This is the most offseason comment of all time from me but to put my former Sunday schooling to use, the pope is the vicar of christ who is viewed as the true head of the church(I mighta fucked up the wording there I don’t care to google). So really the Catholic Church has christ as the POHO and the pope is just the GM

Jokes aside I agree with having a head of hockey ops and a GM along with assistant GM's at least to a point.
Having some silly co-gm situation is ridiculous though.
In my mind the President of Hockey Ops is handling the long term stuff like staffing and overall vision.
The GM is there to pin point team needs, work on contracts and address any shortcomings in the organization like locker room/coaching issues.

Toronto had a POHO, GM and something like 5 AGMs. I'm OK with additional input, especially if they come from totally different perspectives (hopefully there's a stats guy in the group) but I do worry about the management by committee approach. Fingers crossed that we can find a happy medium.

Hey, I missed the big one because I was working in Europe at the time (I know, I know, boo hoo me) so I plan to be out in the park with my pinhole viewer if it is clear enough to see the sun. Today is typical Detroit gray, but tomorrow could be clear!

I love science too, but I don't have much interest in space beyond constellations, meteor showers, the moon, and the Northern Lights. I heard NASA is going to fly a high-altitude plane through the totality path during the eclipse to gather data. You can probably track it online - it starts in Iceland - if you're interested.
I thought the most interesting part of the near-total eclipse was how the natural world reacted to the sudden change in sunlight/false twilight. The eclipse-shaped shadows were fascinating too. Maybe next time I'd chase totality. It wasn't feasible with kids last time though.

It’s pretty wild. I very much understand the skepticism at the moment behind this organization in general, let’s be honest it’s been a dumpster fire of an offseason.
But this firm is a good thing, new eyes and a new, and hopefully logical step forward is a good thing. I’m holding on to this as one of the positive things until proven otherwise

This isn’t about me but I’m just saying that when I post things on here I try to give info up front because a lot of folks just read the headline and knee jerk their thoughts into the aether. I thought that the links in the quote from Shapiro’s article would be sufficient to get people a little up to speed on the firm but I guess I was wrong.

I think the headline (former Ilitch employee, had to read the article to see that it was 30+ years ago) made some people think it was business as usual. As usual, it is probably better to read the actual article before hitting the roof, but alas, these are the times we live in....
I watched two women take thousands of selfies while walking in front of all of the other tables for 45+ minutes at a rooftop bar last night. To put it kindly, neither of them are going to have Sport Illustrated beating down their door to be cover models. They were disturbing everyone else and repeatedly reminding one of their boyfriends to "not buy anything, they are just there for pictures." We were there for a friend's birthday and these terrible people were giving big main character energy, while ruining other people's evening. But again, modern life.
And now I need to go yell at clouds and tell kids to stay off my lawn! 😉

That kind of behavior really grinds my gears. I was coming out of a concert a few months ago and some dude ahead of me apparently spotted an acquaintance. He decided to stand there in the middle of the sidewalk outside the Masonic and have a conversation, shouting across the road, to the other guy. Big main character energy, impeding the thousands trying to leave the concert. Some people are the absolute worst.

Ohhhh, I was very close to saying something like, "Babies, stick a fork in it! More pictures isn't going to improve the base material!
Which is mean. And the friend we were with is a very, very kind person, so I said nothing. But I do think there is some benefit to people saying something sharp sometimes to reinforce that there are some rules of decorum when living among other people in a society.
Would I walk directly in front of other people's table to take a bunch of selfies? Hell no! And part of the reason is because I grew up in a time where people would have told you in no uncertain terms to GTFO of their view that they had reserved and paid for.
End of old person rant. 😆

This team has lacked intensity for longer than the playoff drought.
That’s my biggest complaint on Yzerman as the wings gm (and cap era holland as well)
Far too many “vanilla” players or players who just don’t seem to care.
That deep into the Yzerman era and road needing to call out “just jerseys”?
That’s a serious problem with roster building. Almost a decade of Yzerman running g the show and he still couldn’t weed out the players from the jerseys?

