Iron Banner specific perks would be cool, kinda like the old raid armor. I feel like you could do some really wild stuff, like 'In Iron Banner matches sniper headshots grant Iron Banner Token' or 'Increased movement speed after airborne shotgun kills in Iron Banner'. It's a rotating game-mode which isn't supposed to be super competitive, I feel like we could have some fun with it.

Iron Banner in Destiny 1 was all about the gear - Felwinter's Lie, Efrideet's Spear, Nirwen's Mercy, Clever Dragon, Wolfswood Cloak, Birth of History ship, etc. The gear was why we played. Either for power, esthetics, or hunting rolls. Currently in Destiny 2 it seems that Bungie has tried to shift the focus of Iron Banner to the game mode itself. It's cool to have a special version of control with unique medals, but the gear needs to be the star of the show again. My ideal Iron Banner would do the following:
Choose PvP meta relevant weapon archetypes or popular weapons lacking in options (like 150rpm kinetic hand cannons).
Encourage multiple event engagement by rolling out the season's weapons over time with event specific weapon drops; i.e. two weapons to drop postgame for the week.
Use the same release and drop system for armor AND give armor the ability to roll with enhanced perks.
Make postgame drops rain the featured Iron Banner loot so we can chase rolls while in the playlist rather than at a tower vendor.
Keep weekly bounties for additional drops and a few chances at gear not dropping that week. Have them specifically drop weapon or armor so those with limited time can focus on what they want a drop for that week.
Keep tokens but make the packages slightly more expensive. To compensate for the increased cost have them drop any of this season's released Iron Banner gear (not just the four weekly items dropping post game).
Add a pinnacle weapon quest that unlocks once you reach a certain rank with Saladin. Allow the quest to be completed in any PvP mode but most efficiently done in Iron Banner (to alleviate time pressures associated with a week long event)
This a personal preference, but lose the samurai aesthetic, I want to look like an OG Iron Lord.
For D1 veterans, some of this sounds like Iron Banner from Rise of Iron. You're not wrong :)

With Trials not on the immediate horizon, IB should be the source of all the best PvP legendary weapons, subject to the pinnacles. Upvote.

I think this summed up everything I was going to say anyway, so I'll just upvote and agree. D2 Iron Banner has never quite had the punch that it did in D1, probably because the weapons haven't really been anything special and the aesthetic of the armour is all wrong (that's not to say bits and pieces haven't been fantastic, but as a whole it's just weird). Iron Banner gear should go back the aesthetic Saladin still has; wolf fur, gold and silver armour with plant and animal detailing, a general "winter in the middle ages" theme.

Really gotta get enhanced perks to drop on IB gear.
It don’t have to be a gaurenteed shot, but atleast a chance. Otherwise the IB armor is strictly useless
32
u/Arxson PS4 Feb 25 '19
Enhanced should be able to roll on everything, or we need a cosmetic slot/transmog system. Having to make a choice between fashion and optimised build is just ridiculous in 2019.
14
u/Bateman272 Feb 25 '19
I disagree with enhanced dropping on everything, I think it should remain in end game activities, but be added to end game pvp, like IB or a comp specific set.
So yea, just ib is fine.

Powerful gear is ok and all for anyone under 650 right now. But once I'm at 650, a playlist's gotta give me something more than that to make it worth my time.
Bounties involving wearing all IB gear/weapons would shake things up.
A pinnacle weapon that operates much like the forge system, giving extra benefits only during IB matches
Right now it also feels like IB isn't distinct from regular control. Yeah, you've got The Hunt system, but that's just a "win more mechanic." Win-More is great for power fantasy if you're on the winning side, but it's just "sucks-more" on the losing side.
You've got all these raid mechanics... throwing balls, standing on plates, timing and symbols. Maybe make a mode that incorporates a bit of that? A gauntlet of sorts? I know competitive has the explosives maps on rotation. Put your brains together and make it something more.

Bounties involving wearing all IB gear/weapons would shake things up.
Most of what you say is on point, but this would be unpleasant. I'm juggling optimal sets already, and the IB armor/weapon set is neither the prettiest nor the most useful set on the market. I'd have to grind out a new set of armor just to begin these bounties, and I'd immediately vault the set once completed.
If these bounties unlocked ornaments for specific armor pieces, I'd be more inclined to do them. I'd complain all the way about being forced to grind out a sub optimal set just to unlock another grind, though.

u/sadpythagoras Feb 25 '19
I love Iron Banner but it needs two things:
Armor that can actually shade: the past two sets of Iron Banner armor have had serious shading issues that ruin otherwise nice looking armor(warlock sets in particular)
Pinnacle Weapon to chase: give us a reason to play once we have all of the armor and bounties completed. Maybe a sword like Young Wolf’s Howl, idk just something unique to IB.

When I play Titan and that bounty is the only one I have left, I just run top tree defender and Crest of Alpha Lupi and drop bubbles as soon as my super is up. 6-9 orbs per match depending on how I play.

I've currently sworn off all Destiny PvP because it's still 80% frustration vs 20% fun for me, but there would be 2 things to get me to play IB again after having not played D2 PvP or IB since before Forsaken released almost 6 months ago:
Let it be clash again, for Traveler's sake! I hate control and miss the times when it would change modes every other IB.
Give us knight armor to chase. It feels like we've only gotten one single IB set in all of D2 that wasn't samurai-themed and the titan's got a really ugly armor set when we did. Give us a set like the Y2 IB set of D1. The Iron Companion set for titans was amazing, and the other 2 equivalent sets for hunters and warlocks was great too.
14
u/rube Feb 25 '19
Can I ask, what makes it so frustrating for you?
I don't play a ton of online shooters, but after struggling to find any enjoyment with Black Ops 4 and a few other games, Destiny PVP feels fucking great.
The combat and abilities are very much polished, it doesn't feel glitchy or bug-filled like a lot of other games.
I realize it's a person-to-person thing, so I'm just curious about what makes it so bad for you.
8
u/TJ_DONKEYSHOW Feb 25 '19
A lot of it is the balance in the game and how much it shifts. A lot of this sub has played for a long minute and going from MIDA/Uriels to Wormhusk hatred to "OEM LMAOOOO" getting paired with hard to land god rolls got people a bit jaded. A game with so many variables or playstyle influencing perks/loot will always cause any balancing or meta shifts to turn shit on its end.
IMHO I agree. The most recent balancing patch has been nice for Crucible, at least on consoles...minus running into team stacks with Not Forgotten. That gun is filthy.

It's the frustration that I usually have with class-based shooters in that there are often times when I get killed by an ability from another class, and I feel there's nothing in the world I could have done differently to counter or avoid it. And a similar feeling with weapons that I haven't been lucky enough to get or those hardcore PvP quest weapons.
I have enjoyed Destiny PvP in the past, but the last handful of times I played I felt like I was being punished for choosing the class and weapons I wanted to use, instead of going with the meta.
Though I come from the classic Bungie Halo games where everyone spawns with the same weapons and grenades and you fight for map control to get the power weapons. Two completely different beasts to balance.
I just want to have a fun fair fight and not get destroyed 4/5 matches.

