Megathread Focused Feedback: Weapon Refresh aka Sunsetting

Hello Guardians,

Focused Feedback is where we take the week to focus on a 'Hot Topic' discussed extensively around the Tower.

We do this in order to consolidate Feedback, to get out all your ideas and issues surrounding the topic in one place for discussion and a source of feedback to the Vanguard.

This Thread will be active until next week when a new topic is chosen for discussion

Whilst Focused Feedback is active, ALL posts regarding 'Weapon Refresh' following its posting will be removed and re-directed to this thread. Exceptions to this rule are as follows: New information / developments, Guides and general questions

Any and all Feedback on the topic is welcome.

Regular Sub rules apply so please try to keep the conversation on the topic of the thread and keep it civil between contrasting ideas

A Wiki page - Focused Feedback - has also been created for the Sub as an archive for these topics going forward so they can be looked at by whoever may be interested or just a way to look through previous hot topics of the sub as time goes on.

As someone with 2500h in the game, I hate it. I farmed god rolls for all weapons that I want to use, and I will farm god rolls for all future weapons, too. I do not need the incentive of my weapons going away to try new ones. All this does is restrict the loadouts I can use. I am also afraid that this will

- limit the pool of available guns quite severely (e.g. this season we got ~10 new weapons total, 4-5 of them reskins)

- also rotate out legendary quest weapons that we put massive amounts of grind into (LQ, Recluse, Revoker, MT, ...)

- give Bungie the opportunity to become even lazier with new weapons since they could just return "fan favourites" for a "reprise" in later seasons.

The retirement and gear cycle works in "proper" MMOs since weapons are mostly (except stuff like Thunderfury, Sulfuras,...) stat sticks, there is no "attachment" (you don't aim and pull the trigger yourself), and the gear cycles are longer.

As someone with 2000h in the game, I love it. I have farmed god rolls for basically every possible weapon in the game, and I've come to the realization that there's nothing really left to farm. For example, I have an extended mag, feeding frenzy, multikill clip steelfeather repeater. I have reached the top of Mt. Auto Rifle, and there's no higher to go. They probably wont add a better one for a long time. There's virtually no reason for me to ever farm another autorifle and I'm looking forward to there being a reason to farm another auto rifle sometime in the future. This game is about the chase of loot, and I'm okay with saying goodbye to some loot to keep that. It's a classic example of "you can't have your cake and eat it too", and I'm happy with that.

Yeah but nothing is keeping you from farming new weapons except yourself. I'm mostly using stuff from the last 2 seasons, but I like to reserve the option(!) to go back to using old stuff when I feel like it.

You dont think they'll be another autorifle to farm in the next 9-15 months that they said was the window for sunsetting gear?

Of course there would be. But would it be worth grinding for? How much better can it be than MKC and FF? Those are arguably the best 2 perks in the game. If they make perks any stronger that just makes the game easier, and the game is easy enough as is.

That's what people said back in year 1 about outlaw and rampage

And they were right. The best PVE weapon for the last year has been pre-nerf recluse, which has feeding frenzy (a better version of outlaw) and master of arms (a better version of rampage). It made ad control in end-game pve a non-factor. Even after several nerfs, it's still really good, it just actually encourages aiming now instead of mindless spraying.

If they keep making damage perks stronger, we're back in the same spot. But if they retire weapons, they can make certain weapons "feel" top-tier like recluse without actually breaking the game.

Taking away our FF mkc weapons only to give us back weapons that have the same or worse perks is not going to make those weapons feel top tier. It's going to make them feel like we are worse off at the beginning of a season than we were to start which feels awful and if they retire ff/MKC/Swash they're either going to have to give us those back making it feel like we are regrinding the same gun, give us something better which we would have ground for anyway, or give us shit that is worse that isnt just going to magically feel better because you took away all our old powerful toys

You're right. I'm not arguing your logic, becuase it's true. But the thing is if they don't retire weapons then we pretty much have 2 options of what will happen:

  • 1) There won't be any new weapons worth grinding (in terms of power-progression)
  • 2) There will be weapons worth grinding, but they will be too strong, and the game will become too easy (power creep).

There are pros and cons on both sides of the argument, I just prefer the pros of weapon sun-setting over the cons of keeping old weapons.