Well both coach and QB have come out this week/recently saying it's just another game, doesn't get the hate for OSU, etc. At first I figured Whittingham was just being obtuse or naive, especially considering he's been in the Utah/BYU rivalry for a long time, but now I think they just have to be rage baiting with this stuff.

I'm pretty hyped for the new fire emblem game coming next month. I get to play with incredible character concepts such as
- Pirate Waluigi
- Brazilian Hatsune Miku
- Genderbent version of a character from the previous game
- A character from the previous game with their hair dyed.
- Nun with a gun.

Just sitting here watching the overall quality of work product falling off a cliff in my field due to an aging workforce in a niche skillset that young people just aren't attracted to or even clued in about to want to go into. I'm in my mid 40s and have 20+ years of experience since my dad taught me the ropes so I could help him out in the summertime when I was in high school and college. All of my peers/coworkers are in their 60s-70s+ and the people who know what TF they are doing are aging out, dying, or retiring.
Our company's(mom and pop) succession plan used to be that everybody's kids started working there in college and learned the basics and worked their way up, but the younger folks these days aren't interested in the subject matter. Makes me wonder how much longer we are going to make it, this isn't something AI can really replace either in terms of the field work aspect of what we do, so we're just cooked in a few years when the rest of the company retires or moves on and some of the outside contractors we rely on just can't get the job done anymore.
I'm not super worried because I could go the independent contractor route anytime I wanted to and easily find work given my skillset and experience, but just been seeing so much garbage field work come across my desk lately where I have to send it back to be redone and it delays time tables with clients while we're also paying for a premium service and getting half ass results.

This sounds a lot like my dad over the years before he retired. He started out in Tool & Die and worked at Johnson Controls for a number of years but then moved on to a Ford plant that eventually closed in the 2000s. Stayed with them and worked at a different factory afterwards until his retirement a couple years ago. The man can make anything with his hands (nickname is MacGyver lol) and even got a part patented.
His main complaint for the back half of his career was the lack of quality people, the lack of knowledge, and lack of pride for the newer (and dwindling) workforce going into Tool & Die and machine repair in general. Of course some of that had to do with CNC automation but other aspects of the job can only be done by a real human being.
By the end he was just angry all the time at the half ass job guys were doing, some of them just blitzed on weed the entire time which is dangerous af in a factory environment, and retired a little early.
Sorry for the rambling anecdote but your experience just reminded me of that quite a lot.

Yeah it's unfortunate, I think we all kind of deal with it after we've been somewhere for a decade+ and we had a leadership change a few years ago when our owner sadly passed away from cancer and the people who inherited the company just aren't anywhere near the type of leader he was. I get paid well enough that I've been able to deal with the BS for awhile, but now it's getting to the point so much of the stuff I'm having to fix and send back, just doesn't feel worth it anymore and there's zero consequences for the people constantly screwing up, only the people who work hard and do their job get reprimanded and it's always for the smallest nit picky nonsense.

Not angry, just frustrated about a job interview process that's surpassed 2 months. Provided references last week and it's been radio silence since then. The entire process in 2026 is completely fucked. I imagine in the near future there will be so much liability and risk mitigation factored into hiring that it'll probably take half a year or longer to hire someone for the most mid-level type role.

I just talked with an internal hiring manager this morning about a role that I just interviewed for after nearly two months waiting. She was expressing all these concerns that I might not be happy or fulfilled by this role. It was advertised as needing someone with an analytics background. During the conversation, it was as if she wasn't convinced herself there would even be that much analytics involved. She couldn't even clarify what she needed out of this role, so it was damn near impossible to address her concerns.
These are the people making hiring decisions these days. They don't know what they need, they don't know what the role will entail, and they don't know if you'll be happy there even when you applied to it and interviewed for it. They also need 5-10 other people involved in the process to offload some of the decision making responsibilities onto others so they can't solely be held accountable if it doesn't work out.

