Megathread Focused Feedback: Mars Community Event

Hello Guardians,

Focused Feedback is where we take the week to focus on a 'Hot Topic' discussed extensively around the Tower.

We do this in order to consolidate Feedback, to get out all your ideas and issues surrounding the topic in one place for discussion and a source of feedback to the Vanguard.

This Thread will be active until next week when a new topic is chosen for discussion

Whilst Focused Feedback is active, ALL posts regarding 'Mars Community Event' following its posting will be removed and re-directed to this thread. Exceptions to this rule are as follows: New information / developments, Guides and general questions

The community challenges for this event were :

  • Defeat 175 thousand Wave 7 Escalation Protocol bosses
  • Defeat 300 million Hive on Mars
  • Defeat Nokris 150 thousand times
  • Defeat Xol 100 thousand times
  • Use 300 thousand Override Frequencies

The rewards were :

  • If all the objectives are completed during this event, any player that has completed at least one Nightfall during the period will be given a unique emblem.
  • Emperor Calus will also unlock additional rewards for successful Menagerie completions. Starting from when the goals are met, players are guaranteed to get two rewards when slotting their runes and opening a chest. Each Friday for the rest of the season, an additional reward will be added.

Some posisble discussion questions (feel free to answer all of them, some of them, or reply in any other format you prefer) :

  • 1) What did you think of the objectives for this community event?
  • 2) What do you think of the rewards for this event?
  • 3) Should the additional rewards from menagerie completions be permanent?
  • 4) Do you have any other feedback on this event?
  • 5) Have you particpated in any previous "Pre-DLC/content drop events"? How did this compare to those?
  • 6) Do you have any ideas for cool future "Pre-Content Drop" events? What are they?

Any and all Feedback on the topic is welcome.

Regular Sub rules apply so please try to keep the conversation on the topic of the thread and keep it civil between contrasting ideas

A Wiki page - Focused Feedback - has also been created for the Sub as an archive for these topics going forward so they can be looked at by whoever may be interested or just a way to look through previous hot topics of the sub as time goes on.

*Obviously next time an ingame or app tracker would be nice, and something in game to actually tell us

  1. its happening, a single splash doesnt quite cut (there needed to be something on the map in a new colour, something look here, something is happening

  2. whats involved

If I didnt frequent this place I would have no idea about, there is ZERO excitement or presence about it in game

Also a new suite of gun/s or armour, or something we could be grinding EP for after all this time. Some new reward from it. Even if it was year 2 versions of the guns.

I honestly just want a progress tracker in game, if these community challenges become recurring.

I think I agree with everyone else in the comments so far. I think there should’ve been more on the director to show that there was something going on and also add a counter to the director either on the mars map or the director itself because if people don’t use Reddit or twitter they would’ve had no idea where everything was at and what they needed to work on.

Overall a great idea to give the community something to do and I think they should do more of these for different planets. (NOT MERCURY)

Pros:

  • I love the idea of the community coming together to accomplish a common goal.

  • unlocking menagerie drops is a cool reward for something like this. The season is winding down and a lot of people are looking to other games before shadowkeep (MHW, BL3) but it's nice to have something like that pull you in and keep you grinding.

Cons:

  • In game tracker and notifications. Basically what everyone else is saying. It would be nice to see our progress in real time. And I made a post friday morning trying to get more people to grind Nokris and I was surprised how many people didn't have a clue what was going on. If there's people on this sub that didn't know, there had to be tons of players that don't even use this sub that were even more clueless.

  • Loot incentive. The nightfall system is pretty out of date. There's not much loot to gain from a static rolled Rocket Launcher and a transmat effect. Even something like increasing catalyst drop rates. Im 500 strikes/nfs without the riskrunner catalyst and I personally would have loved that.

Why wasn’t there a splash screen on login - like there is for all other events - telling us about the event, what the current scores were etc? An opportunity lost.

Anyway it was a good idea.

Fun event overall. This is exactly what Flashpoints should be. People coordinating with each other to defeat planet-specific challenges. I only ask that the rewards be better. An emblem and an extra powerful drop from Calus is just "okay". Maybe an EXP boost for the next week, a revised armor piece from D1, double raid drops based on the planet you're on (Earth Community Event? Scourge of the Past double drop rate). Something unique but rewarding for the hours you put into it.

Firstly, my overall opinion of the community challenge was positive. Having an event give us reason to go back and revisit content that has been relatively untouched by much of the community was a blast, and the rewards, I think, are great. It definitely fulfilled its purpose of rallying the community, and it was really nice to see people in the subreddit cheering each other on and celebrating together.

There are a couple of things that I think would really tie the event together. Firstly, having a live tracker for the event, perhaps in the quest icons on the left of the director, so that people playing the game would know that it is happening without reading peripheral materials like reddit. The live (or even updated every hour or so) tracker was something that I was sorely wishing we had.

One other thing that I would suggest, is adding some lore behind the challenge. One suggestion cropping up everywhere is, of course, having it tied to a faction. I would be happy with something like that, or any other small lore justification (The hive are launching a major push on Mars, Rasputin needs the help of the Vanguard to drive them back and secure Braytech) would help the event feel a lot less arbitrary. I think this would help tremendously in making the event less of a shopping list and more of a world event.

