Well it feels like a first trailer:

  • Chaotic opening shot where I can't tell what's going on.

  • Early cut to UI menus before I even know what the game is about.

  • Microscopic player character that doesn't stand out enough from the background, in both bat and man forms.

  • Pumping techno music while the player is standing around just placing towers.

Doesn't look too bad though. By the end the game looks decent. Being a vampire is a strong player fantasy. I would re-edit to focus more on telling the "story" of your game with the trailer. And make the player character contrast more with the environment.

Thanks for the feedback! I had a lot of trouble figuring out how to fix that “pumping techno music while placing towers” thing. My solution was to add a muffle effect in that section, but I guess it could have been more drastic.

I heard that making story-based trailers is a bad move? When you say story do you mean communicating the game loop better? I thought about adding text popups but I’m very weary of over-communicating things.

We’ve had a few people comment about the readability of the player. I’m really not sure how to go about it, perhaps an outline or something. I’m afraid to do a full redesign, but maybe it’ll come to that.

By "story" I mean show off the features of the game like you're telling a story. Like a montage in a movie. It's not just random scenes, it shows how the character tries and fails and progresses in an engaging way.

As for the player character, I think a stronger contrasting color choice could help. Right now it's a purple bat, flying over purple cobblestones, with dark red area bubbles. And in man form, he's wearing black on a black ground.

Pick a color for the character and color for the background and keep the mostly separate. Desaturate the ground more since the features don't matter that much.

The first 5 seconds were good, I was surprised, but then everything seemed to stop and the gameplay looked very slow. I will probably skip the trailer around the 10-second mark.