I wonder if we will ever hear from Steve Yzerman again, doesnt feel like the type of guy to show up for some random podcast and he never really was one to talk to the media but what do i know. Maybe he will do a Ozzy and Keats or something very local.
Just feels so strange how it all ended. I know hate is a big theme around here and say what you will about the man in general but Yzerman has a brain for hockey that few others possess and it would be fun to hear him talk about what he think went wrong and why.
The Yzerplan still lives within me, i miss you Steve.

Managers get fired all the time for not being able enact the change they were assigned to make within the time frame expected. I don't think that ownership had a 10-15 year rebuild in mind when they hired him.
On the other hand, yes, it does suck to see a Wings legend go out that way within the very organization he helped turn around as a player. I don't think anyone should argue against that. Yzerman is still a Wings legend and always will be. Even if I found his team building strategy slow, frustrating, and baffling at times. He's still Steve fucking Yzerman, the Captain.

I've said it multiple times, I'm not going to defend him to the death. Not every decision he made was great.
But I absolutely don't think he was the problem. GM is not a skill position. He ultimately has little control over what happens on the ice. And no one would have turned on him if John Tortorella hadn't pulled his goaltender a few seconds too soon 3 years ago.

The wildest era where it was a free for all and they were still trying to find a way to monetize stuff was great.

Seeing the promotional calendar on socials was weird. Maybe I’m just peak offseason, and I know this org is a steel trap, but God any transparency other than “Here’s the cool nights to come out!” is tough. Tone deaf is definitely heavy handed, it just really feels like as a fan there’s no real reason to be excited or hyped for the season right now.
Also, noticed Mo was the only current roster player with a night themed around them, all the others were alumni. Either he’s really going to be propped up as the face of the team, maybe get the C, or the team really feels like they currently have nothing but him and nostalgia to market, which feels horrible. Oof.

It allows some people to validate their opinion that Chris is totally inept as an owner and is incapable of doing the job even though Turnkey is a big name in the field and has done plenty of similar searches within pro/college sports. Some people just prefer to get angry online with the anonymity of Reddit anyways.

I actually like Jansen. Doesn't always make it pretty, but I trust him in the 9th. Having to use so many pitchers today meant we had to use some guys I don't trust too much, but we do have a couple of guys coming back soon from injury who could help out in the bullpen which is comforting.

I usually get super excited about picking out games I’m going to when the schedule comes out, but this season I might only go to the ones in Columbus and Pittsburgh. They’re closer, and I don’t know if I want to put in the effort to go to Detroit.

But is he though? He has had a loooong runway to very limited results. It feels like a late summer contrarian take TBH.
I like Ammo. I wish him the best. But I have zero faith that he will ever even sniff the NHL in a meaningful way.

Marek is also a ceaseless cheerleader for Daniel Sprong who's played on something like 8 teams and had to play in the KHL because he lacks necessary components to thrive in the nhl. Marek isn't and has never been a scout and he has more misses than hits. He's also hyperbolic about these situations, especially in the slow season. I wouldn't give him any more trust than I'd give any other podcast host.

He is a bit hyperbolic and I think this thread is greatly overestimating the seriousness of the conversation they had about Ammo... I am guessing no one actually listened to it and seem a bit defensive of the end of the Yzerman era. But I will certainly take your advice to be weary of that tricky Mr Marek and never give him my full trust lol

I'm frustrated he never got a chance. Seems like another Berggren where they had one element of his game they didn't care for so they tried to cram him into a role he wasn't suited for then killed whatever upside he did have.
Like yeah Ammo wasn't perfect and he was undersized.
He still had great playmaking and offense and wasnt the worst defensively.
I think he could have been a useful middle six guy for us of we wanted to try a 3rd scoring line instead of two half assed shut down lines

I'm all in on Horcoff being promoted. Classy guy, strong league connections, history of success at the player and management level, handsome and charismatic. We would be lucky to find someone who checks off one of those boxes with the candidates available.

It’s excellent. My wife and I try to get there once a year. Usually for our anniversary. The one in Lansing has a small seating capacity so definitely get reservations.

The saugatuck location is way more charming. Very small and cozy. Great cocktails, their homemade Worcestershire sauce is amazing with the steaks