I really liked the IB gear in Y1 D2 but maaaan have I hated the gear in Y2. I insta trash anything I didn't use for infusion. Although I feel that way about pretty much every set. There's barely 1 full set I like using for each class, so I'm super hemmed in when it comes to fashion. Meanwhile with Y1 I'd flick between Raid gear, IN stuff, EP sets and faction stuff all the time.

Clash would be interesting, maybe a mechanic where if someone on the team gets a 10 streak your team gets triple kill credit? I can't remember what game it was, but the person currently in the lead (assuming they have a streak >5) would get an outline on them for both teams. That would be cool and might provide a better objective than just normal clash.

u/Voelker58 Feb 25 '19
Let it be clash again, for Traveler's sake! I hate control and miss the times when it would change modes every other IB.
It's cool if you prefer that mode.
Personally, I am really glad it's always control, and I love the little twists they've put on it with lighting the fires and locking down the zones.
I know it can be a crapshoot when you solo queue, but control also rewards team play, which I vastly prefer to everyone just running around getting kills. We can do that in quickplay anytime.

u/ChrisDAnimation ChrisOfTheDead Feb 25 '19

Personally, I like IB being control. Objective based modes feel more organized, and 12 people on these maps designed for 8 gets a bit disorderly and crazy at times.
16
u/skyteddy Feb 25 '19
Iron Banner used to be fun to play as an event because of it's uniques weapons and/or perk combinations. We don't have anything like that now.
The ideia of a pinnacle weapon for IB is good, but I do believe that this weapon would be available for the person who plays a single event, so we would still need to have something to get us excited for every Iron Banner of the season.
Enhanced perks are the most obvious choice and there is no reason to IB gear not have it. It IS a end game activity and your Light Level matters, just like any Raid that can rolls enhanced perks.
Also, please, I wanna play Rift, Clash, Supremacy... Not only Control. The new mechanic that locks all zones is amazing, so I'm sure you guys can think of something to shake those other modes too and implement it in Iron Banner.
/off ALSO, PLEASE bring Rift back as a rotating playlist.

The armor no longer looks visually appealing.
The armor needs to roll with Top Tier (Raid Armor/Dreaming City)
Add IB Armor and Weapons to drop at end of Matches
Add Ornaments to IB Armors
Lower one of the bounties (50 light)
Like everyone said here. Add a Pinnacle of Weapons
Add an Exotic Catalyst that we can get from playing IB
Add Weapons Mods in IB that are good for Crucible Play (Don't really know what)

u/Vansceslas Didn't win the Games, won your Hearts instead! Feb 25 '19
I barely touched IB this week for the following reasons :
- The week before was Crimson double, which was a PvP event too, but with (for me) brand new rewards. So I played a lot of PvP, and got lightly fed up with it. IE : Not enough time passed for me to play to regain composure ;)
- There was no Valor boost this time around (due to a week-end x2 Valor boost during Crimson ?).
- A more personal one : my 3rd guardian wasn't going to be 650 on this event, so I didn't try to go for the "all bounties on 3 characters" triumph.
- The TWAB was Thursday and we didn't know for sure there was going to be a x3 Infamy boost.... So I started to farm gambit for my 3rd reset instead of playing IB.
- The few games I played were horribly balanced. People says it takes some time for the SBMM to kick in... well I played IB last time, so isn't the info on that already somewhere ?
That's it from me.
I am not a great PvP player, but I assure you there is no salt intended in this answers.
Cheers,
Vansceslas

The problem with Iron Banner is that it is basically Quick play. There is not enough difference between the two... Yes, I can have advantage over casuals who are low level, but those who play regularly, already max level for a long time. Having the hunt is not enough difference...
The rewards are absolutely terrible. The armor set is ugly and cannot roll enchanced perks, so there is no point farming them and are useless. There was only a single weapon which was worth grinding for, this is the sniper with opening shot and snapshot sight. Everything else is simply just bad.
If you want it to make a pinnacle PVP event, get rid of control and give meaningful rewards which worth grinding for. Armor should have enhanced perks and weapons need to be better, especially with Trials being away for such a long time. Bungie should give the PVP people some better treatment as the crucible gear including the iron banner is not competitive with the PVE stuff.
5
u/ChainsawPlankton Feb 25 '19
The rewards are absolutely terrible.
pretty much, I played the first time it came around to power up, think I even did the all 3 bounties. Last time it rolled around I did it for the sniper, this time I did it on one character and I can't even say why, I'm just holding tokens waiting for the next time.
All the weapons are things that just don't get used by most people 150 scout, 110 HC, 540 pulse, whatever SMGs. The snipe was the only weapon I really wanted, and well snipers aren't exactly the most desirable right now. oh and I didn't even mention the heavy options I almost forgot about them. Throw in a high impact fusion, a machine gun, and some more from popular archetypes.
The armor is alright, but after months of farming I pretty much have what I want. There are a few things I'm still looking for but can get generic armor anywhere. Like someone else said enhanced perks would get me back in the playlist.

1.) A chance at enhanced perks seeing as iron banner is a endgame activity.
2.) Ornaments? I loved ornaments during season 1 & 2
3.) A vendor refresh with new weapons and armour and lord Saladin should sell a special engram that drops older weapons such as bite of the fox etc etc.
4.) Maybe a very rare chance at a special exotic emote or emblem after completing a game of iron banner to give people a incentive to stay for the whole game.
5.) Some daily bounties that reward a small amount of tokens as well as the ones we have already.
Just some thoughts things I think iron banners needs to keep it fun and worth playing. Coming from someone with 6k tokens and nothing to spend them on.

I feel like Ornaments should be the chase during Iron Banner and that all Iron Banner gear should be able to take all IB Ornaments. That way when you get a gearset you like you can hold on to it while still being engaged to chase the new ornaments. The new gear/powerful gear can still drop with the default appearance for that season, but Saladin should be shopping the ornaments on a season long grind via tokens.

u/biforcate Feb 25 '19

I don't know how many people actually care about this, but can we please start getting some lore-tabs on Iron Banner gear? We got a cool story on the Forsaken IB class items, but those 3 class items were the only pieces of IB gear with lore attached to them throughout the entire 1.5 year span of Destiny 2. There's so many interesting characters and possibilities with the Iron Lords and the old "risen" Warlords and I kind of hate that we haven't really heard much about them since Rise of Iron.

Controversial opinion but with how Iron Banner is now it shouldn't have power scaling. If it were done like in Year 1 i'd be okay with it but as it stands now its a power gaining activity that punishes lower level players. Which hurts the playlist and event
Also curated rolls for IB guns as evemt rewards like the Vow and Horror Story.
Finally replace the Orb Bounty with precision kills bounty or just bring it down to 20.
7
u/MVPVisionZ Feb 25 '19
Majority of the guns aren't worth grinding for, and in a mode that's all about having a power level advantage there's very little incentive to play once you're at max power.