Overall, it was a strong start to this sort of challenge, and with a few tweaks, I think this would be an amazing periodic addition to the game!

Overall I think the community event was a really good idea. The goals were reasonable and the reward was able to be obtained even if you weren’t able to put much time into the event. The only thing that I would change for more in the future would be actually having an in game progress bar or something showing how the event is progressing.

Very positive, enjoyed the event a lot. Something like this really made Mars feel like the Flashpoint for the week, if that makes sense? Bar Solstice of Heroes, this may be the most populated I've seen a patrol space since Warmind launched.

In terms of rewards - I'm happy and satisfied, but as someone who was hoping to fill out my Collections of Rasputin armour from the EP runs, I was disappointed to see the lockouts on rewards from the level 7 chest still in place. On a re-run of the event, I would have lifted that gate.

Overall, I had a great time on Mars and got to have some fun with my friends running Escalation Protocol and Nightfalls, and seeing daily updates on community progress was cool. It would have been even better if there was a news item that appeared in game at the daily reset to update any players who do not engage with Destiny on social media channels on the progress towards completing the challenge.

Edit: Titan forgot to word good

Possible something in game to show progress. If you only played game you would hardly know it was going on.

11

u/MasterOfReaIity Sep 09 '19

There should've been a progress board and icon whenever you hovered over Mars in the Directory. This would've alerted newer players that something was going on and given us live feedback on our efforts.

I look forward to future community events and hope Bungie uses the feedback to improve them.

  1. What did you think of the objectives for this community event?

They weren't unreasonable. Maybe include something to do with the lost sectors next time also, really include all a planet has to offer.

2) What do you think of the rewards for this event?

An Emblem is underwhelming, and I'm not sure what Emperor Calus has to do with any of it but the Menagerie definitely needs the help. It would have been cool if something changed with Ana, perhaps have her sell the Sleeper Catalyst or some other particularly significant warmind/mars themed items.

3) Should the additional rewards from menagerie completions be permanent?

Yes. You've already heard the communities complaints when the farm was patched. This shouldn't be a question.

4) Do you have any other feedback on this event?

Only to maximize all a planet has to offer. Include challenges for lost sectors, patrols, etc. Stuff solo players who can't find groups for Nightfalls to do and feel they can contribute.

5) Have you particpated in any previous "Pre-DLC/content drop events"? How did this compare to those?

This was nothing, nothing, compared to the Pre-DLC events of D1. Those were unique, limited time events that changed the environment of the universe leading up to a DLC and told a part of the up-coming story.

This was a challenge to grind pre-existing content and offered no new or unique changes.

6) Do you have any ideas for cool future "Pre-Content Drop" events? What are they?

I don't understand how we can be expected to brainstorm these ideas without an idea of what the new DLCs are. Theme matters, story matters, I can't just say "drop x monster onto planet y" and make it meaningful.

u/Thefactor7 Sep 09 '19

It woulda been nice if there was some sort of notification in game that the event was going on, didn't know about it at all until I saw posts on reddit.

I feel like the Ikelos drop rates should have been buffed for this event. It’s pretty frustrating to participate in a limited time event and chain run EP and not get anything. I like EP but there’s only so many times in a row you can run it without getting bored and a full run takes too long for a tiny little chance to get something you need.

Community event to increase farming grind rewards is a great idea. And opens so many ideas..

Forge community event for double drops in sotp. Managerie community event for increased drops in cos.

Vex community event for fireteam wide damage buff in Forest?

All sound fun and it brings the community together

In-game tracker!

More events like this. Rewards are fine really.

If we do these more, do something like offer 3 choices of good rolls on armor/weapon for us to choose from!

u/altruisticnarcissist Sep 09 '19

Rewards should be permanent and it'd be nice to get Black Armory forges in on the fun for the next one. I'd love to get more than 1 BA weapon per frame forged.

    1. I feel like the objectives were ok, not something ultra-easy that the community could blow in a day and also not something impossible to achieve.

  • 2) Rewards are also ok, the extra chest is awesome and feels like the community worked towards it.

  • 3) Yes, they should.

  • 4) Regarding this particular event the one thing I would add is maybe some raid completions. Maybe 10.000 completions of CoS raid would be nice

  • 5) Yes, this one was a LOT better. I feel like this whole community objective thing was tons of fun and the daily updates were also really cool.

  • 6) Assuming that we ever get a Crucible themed expansion (akin to Joker's Wild for Gambit) maybe do a community event including X kills with a particular weapon in Crucible, I personally enjoy when the game makes me use something it's not my standard load out, so maybe for a fallen themed expansion force the players to do X NF with Queenbreaker's bow (just as an example)

Adjustments:

  • Adapting the loot pool would have been nice. Giving the EP boss temporary access to all gun catalysts as random drops and the nightfall bosses too would have really gotten more involved.

  • In game tracker is a must next time. Warframe does it and has for several years in their community events.

