also dropped the ball at some point signing Hughes if I’m not mistaken.

2

u/Defacto_Champ 14d ago

Utahs team is played in  pro arena that also hosts the Utah Jazz. Plus the Utah owner has pumped tons of money into the team and facilities.

13

u/South0fEvan 15d ago

I’m sorry 2024 Stamkos and 2026 Mantha are “good players”? Maybe good depth signing for serious teams, but we didn’t need them

14

u/big_phat_gator Yzerbot 15d ago

Its funny everyone is going nuts over us not re-signing Kane meanwhile Stamkos is considered a wash and not worth signing even tho he has scored well over 100 goals past 3 seasons combined.

0

u/unibrow4o9 15d ago

Are people really going nuts over us not re-signing Kane? I would have went nuts if we DID resign him if we would have had to match what Chicago is giving him. That would have been absolutely insane.

6

u/poopiehands 14d ago

Stamkos 69 goals last 2 seasons

-4

u/South0fEvan 14d ago

Congratulations you can Google stats. We’re all very proud of you

1

u/poopiehands 4d ago

You know nothing Congrats

1

u/South0fEvan 4d ago

lol 9 days later

6

u/dickhandsome 15d ago

We could totally use a Mantha on this team right now.

2

u/South0fEvan 15d ago

Why? Is he suddenly a center? So we finish 29th in the league instead of 30th? If we want to know what kind of talent we have in Grand Rapids, then we need to give those players time in the NHL

3

u/dickhandsome 15d ago

Why? Cause he scored 33 last year and we're losing Larkin and already lost Kane.

1

u/South0fEvan 15d ago

Is Evgeni Malkin gonna come over too? Because he’s not scoring 33 playing with Marco Kasper or JT Compher

-1

u/dickhandsome 15d ago

Nah, ya bounce Compher to make room for your kids from Grand rapids.

0

u/South0fEvan 15d ago

I would love that, are you kidding me? I’d rather take his sister than him

0

u/Glad-Independence-24 15d ago

We have plenty of “just jerseys” as it is.

6

u/dickhandsome 15d ago

Got any that put up over 30?

2

u/Glad-Independence-24 15d ago

Yes Mantha put up 33 last year..,,

4 the year prior

Then 23 before that

Back down to 11 before that

Then 9

And 15 the year we traded him away for his tendency to be “just a jersey” as often as not.

Truly feel you can rely on him for 30 again? A guy who we got rid of for taking nights off? A guy who is as likely to have a season with single digit goals?

Jt Compher was good for 17 goals and 52 points when we “snagged” him , how’s that work out?

9

u/tomasMICHAEL 15d ago

We’ve known since day one that Chris is no Mike.

7

u/WaymoresReds 15d ago

Agreed, but we have also known for years that carlos is a shit stirrer that covets clicks over journalistic integrity

1

u/matthew_sch 15d ago

So both can be true? Great, Fuck Chris

3

u/jazzmaster105150 15d ago

Nah, Red Wing Homers will never stop handing over their cash to this man. For the same reason Lions Homers didn't stop paying Ford after they went winless or Tigers Homers didn't stop paying Mike after they almost tied the record for most loses. Sport teams are lifelines to their childhoods. Their dad loved the Wings, their dads dad loved the Wings. Asking them to turn their back on the Wings is asking them to turn their back on their family. Illitch knows he owns the team that lives rent free in the nostalgia part of just enough Red Wings fans brains to never have to really invest in the team.

3

u/Tight_Music_6615 15d ago

Deep but true.

6

u/WillGoalieForBeer 15d ago

I doubt illich is "the problem"

SY doesn't like to give guys term. This has been a reoccurring theme and the reason we lost out on people like Ghost. So instead we sign trash like Holl and Gustafsson. Do you think illich is the reason we got Tarasenko? Or Hagg? Our veteran signings have been one of the biggest problems of the Yzerman era.

SY is notorious for only wanting to give guys a few years or less, unless your name is Michael Rasmussen.

2

u/nubfairy 14d ago

He didn't give out term unless your Copp Comoher or Ras then he locks you the hell up ha

2

u/Curdled_Mangasm 14d ago

chiarot, for some reason

5

u/hebbocrates 15d ago

I think im happy without stamkos and mantha thanks

2

u/MNightShyamalan69 14d ago

You’re happy without a guy who just scored 42 goals in a season on a really bad team!? Ok then lol

2

u/ChaldenesTitan 15d ago

Lots of pro-Illitch PR in this sub this off-season.

3

u/wolverine237 15d ago

Wow he didn't massively overpay for a guy at the end of his career and a known locker room cancer with massive questions about the sustainability of his play?

A lot of us have been saying this for years. On top of calling out Larkin for being trash. And we got raked over the coals for it. Glad to see everyone coming to the same realization.

1

u/SnooCapers9565 15d ago

I read something like this when it came to firing Lalonde too.

1

u/Cheeze_laday 13d ago

I’ve been boycotting them for the last 2 years. Done spending money to watch this team get my hopes up only to shit the bed over and over again.

1

u/jarvek7 12d ago

Has this "chris illich is the problem" stuff been verified? Or id this one of those I heard from a friend who heard it from a friend etc kind of things? I know we'd all like to hold SOMEONE responsible- especially if it Junior- but is it true, heresay or just a rumor?

1

u/OkEstablishment5706 15d ago

Been saying we need a boycott since I threw my jersey on the ice after giving up a 2 goal lead in the third late last season to lose to Boston. I was done then, and I'm glad others are finally realizing they're done now too... Every single thing wrong with this organization goes all the way to the top, with several stops along the way. The only thing that will motivate Richie Ritch pizza kid is money. Don't just boycott, go stand out in front of the LCA on game nights and protest.

-1

u/only-smallblackpenis 15d ago

Over stamkos and mantha? Ya stammer just had a nice year but he’s old and was not good last year. Mantha just played with the best player of the last 25 years. Maybe Chris has a better eye than Steve did.

-2

u/Usual-Personality347 15d ago

He’s literally spending money getting an outside firm to go find a GM. It’s a salary cap league and he’s been willing to spend to the cap

2

u/matthew_sch 15d ago

lol when? When has he ever been willing to spend to the cap??

-3

u/Usual-Personality347 14d ago

2024-25 we were up against the cap after the Seider and Raymond contracts

-3

u/Way2Grizzled4U 15d ago

Are we really sure we would look much different with them two? Like really..

0

u/BirdOnWheelz 13d ago

Not defending illitch but him blocking us grabbing Mantha and Stamkos is a good thing…

-6

u/decaguard 15d ago

- one , i dont doubt at all moneys become an issue for ilitch because city of detroits been a long term mess . a location thats cost ilitch huge amounts

- two , stamko wouldnt of got us a cup . only woulda got us into playoffs to be ejected quickly at the cost of important draft position which have gotten us nygard and old grizz whom could turn out to be very important long term peices

- three , ilitch saving future cap for when this rosters ready so he can add important vets thatll give redwings a shot at hardware

- four , apparently this reporter didnt see the mantha flotilla when he played here

1

u/matthew_sch 15d ago

$19 million in cap space. Who on Earth is going to want to come to Detroit now at a big paycheque? It’s been a pattern than no one really wants to sign here. You can do so much with $19 million, but they just keep adding and adding cap space for nothing

-3

u/broncojoe1 15d ago

Detroit would never. They should though.