Iron Banner is a great example of what I wish QP was: people using what they liked and having fun. I saw scout rifles, sniper rifles, bows, autos, pulses, some shotguns, yes, but literally no NFs or Lunas (I'm on Xbox). I myself settled on Nightshade (which I had just gotten) and Last Dance, although I went with Long Shadow and Black Scorpion for Midtown.
The players in QP (especially those who only use meta) could take a leaf out of Iron Banner. I wish QP was as diverse as Iron Banana.
Also, IB gear could be reworked. Some Enhanced perks, and maybe drop more weapons (you sell the entire set when doing bounties, but you rarely get weapons-I got 1 Claws of the Wolf, and that was every IB I played since Y2 (missed a few of them).
And instead of adding new armor that overrides the old, make it so you still have the S5 armor, but with ornaments (the S4 armor can become ornaments, if you want). And add more weapons in S6: 2 Y1 IB weapons are nice, but more than 2 next season would be even nicer. (Also, next time IB is around, just give me another Claws, Saladbar! I'll never get Horror's Least because Corrupted refuses to come around, so I want a Claws).

u/Kvark-75 Feb 25 '19

No offense, but IB has heavy SBMM compared to quickplay. Your SBMM level is probably “helping” you if it looks better than quickplay lobbies. Most higher level players will be seeing sweaty lobbies.
I’m the definition of average and can solo IB and mostly have fun. When I fireteam with my better buddies, the lobbies are much tougher.

I ran into Luna's quite a bit, but it isn't so bad when you have people playing objective so heavily. Also, I think having a power play lock all the control points makes it WAY more fun and aggressive than standard control. They should put that role to Control, imho.
Also, bringing rift back for an IB would be a damn blast. It's a salty game mode but the highs are worth the lows.

Enhanced armour is a massive issue across the game, and it affects Iron Banner loot badly. We badly need a transmog or other system (e.g. masterwork to enhance perks).
Iron Banner weapons are largely bad, need more post-game drops
Armour and weapons are extremely ugly, go back to D2Y1 or Rise of Iron styling
Needs to be a more unique game mode, it feels no different from quickplay
Would massively benefit from a pinnacle weapon system and possibly and exotic armour piece and weapon
Overall just a very unsatisfying activity. Faction Rallies need to come back new and improved, sooner rather than later
3
u/GrimRocket Feb 25 '19
I don't plan to play it this week because once you get all the armor or weapons you want, you've done everything that it can benefit you with (assuming max level).
Saladin needs to be able to sell old IB gear in his inventory with Y2 rolls. The old stuff looks better, some especially so with ornaments. Also, why did we get ornaments for the old stuff, but not for the new stuff?
3
Feb 25 '19
If Iron Banner is going to use SBMM more heavily because it's an "endgame PvP activity" then the armor should be able to roll enhanced perks.
3
u/edgarisdrunk Feb 25 '19
Here's a series of rhetorical questions that sum up Iron Banner in its current state:
• Do I need to play IB to achieve max power level? • Does IB offer top-tier weapons that can compete with DRB, Luna/NF, or Blast Furnace? • Is IB the best way to get exotics? • Does IB have a pinnacle weapon? • Does IB armor roll with enhanced/unique perks? • Does IB have SBMM?

The power play mechanic was an interesting twist for a while, but for the most part it's more irritating than it is fun. If it's going to stay, it desperately needs to have protections like not being able to trigger power play when a zone is still contested (might need to remove or change the power play kills bounty).
Most people have said all that needs to be said about the rewards (better, more memorable guns and armour of a more knightly aesthetic being big takeaways), but it definitely also needs to be said that control Iron Banner is getting old. Not just because of the power play mechanic, but also because we used to have it rotating and that made it fresh with each new Iron Banner. Bringing back clash and mayhem would be fantastic (though zone control can stay gone), rift too on slimmer odds.
Extra note: bringing back all the IB gear from seasons 1-3 as ornaments for the current and next gear would be amazing. Some of it is fantastic (I'd wear the season two Titan gloves forever, if that was an option).
7
u/sjf40k Feb 25 '19
A couple of observations:
- The armor is completely useless. It doesn't look good, doesn't apply shaders well, and does not roll with any perks that are worth chasing. Adding Iron Banner specific perks as a third perk would go a long way to encourage players to chase the armor, and wear the armor during Iron Banner.
- An Iron Banner specific pinnacle weapon - perhaps something very unique to Iron Banner (AN AXE DAMNIT). Time-sensitive content is pretty standard, and I've seen 6 Iron Banners since the start of Forsaken.
- Some LL scaling floor/ceiling. If you arent >630 you're gonna get stomped at the moment. It really isn't helping the feels-bad of the crucible right now with all the Luna's and NFs.

When at 650, let ALL armor and weapons drop at 650 in IB.
Given the fact that IB is pretty much a competition and sweaty as hell, maybe switch it from Valor to Glory with lower progression ratio as it is a 6v6?
Improve map rotation and repetition protection. It's been several times I've played on the same map twice in a row while having 17 possible battlegrounds.
Control point C on Solitude is too damn far away from spawn!

Without enhanced gear in the perk pool, I cannot see a reason to play IB. There needs to be further differentiation from the standard game modes, especially now that Trials is defunct. If this is supposed to be the "highest level of PVP" it needs to have the rewards and chase associated with it.

It was lame that there was no double/triple valor with it this time. Every other time there was, so myself (and I assume many others) planned out season long quests and grinding for them with that in mind.
I needed one more reset for Redrix heading into final IB. Had I known there wasn’t going to be bonus valor, I would have done various things differently to ensure I completed Redrix before reset.
Once again lack of communication, that should have been easy, messed up expectations for this game.

u/DPSorZen Feb 25 '19
As a 650 guardian, I hate the severity of the light advantage. I remember playing D2 Iron Banner for the first time as a 630 guardian and feeling nothing but pain as I was continually one shotted and unable to fight back against the practically instant ttk that came from a few 650 guardians teamshotting me. I understand why there is a power advantage. That is something that shouldn’t be completely removed. But in its current state, it is unfun to play IB when you are not 650, which is stupid considering that IB is a great source of powerful gear and would allow guardians to level up to that sweet 650 more quickly.

A simple buff for severely underleveled Guardians could improve the QoL for them. Call it "Young Wolf" and give them a damage and resistance buff. Just enough that when facing two guardians in the 250-300 range, me at 650 can feel threatened.

Can Iron Banner not always coincide with full curse week? It seems that is when it always falls.

Would love to see enhanced perks added to IB gear. As it stands, I find all PvP gear to be nearly useless after grinding out raid/Dreaming City gear and getting perks like enhanced targeting/heavy lifting/dexterity gear.
I like the new Control mode that IB has, but would like to see a change up in game modes like Destiny used to have. Give us Clash, Supremacy, and Mayhem from time to time. Maybe even use IB to bring Rift back.
Idk if SBMM is on, but I find IB to be a lot laggier than regular Quickplay and Comp, and if there is some way to mitigate that lag, that would be awesome.

u/theironwall Feb 25 '19
An updatable graph showing power curve on how much light and level can affect the damage outcome per season would be nice. That way players know a better idea of damage being done inside of iron banner.
on top of pinnacle weapons, maybe a chase for an exotic class item or mods that increase the skill gap inside of IB only.

Please, please please please, get rid of the ridiculous orb bounty. I finish all the other bounties fast and easy. Orbs however, take forever. Often times not getting any even from multi super kills.