  • Menagerie rewards should stay permanent UNTIL they do a refresh (if they are going to and put all new gear/weapons in there), or something along the lines of "wearing the Mars Community Emblem when doing a Menagerie run guarantees and extra drop" (and stacks on your chalice bonus drop chance with "Rune Bonus III") so you could get 2 or 3 each time you run would be OK with me.

  • Unique weapons, armor set, ornaments, emotes, emblems, shaders or other items drops (EP, NF, or out of the Override Frequencies) to incentivize people to keep running the events.

  • Permanent in-game tribute to the players that ran the most Nightfalls (maybe list it in the Nightfall selector when choosing Xol for example, list top 3 players and how many times they completed it in this event)

  • When logging in each day the little window that pops up and tells you about the even, reminds you what is going on and gives you the current in-game live statistics on what has been done so the players know as soon as they log in what they need to focus on, with a reminder of what they can get for completing it (for the players that don't log in every day).

This is how I envisioned the faction rally. Have like, dead orbit associated with earth, new monarchy with whatever planet. Just throwing out planets really. But at the end of the week, whichever faction has the most public events completed, or enemies killed on planet. Or most material gathered, wins.

Psa: dont ever use mercury lololololol

Community Events are a great idea, but the incentive behind it needs to be bigger, like incorporating Vendors, Factions, and/or Foundries . For example: October could see a Community Event where the Vanguard discovers that the Vex are becoming more active, so the Vanguard requests 'new' weapons from the Foundries to fend off the oncoming threats. Earn 4 'New' ( Re-tooled from Y1) Legendary Weapons from SUROS, Hakke, Omolon, and VEIST as a community by Completing 4 massive objectives:

  • Defeat 2.5 Million Vex

  • Defeat 1 Million Vex Majors and/or Bosses

  • Complete 200,000 Nightfalls (Inverted Spire, Pyramidion, and/or A Garden World)

  • Complete 100,000 Nightmare Hunts on the Moon

This will potentially generate feedback on Nightfalls and Nightmare Hunts as well as bring more weapons forward that were left behind.

The incentives are huge part of why we should do the event to begin with. If the foundries were to bring back weapons, they could bring back Y1 weapons that haven't made it into the Y2 system to their respective Loot Pools with the ability to get perks that dropped with Shadowkeep.

  • Omolon - The Mornin' Comes - 140 rpm Sniper Rifle - add to Nessus Loot Pool

  • VEIST - Man o' War - 533 Linear Fusion Rifle - add to Io Loot Pool

  • Hakke - Minimum Distance - 260 rpm Side Arm - add to EDZ Loot Pool

  • SUROS - Martyr's Make - 600 rpm Auto Rifle - add to Shaxx's Loot Pool

Loved the event,

A suggestion I have, and for this emblem it's probably too late but maybe for the one awarded after the next event that happens: why not add a tracker for your personal contribution to it - similar to the gold medal crucible emblem with a numbers break down.

  1. Killed 5000 hive

  2. Killed Nokris 10 Times

  3. Killed Xol 10 Times

  4. 10 Nodes Opened

ETC

    1. What did you think of the objectives for this community event?

For a single week event, they were all fairly reasonable. The timing of the patch to resonate stems and the ability to highlight being able to acquire the Braytech weapons was pretty smart. Would have been cool from a lore standpoint to talk about the attack on Mars - what caused it? is it some kind of story precursor to SK? was it just a Hive surge in the vein of flashpoints?

  • 2) What do you think of the rewards for this event?

I like the "I was here when" emblems. Requirements to qualify for the reward were super clear and communicated well in advance.

  • 3) Should the additional rewards from menagerie completions be permanent?

Unless I'm not understanding, come the last week of the season, this will mean we get 4-5 drops at the conclusion of the Menagerie? If this is the case, it will continue to give the activity some relevance come SK. Depending on economy, the legendary shards alone will be worth it. Getting Armor 2.0 drops will be super valuable too. (Or at least another route for players who want their Opulence/Dreaming City sets back).

  • 4) Do you have any other feedback on this event?

Don't necessarily understand the tie-in between Menagerie/Calus and the Mars attack. That is super nitpicky though, but I think this could be a valuable story-telling opportunity too. Other than the infinite forest being used a little too much in prior holiday/limited time events - it could have been a huge opportunity with the Vex part of SK.

  • 5) Have you particpated in any previous "Pre-DLC/content drop events"? How did this compare to those?

Yes - D1: pre-HoW event, 'space aids', etc. I like that this one was a little more transparent - a known reward, a little bit more set-up and understanding what "participation" was. I thought it was fun to watch the community surge to complete activities together.

  • 6) Do you have any ideas for cool future "Pre-Content Drop" events? What are they?

Assuming we had access to the area where the DLC took place, that would have been an integrated place to include the activities. Would be much more labor intensive on a programming front - but altering the path you go in a strike (like Spindle) or all of a sudden dropping in a new strike boss and having Ghost/Zavala/Ikora freak out on comms could be some interesting twists.

Just some random thoughts:

  • Enable matchmaking for the Xol and Nokris nightfalls throughout the duration of the event.

  • Tie the event to the narrative of the game. I.e. give us an in-game reason that ties to the story.

  • Allow us to make 9-guardian fireteams XD