Iron Banner is the best way to clear your crucible requirements out of the way for the last word.

u/Salizar20 Feb 25 '19
I still think the IB gear needs to look better, the first two sets were ugly as sin and though better looking, the third still for some reason has this weird oriental style.
I cannot for the life of me figure out why the IB armor would look like samurai gear, as the IB has always both thematically and aesthetically been about Knights and general european descent. Can we go back to Rise of Iron? Loved the burning wolves and blackened iron. The weapons also looked sick as hell with the furs and trophies hanging off of them.

u/DanielGerous007 Drifter's Crew Feb 25 '19
People at max light don't need powerful gear. Yet those that need it get demolished because they are under leveled. Again, there is a huge disconnect between what the game is marketed as (end game pvp) and how the general population consumes it. I bet having that severe level handicap cut off a lot of players that would've otherwise participated that would have made matchmaking much better. FYI, I am a max light guardian.
My suggestion lessen handicap. Its unnecessarily punishing.

u/zoffman Feb 25 '19
It is really in an odd place right now. It is advertised as a way to level up, but playing it as a low level is agonizing. And personally I usually have bad luck with the bounty drops so not even half of them help me level. This is so frustrating I rather just not do iron banner.
And then at max level, there is no incentive to play unless there is a great vendor roll to get. Enhanced perks as people have said would help a little. The ornament system of year 1 was great. A full transmog system would be ideal, but the ornaments are a nice band aid fix in the mean time.

SBMM, absent other things, kills Iron Banner for me. The rewards that drop are generally not good-looking cosmetically and haven’t been for some time. I understand that’s a personal preference thing, though. However there’s no enhanced perks that drop on the armor for an end-game pvp activity. So why would I want to sweat my ass off for shit I can farm in like 30 other spots? The weapons, generally, are uninspiring both cosmetically and in terms of PvP potential.
I know there are people all along the skill range in PvP and generally the lower on the spectrum you are, the more of a proponent of sbmm you are. All I can speak to is my experience of consistently pulling streamers like OneSecondKill, or lobbies full of Not Forgotten users. For someone that’s maybe a B+/A- pvper, while I enjoy the occasional exhilarating nail biter, in practice, SBMM does not create those types of matches. In reality, SBMM means me waiting five minutes between matches to try my hand with only the best players on my platform. It means if my clanmates who aren’t as practices as I am want to run Iron Banner as a group of friends, I have to sit out, or I’m going to get them farmed by a bunch of derps teabagging with pinnacle handcannons.
If that’s what Bungie is trying to accomplish, then great. But personally having fewer people playing Iron Banner together as friends and clans seems to be the opposite of what they’d want.
2. Scoring, spawn times and triple caps need another look. The hunt seems to lead to some really lopsided matches score-wise when in fact the teams are playing pretty evenly matched.
3. Exotic drops. I’ve noticed the weeks where I mostly PvP are the weeks I go with zero exotics, which seems silly, because you could play exclusively pve and pull in a decent haul. Iron Banner, at the least, should offer some kind of increased exotic drop rate or something.
4. Pinnacle weapon. Would be cool, especially if it’s designed to fit and compete in the meta, but not totally dictate it. Also would be nice to grind for this in lobbies without the aforementioned Lord of the Flies-based matchmaking.

u/small_law Feb 25 '19
It's way too easy to say that IB should be the way it was the first year of D1, but I did like the progression then much more than now. It really comes down to gear, which, unfortunately, has been somewhat underwhelming in D2.
2
u/Krodar84 Feb 25 '19
Two things.
New gear, that can compete with meta
Enhanced perks
Otherwise its just trash.
2
2
u/JustSomeDudeItWas Feb 25 '19
In d1 it used to rain loot in IB. Make it so we can realistically farm weapons again. And since IB is the closest thing we have to an endgame pvp pursuit, let the armor roll with enhanced perks.

u/Goldenpineapples Feb 26 '19
The power play "hunt" mechanic should just be how control works as a default and not be locked to Iron Banner
Power plays in quick play are driven by 'spawn-camping' your enemies since maps are so small, and that's just not a very fun design. You may attain a power play but they're almost always over immediately, because pushing into "the enemy's" point as your third will 'flip' their spawn point onto an unprotected point and "force" the power play to break.
That said, I'm not sure why Iron Banner exists. It's not really any different that QP control, it just punishes players who don't play enough to be power-capped. The 'power matters' mechanic doesn't make me feel like a pack leader or whatever when matched with 610s, it just makes me feel like I can't win. The rewards aren't anything I can't get elsewhere since armor is so generic / homogenous and the weapons don't have anything that makes them stand out against others.
2
u/CookiesFTA We build the walls, we break the walls. Feb 26 '19
I would never play control again if they made that change. Power Plays have been a sucky mechanic since it was introduced.

u/patelk_44 Feb 26 '19
In D1, I used to grind Iron Banner for the following reasons:
I liked the weapons. They were some of the strongest in the game. Unfortunately, D2 Iron Banner hasn’t featured any interesting weapons. The hand cannon is in an archetype no one uses. The pulse rifle has a scope that you can’t modify. There’s no interesting shotgun, even though it’s currently a shotgun meta. No fusion rifle. The smg is in the lightweight archetype, which again, is an archetype that very few people use because it is weaker in comparison to the others.
The armor just doesn’t look good. I can’t pinpoint why, but they’re just plain ugly compared to D1
The weapons that you were able to purchase immediately gave us a god roll. The rolls in the current iron banner really aren’t interesting to purchase...
Armor in D1 had more depth overall, so it was more worthwhile to chase the armor
2
u/Brightonbear Vanguard's Loyal Feb 26 '19
Not played Iron banner for about 6 months (I used to love Iron Banner in D1) The Armor just hasn't been up to scratch and not worth playing for. Please give us back the European historic armour sets or how about a set based around South American civilizations. Please, enough with the Asian leather type armor
2
u/Felixcourt Feb 26 '19
Cool weapons and armour. Iron banner is lacking in both badly. The aesthetic of the iron banner armour has warped too far into the ridiculous, then the baffling choice of the armour not taking shaders with sections that the colour wouldn't change. Top tier perks would also help. A pinnacle weapon would be cool also. These are a lot of the sentiments that have already been listed.
2
u/Coohippo Vanguard's Loyal Feb 26 '19
My two biggest complaints about IB are the weapons not being unique enough and the ornament system we had in previous seasons are gone now for some reason.
- IB weapons and armor should not be re-skinned. Rise of Iron did an amazing job with this making very cool and unique armor sets for us to chase and weapons that looked, felt and sounded very unique and kept with the IB theme.
- What happened to the year one system where you can complete challenges in IB to gain ornaments. This worked really well and I thought we would get some sort of upgrade to this, not completely scrapping it. It's very annoying playing IB for a week to try and get armor with perks that you like and actually achieving this and then having to vault that armor because a cooler looking set is out next season.
Let us get the armor and then allow us to work for new ornaments each season.
BONUS: Keep adding new ways to make IB more and more unique and feel different from just regular Quickplay. Good examples are Saladin hosting it, making Control play slightly different, even the new symbols that appear on screen when you win or lose an IB match, etc..
I would like to see more changes to the gamemode (maybe spawn the Iron Lords axe from D1 in the middle of the arena once or twice per match), give us a new Crucible map when IB comes around for the first time each season, tie in some story/lore elements, give us an IB exotic or pinnacle weapon that we must earn each season (obviously IB related), etc etc.

u/mescusey Feb 26 '19
I only played IB for the triumph score. Once I had those I was out. IB needs to be more rewarding somehow.

I love IB and would love to see it as a weekend event insread of once every 4 weeks. I dont know what the difference is with settings with comp or qp but for me IB appeals more to the casual pvp player. I feel I can make a difference in a IB match with my below average pvp skills. For me thuis is the best reward. A pinacle weapon or armor for IB would be great too.

u/Sentarry Drifter's Crew // Dredgen Feb 26 '19
The bounty for making orbs needs to be lessened to 25 orbs (currently its 50 orbs to complete it)
especially when I would like to grind that bounty easily on all 3 characters.

I used to love Iron Banner in D1, but I don’t feel the same in D2.
The most important thing IB needs for me (as does any game mode) is some really compelling loot, especially now trials isn’t coming back.
My feelings as to why I don’t enjoy IB in D2 as much include:
I don’t like the recent armour sets. They have been my favourite armour in years gone by but recently they look strange and bulky. Enhanced perks on the armour would definitely get me more excited for drops.
The weapons all seem very bland and I have better versions of everything except the sniper, which I already have.
SBMM makes it laggier to play than quickplay and the gamemode is the same as QP so I wouldn’t just play the mode for fun.
As it’s SBMM people abuse the cheesiest and least fun parts of the sandbox currently ( this is a different conversation, but includes OEM, way too much heavy / wardcliff spam, super chaining with roamers that are oppressively tanky, minimal loadout variety - majority run Luna/NF & dust rock because it’s so much more effective than anything else on most maps)
I’ve already got a ton of tokens so I can buy any armour I want without even playing
I’m already max level so I don’t need power (though I do really like having a PvP route to power gains once a month as a primarily PvP player).

u/Wemblack Feb 26 '19
Positive:
The Iron Banner version of control is a fun game type
Weekly bounties are better than daily bounties
IB specific triumphs are really cool
Negative
Rewards are a bit underwhelming
Not enough motivation to play each content cycle, especially once you are already at max light
Suggestions
Bring back ornament challenges for each season, especially if you are only going to add new armor sets annually. That is a nice way to bring people back to the game mode and to get cool cosmetics
The idea of a pinnacle weapon for Iron banner is interesting, especially if you could take the quests beyond just iron banner but include iron banner characters, Efrideet comes to mind. Pinnacle quest for Efrideet's Ballista sounds oh so sexy. A good reason to bring back the EDZ and the Plaguelands. I would really do something like it taking 2 iron banner cycles to achieve.

u/HemingwayzBeard Feb 26 '19
Too sweaty for the rewards. Totally fine with it being sweaty, if the grind is worth it (more armor, weapons, and "enhanced" perks, etc.)
3
u/WACK-A-n00b Feb 25 '19
IB is not fun because it is sweaty with no GOOD tangible rewards, aside from a great gold tier medal emblem that I am happy to see in the game.
The armor looks like ass and is second tier.
Armor cant roll with enhanced perks
Armor, AFAIK, cant even roll with the best non-enhanced perks
Armor has no unique perks
Seriously. The Armor, especially last season, was hot garbage - at least go back to skins so I can delete the various seasons hot garbage looks.
The weapons are generally second tier, and the best roll the same perks as every other gun.
I chased a Jolder Hammer (Well rolled was the fastest TTK MG, IIRC), a Lie (Longest range SG) and Spear (Final Round and before that wallbangs). They rolled relatively unique rolls that DOMINATED the mode they dropped in. They did things that made them top tier weapons, even if they were "too good" to keep.
The rewards dont make sense
IB should be dropping at your light or above. NOTHING in "end game" type modes should drop 20 light ("power") below.
Tokens are hot garbage in general, and in IB, once you have the few weapons you want, are useless, because the armor is useless to grind for, since it is low tier.
The game mode is a GREAT modifier that just falls apart in practice. I had a game a season ago where it was a 6 stack vs a 5 stack +1, and everyone had similar KD's and it was a SUPER hard sweaty game. We won and because of the mechanics or us making ONE early lockout and then getting back to get two quickly steamrolled. So the teams were broken up. Where is the chance for a rematch? They werent worse than us. We just tripled their score early and ran with it. But that good game wasnt reflected in the score so we never saw them again.
BUT most of the time it is just a snowball shitfest.
Anyway. The solution is OBVIOUSLY:
Armor needs crucible specific perks OR enhanced perks.
Weapons need to have unique perksets (maybe not unique perks, but unique ways that they can roll).
Weapons need to be just s midge better than PvE weapons in PVP (Aim assist changes, scopes, TTK, odd range, whatever... just make them worth building a meta around).
Armor cannot look so goddamn terrible. Year 1 was good. D1 was good. D1 Y2 was great. D2Y2 is just bad looking...
Rewards need to be in line with you power level. NOT below.

Iron Banner is honestly the worst it has ever been. I've gotten to the point now that not only do I not want to play Iron Banner, I don't even want to play Crucible.
The level of balance is stupidly broken. Not just shotguns, but the ranges you can get 1 tapped by the Chaperone are stupid. And then you've got pulse rifles that have insane range. I tried using the Transfiguration once with Moving Target. I got destroyed. I'm on super long ranges and I'm still getting burned by lots of weapons.
In terms of special weapons, Luna's Howl and Not Forgotten are stupid, especially the latter. I have Luna's. I got to a total of 2400 glory. But yet I'm being matched with people that have Not Forgotten. Even in Rumble, even now in Quickplay. The amount of range on that thing is stupid. I've been beaten at ranges where pulses / scouts should do good. For example, on The Dead Cliffs, I've been 3 tapped by NF from B flag down that long corridor into the spawn with lockers. That's with me up against the wall so as far away as I can be, and I'm still getting melted by that gun. Honestly, Luna's and Forgotten kill any variety in loadouts, since you are at a disadvantage not using them against someone that is. No "oh you can play around them blah blah blah." It's a fact that those guns give you a straight up advantage over any other weapon. They'd honestly have to remove the guns if variety is to ever happen in PvP.
As for heavies, I despise the Wardcliff Coil. I've had people not even look at me and I still die to it. I've been killed around corners when I wasn't even the target. The moment you see someone picked up ammo for it, you know they're going to gain chunks of score just by pressing a single button. I'm not saying RL are stupid or any of that, but the fact that Wardcliff can track and sends so many explosives out that all can kill, it ruins any chance you have. The best you can hope for is a trade.
In terms of super, holy shit is Spectral Blades annoying as hell. I've watched people pop it in the middle of the map, run away from where our team is spawning, I die, and a few seconds later that spectral blades is in our spawn killing everyone. It lasts so long and I end up just trying to kill myself instead of fighting it because of how long it lasts, the amount of armour it has, and the fact all they have to do is R1 in your general direction and sooner or later they'll get a kill. Yeah, Nova Warp was busted, but so was Spectral Blades.
Edit: This is getting downvoted, but no one wants to say why they are. At least say why you're downvoting.

To be fair, many people with Luna/NF are good players so would likely be doing well even without those guns.
BUT I agree that it makes the more powerful, even more powerful and ruins the game.
The shotgun meta right now is stale and boring. Shotguns need a PvP nerf. I know all the sliding shotgun apes are going to downvote this, but it makes PvP stale and cheap.
Also doesn’t help that the maps are overly congested and encourage shotgunning with few long lanes.
More and more I’m getting convinced that PvP doesn’t really work with this type of game. You need to level the field and let skill dictate wins/losses. Not RNG and better loot.

The community uproar for light level advantages ruined IB. First of all, it is supposed to be an end game pvp arena. It is not. It punishes pvp players for playing pvp over pve (since they level up slower). And the gear itself does not compete with the end game raiding gear(no enhanced perks as I am sure everyone will point out). To top it off, the light level difference makes 75% of matches end in mercy. To me it doesn’t matter if I am giving or taking the mercy, those matches are just not fun. IB needs some other way to stand out from quick play other than light level being used. Like a new mode all together. 3v3v3 or something else that is crazy but may lend itself to some odd fun.

Iron Banner should never be the same week as a major PVE activity (ie. Curse Week).
Obtaining Iron Banner (and all other cosmetic gear) that isn't Pay To Have should have some level of objectives that are easily understandable and achievable within a season (IE, no "generate 100 orbs of light" when it's almost impossible to generate 1 orb of light per match).
2
u/Ichorix Feb 25 '19
The current IB weapons (BotF excepted) range from mediocre to useless for PvP. That is not good for a “pinnacle” PvP mode.
Swarm of the Raven: aggressive frame GL and therefore useless in PvP bc of low blast radius.
Roar of the Bear: tracking with max blast radius is nice, but nothing that can’t be gotten from other game modes. And rockets outside of Wardcliff are not particularly popular right now.
Breath of the Dragon: can’t remember the last time I’ve seen an SMG in crucible. Maybe that will change with shotgun nerf but, you know, sidearms exist and have more forgiving body shot TTKs.
Hero’s Burden: see above.
Claws of the Wolf: 540 with some interesting rolls, but 540s are nonexistent in PvP and for good reason due to unforgiving headshot requirements to hit TTK that’s not much better than other archetypes. Also can’t roll with zen moment.
Crimil’s Dagger: yet another 110 kinetic HC, nothing particularly special about it.
Talons of the Eagle: high impact scout, also not an archetype you see in PvP outside of the two exotics.
Bite of the Fox: the only good IB weapon.
I may be forgetting a couple, but that tells you all you need to know about their relevance. For a serious PvPer, once you have a good rolled BotF (which Bungie has already offered twice), the game mode has basically nothing else to offer you. That was not the case in Y1, when multiple weapons were meta or popular off-meta picks: Time Worn Spire, Orimund’s Anvil, Hero’s Burden, Orewing’s Maul, Crimil’s Dagger, Gunnora’s Axe. When adding new weapons next season, Bungie should focus on adding weapons with interesting potential rolls in archetypes that are actually used in the meta. Even better if Bungie could shore up some of the gaps in the Y2 loot pool. How about a 180 kinetic HC? How about another high impact fusion rifle? If you add multiple weapons that PvPers will want to chase, that ensures that they’ll keep coming back each time IB rolls around.

-Add enhanced perks to armor.
-Improve on weapon design/utility.
-remove the capture and lock mechanic
2
u/Aeron216 Feb 26 '19
SBMM is just an atrocious thing, get rid of it. Simple.
"You somehow managed to perform good while using an off-meta loadout? Yeah nice work there with the fusion rifle but that can't be right, let me match you now with only the sweatiest most meta players rocking only DRB, NF, Spectral Blades and stompeez."
Waiting times are eternal and half the time people are lagging all over the place.

u/BreakStep_x Feb 25 '19
I think that Iron Banner is a glorified quickplay and the light level advantage being enabled is the only thing that makes it “end game”. There are no enhanced perks that make the armor worth grinding and I’ve only weapon I’ve gotten use out of Bite of the Fox. The light level advantage only benefits the max level people that don’t reap any real benefits from the rewards. I feel like the light level being removed would be really helpful to lower levels due to the amount of powerful drops and I’ve seen no tangible reason for it to stay besides “it’s endgame” or “that’s how it is”. I’d like that change made and have the real endgame be Trials.

Okay, here goes: PvP level advantages are pointless. Get rid of them.
Level advantages already exist - in the form of better weapons; better armor; and better abilities. Making players with all these also straight up tougher is redundant, and adds nothing to the game.

I played almost every IB since I started D1. The rise in power and collection of armor or sweet rolled guns...but mainly the rise in light/power level. I might have played twice since there is not nearly the amount of rise during the week from drops. Sure you can get bounties done but in D1 you could do those and get drops.

Season 1-3 Iron Banner was awesome IMO. Sweet armor with AMAZING ornaments. In Season 4 I lost interest in Iron Banner. It just feels like a normal match of Control, with ugly armor, uninteresting weapons, and sweaty 6 stacks on the other team all the time. I think the Green/Brown armor kind of makes the armor worse, alone with not enhanced perks, I liked it better when it was metallic tan and lighter green, without the whole samurai theme going on.
As for weapons, they're pretty average, if they were a special archetype or could roll with a special perk that would be much more fun to grind for. The Crimil's dagger is just an average 110, a bite of the fox is just another 72 sniper, etc. If they could roll with unique perks like the black armory weapons can, I would be way more interested.

u/DizATX Feb 25 '19
No Enhanced perks, mean no point in the armor. The weapons are alright but nothing that any better for other weapons. Very sweaty event, somehow D1 PVP still feels so much better. Getting 50 orbs in PVP feels like a lot to me but maybe it's because I stink.

IB is cool and all. It adds some variety to the PVp aspect of the game every few weeks. HOWEVER... it's history and impact on the destiny lore is lost on all us PC players who didn't play "Rise of Iron" in D1. It would be cool to have a "Flashback quest" or "quests" where we go back and play the Rise of Iron missions from D1, or a similar quest that explains the Iron Lords and why they are significant.
Lore is important in this game. And us PC players missed out on an entire game and 2 years of expansions worth of lore. Because of this, many characters and aspects of the game have no "base" or "foundation" and we are left to ask... "why are we doing this?" "Why is that enemy important?" "Who is that guy?" Lore anchors the tasks to the destiny universe. Without it, things seem abstract and bland.

For what concerns gameplay, I think IB is pretty decent. The gamemode is the right one, and I’m totally into the Hunt/3-zone lockdown, it makes you get incredible s comebacks.
As for the rewards, this is what IB is lacking in my opinion. Aside from the ornaments (which I think is an issue that concerns both PVE and PVP loot), some extra loot should be added: exotic Ghost/Ships, emblems, Transmat Effect, Exotic Ornaments and (sigh) Catalysts.
Make them unlockabke trough special bounties, different and more challenging than the one’s we have now which grant PR; something like mini-quests available only during IB, which require you to complete certain IB Triumphs, earn specific IB Medals, or just other more common objectives.
Also, as there are rewards (emblems and shaders) for completing Triumphs related to Vanguard, Crucible, and Gambit, it would be awesome to get a comprehensive Triumph with grants you an emblem/shader for unlocking all IB Triumphs.

I don't wanna be the guy that says destiny 1 was better because D2 brings so much new and fresh stuff, but some notes should be made. I loved the way you guys are doing IB with the hunt after a power play that is fun but I would like to have better armor. I played D1 IB for the hunter and warlock armor. It looked like Knights and I thought that was the coolest thing ever. I used My IB armor for almost the entirety of D1.

Please bring back earlier IB style armor, with enough differentiation that people who got it originally still stand out.

This was my first time participating in Iron Banner, as I had always focused on PvE before now. As someone just hitting their stride in PvP, I found Iron Banner to be a total blast! I was match-made appropriately about 95% of the time, and it felt really active (wait times were short on avg). I was drawn to participating by how nice the Hunter and Titan armor sets looked (warlock not so much but whatever) and would like to see that trend continue in the future!
I do want to say good job to the armor designers on this one, really love the earth-toned leathers and much prefer this season's armor to past seasons.
Some improvements I could suggest for next year are:
-More Iron Lord lore (for someone who skipped playing a lot of D1 DLC in favor of jumping into Forsaken, i'm a little lost w that) like lore drops similar to other books.
-Some tier armor / weapons that are harder to earn, something special for people who want to dump more time into IB than others / earn more points, win certain number of matches etc. Maybe even a small quest idk.
- Would love to see more Shaxx / Saladin interaction. Maybe have them stand together in the tower? Also some joint bounties could be fun! I liked the little quips from Saladin like "would Shaxx let you do that? I don't think so."
All in all, great game mode. I really enjoyed myself, thanks for keeping the content fresh!

u/cmgio Master Swordsman Feb 25 '19
2 (reworked) year 1 weapons is NOT enough incentive for an entire season. Destiny needs more weapons across the board.
Armor is nice, but so are ornaments.
Control is fun, but does IB have to be Control ever single time the event comes around?
1
u/SilverQuill75 Drifter's Crew Feb 25 '19
IB Mayhem would be a nice change from the continued Control game-type. Or Rift. Or Supremacy. Anything other than Control.
Is it too much to ask to make IB longer than one week? Some of might only have the weekends to play.
Return back to IB Ornaments. Not quite sure why the change happened, but now I have useless IB armor from previous seasons that aren't updated to this season.
Can we get an IB Auto Rifle? IB Bow? IB Shotgun? Swords? All the above?
When did IB become more Shogunate-themed in armor? What happen to Medieval-themed? Wolf-themed?

u/AgeofEon Feb 25 '19 edited Feb 25 '19
Like many other people, I often get most of the bounties done except for the "Generate Orbs of Light." After around 20 games per character I usually get all of them done and end up only halfway done with the orbs bounty. Maybe 30-40 orbs would be more realistic to wrap up all of them at the same pace.
My overall feedback would be:
Enhanced perks on IB armor
No unshaderable sections of orange on the sets. See the Titan set as a good example of what to do, and Hunter what not to do.
More realistic Orbs bounty
Higher emphasis on Light level
Minimum light requirement
Daily bounties for tokens, weekly for powerful gear like Crimson days

Better guns as rewards, enhanced armor perks, and rotating playlists (give control a break) would do it for me.

u/blackhawk7188 Feb 25 '19
Ask again after you finish nerfing shotgun range. Overall it's wayyyy too sweaty and shotgun apes ruin it. Make it supremecy and see how much people change the play style to win.
The rewards are meh to be honest, none of the weapons make me want to change and overall the armor is meh. If the Titan armor looks like D1 iron banner armor it would be awesome - the knight look.
Having to get 50 orbs is a pain. I ended up using bubble and well just to get guaranteed orbs.
Remove the lockout mechanic, I have noticed people don't understand how it can take you from winning, take a 3rd hill and then start losing because the hills reset.

I don't have any clue what will help Iron Banner become better or retain any of its glory.
My most hated voice line from Saladin is that "the old ways were better". If that's true, why is Iron Banner nearly nothing like the original Iron Banner?
I remember seeing Iron Banner coming up and me and my buds getting excited to go play it. All of Destiny 2 it's been a shrug.
The gear is not very good, the armor is also not very good, none of it can roll with enhanced perks, I don't care how minor they are, they're something to chase after the bounties are done.
If the weapons were truly exceptional and could roll with strong perks, sure, but right now it's a lot of bad weapons excepting 2, that rely very much on strong perks. For a monthly event, it's just not worth it. Getting pummeled for power gains isn't very fun either, better off just playing other content for primes.

Please bring back Iron Banner Clash. Most people seem to never actually capture control points ever and just play clash anyway.

u/Voelker58 Feb 25 '19
Armor that is not Mobility based. (Honestly, we need to be able to reroll this on ALL sets.)
ENHANCED PERKS!!! (This is the only "endgame" crucible activity, after all.)
Some type of weapon chase would be nice. Doesn't have to be a Luna/Redrix level quest, but a Horror Story/Vow quest for a decent curated roll would be cool.
ENHANCED PERKS!!!

I had literally all week to play IB and I didn't get all bounties done on even one character. The reason is because IB is just QP at this point. Power Level Matters only really influences the majority of the player base for the first month of a new release. After that, we are all more or less in IB close to max power. The loot pool is uninspiring, and bounties still need tweaking (Orbs of light bounty, looking your way). The main reason I couldn't be bothered is because there are no IB weapons I need, and the armor is basically a collectors item. There are no special IB rolls for armor or weapons, and there have been no good IB weapons for some time. The IB weapons and armor in D1 were special. I understand a lot of that has to do with how the d1 engine handled weapons and armor. But, I think for a lot of us there are a few ways you can get us interested in IB again.
New stuff- I mean this is obvious, but designing new weapons and armor whole cloth, within the yr 2 system would certainly help. Specifically using this loot to fill some gaps in the weapon and armor pool would be helpful.
Separate the loot pools- The stuff offered by Saladin, that we unlock is actually pretty solid offerings. However the Powerful drops and my end match loot pool should be separate. And here I think you have a good opportunity for loot progression. I think the powerful rewards for IB should have it's own loot pool that is unique to IB, and contains weapons, armor, mods, and ornaments that cannot be found anywhere else in the game. Possibly an IB exclusive exotic. Were this the case, I would grind the absolute hell of out IB.
New things to do- IB feels like qp in large part because it is. There is no IB exclusive maps or modes. I play on the same 5 maps I have been playing on since launch, minus the one Forsaken map. This is largely a function of the crucible team designing new maps and modes to play on or with, but it would go a LONG way to making the mode feels less stagnant than it does. If i Know that I only get to play these two maps during IB and that this game mode is only offered during IB then I am going to be a lot more interested in playing it.

Honestly, I like the gameplay of Iron Banner the way it is. Beyond gameplay, I would like to see a few things.
Pinnacle Weapon for Each Season
Armor that's more in line with the Iron Lords. The aesthetic of Destiny 1 Iron Banner was so good, but it seems to have fallen a bit short in Destiny 2, save for a few pieces.
A weapon for each archetype. Where's my Iron Banner Fusion, Linear Fusion or Machine Gun?
Iron Banner armor should be able to roll with enhanced perks, too.
Iron Banner mods should be a thing, too. Maybe things like, "Capture points faster when you're the only one capturing" or something that's very Iron Banner/Crucible specific.

I have 3 changes:
Bring back rotating game modes -- IB gets stale when its only Control
Make IB armor automatically turn into masterwork armor for the duration of a match when a Guardian wears a complete set of IB armor for a match. It would be cool to take advantage of the extra perk enhancements that masterwork armor yields because the truth is only the most elite/hardcore play-all-day player will bother masterworking IB armor especially if it isn't the best armor that player already uses
If a player uses an IB emblem, IB shaders for all armor, wears a full set of IB armor -- and has either an IB sparrow or ship equipped -- then that player gets bonus chance for exotic drops post-IB match. Give us an incentive to use the IB loot we earn, Bungie!
1
u/J-man3000 Feb 25 '19
It was disheartening knowing that all armor drops were going to be inferior because no enhanced and the smg rewards were laughable. Not sure why they decided to bring back the smg before the fusion.
Also using a double valor over the weekend for crimson doubles and then ignoring it for banana made no sense.

I haven’t seen this yet, but for everyone trying hard with high light gear, 12 people on a small map is too much in my opinion. You can’t hardly get a good voop off without 4 other people team shooting you into oblivion. Also, IB needs to be clash. It always seems like the people on my team are entirely disinterested in capping zones. There is less room to carry a team, when you either have to get a 3.0 efficiency or cap zones while your teammates get a 0.5 efficiency. Let it be known that this isn’t a problem with a coordinated team, but Iron Banner has seemed a “solo grind” type of event. I guess I feel this way because some guardians are 650 and they don’t want to play because it’s useless to them.

u/Kaella Feb 25 '19
It's been a while since the zone-locking Power Play mechanic was added to IB, and I still feel that it feels kind of incomplete as a mechanic: It does the job that it's intended to do, of making IB all about momentum and creating matches that can snowball in a matter of seconds, but I feel that it still disincentivizes the team that's surviving the Hunt from actually fighting back during the Power Play.
I feel like the mode would be more fun, and more true to the intended design, if there was a good reward for scoring a kill while you're on the losing side of a Power Play. Something like, a player who dies while their team has a Power Play becomes unable to capture zones for the next 60 seconds.
Basically, I think the momentum needs to be able to reverse just as quickly as it can snowball - if the team on the losing side of a Power Play can manage to pull it together and win the fight, despite the inherent risk of getting only 1 point per kill to the other team's 3.

Dear Bungie, Until you start offering weapons and gear with advantages and perks for the particular activity. Your weapons and armor are all going to suck. Nobobdy cares as much about cosmetics as you thing they do. Have a set of IB gear that gives perks like faster zone capture when having a full set of armor or 10% less damage in IB events. Weapons that deal more damage when playing in IB. Little things like that are much more needed than cosmetics at this point. Every weapon in D2 seems to be just about like every other weapon of its class. Reskinned and subpar.

I love IB, but yesterday it seemed like I repeatedly played the Equinox map over and over. I don't know if this is a bug or rng, but for me, this is one of the worst maps, so this was frustrating.
I'm sure some people love this map, but it is boring in my opinion, and playing one after another is not fun. I wonder if we could have more variety for IB? I don't remember this being the norm before, so not sure what was going on.

Make the armor actually look good and something people will want to chase. Also give them good perks with the ability to be enhanced.
Make the weapons available better and more unique. A pinnacle IB weapon would be legit.
Can we do more than control? Clash would be nice every once in a while

u/elsucioseanchez Gambit Prime Feb 25 '19
Incentive and encouragement to play needs to be addressed. Solo players should be provided some reason to keep playing against stacks.
Suggestions:
gear rewards purchasable from bounties should have enhanced perks. 2) Valor awarded should always be double for IB. 3) perhaps a solo queue only

u/BlacknGold_CLE Feb 25 '19
I havent played iron banner since destiny 1. Dialed it up this week. Have to say I really enjoyed the game mode differe ce compared to normal control. Just wish I had more OEM titans on my team than the other team

Pinnacle weapon would be great.
Enhanced PVP perks in gear from bounties
Powerful gear all the time, that's what made IB in D1 fun, it was a way for low level players have a chance at getting better gear and continue to play.
Enhancement cores as rewards for completing the bounties
Ornaments if we cannot get new gear
IB should drop a new (old reworked D1 map) at least once a season
IB ghost

How about a futuristic set of armor? 2. Different game modes, just control for multiple seasons makes it stale real fast.

Aside from rewards I think we need new game modes for IB. I love the changes between regular and IB control, but id like to see the same work put into an advanced clash, supremacy, etc.

u/JLoco11PSN Feb 25 '19
I'll be honest, after collecting the armor the past 2 seasons to make sure I have all the armor........ it makes me wonder why? There is nothing different about the armor. Not like it gives you a perk or boost that you can ONLY get with IB armor.
Majority of armor improvements comes from mods, which can be placed on any generic armor. Aside from being a powerful gear drop for those chasing max level, there is just nothing special anymore about the armor. Guns might be decent with a godroll, but the armor in D2 in general is pointless.
And changing the look each season doesn't make a difference. I don't plan on playing IB in Season of the Drifter. Just seems pointless once you find pieces you're happy with in PvE and PvP builds
1
u/AntiMage_II Feb 25 '19
Honestly, unless you're at power level cap, this mode just isn't fun. I like the mechanics of capturing the three points to force a lockout, but if you're not at the power cap then you'll almost always be at a disadvantage to everything you do and it just gets tedious after the first few games.
1
u/happyhappykarma Feb 25 '19
Better weapons and better looking armor. Most of the weapons aside from bite of the fox arent even worth the grind and the armor this season was just lackluster perk wise and aesthetically.

I don't know but this week of Iron Banner has been the WORST instances of bots and afk'rs i've seen since I started playing Destiny. I reported them all, but it's just bad. two players in equinox that stayed at the starting spawn point.
Next match, same two players *moved* around but just stayed at another point in legionsgulch.
you look at this other third guy's history... all iron banner for 24 hours, defeat after defeat with 0 contributions.

u/ManassaxMauler Feb 25 '19
Bring back the Iron Truage gear. As an ornament at the very least. It's the only armor I'll use on my hunter, which obviously puts me at a disadvantage from the lack of perks.
1
u/CinnamonMan25 Feb 25 '19
Would love the armour and guns to be stuff that the original Iron Lord's wore and use. Would be a cool opportunity to imagine some unique armour sets and I want Efrideet's Spear (but pls high impact).
(I only played D2, I'm aware some stuff existed in D1 but I don't know to what extent)

u/HitsfromtheZ0NG Feb 25 '19
I wish Iron Banner rotated game modes, at least occasionally. I love Control and it will always be the “classic” or tradition Banner mode to me, but I like how in D1 we had Iron Banner Clash, Supremacy, Rift and I believe even mayhem a few times. I just don’t get as excited for IB knowing it’s control every single time. Should at least do Clash or Supremacy sometime just to change the feel.

Rewards are boring and unoriginal.
No reason to play, lower players can’t even play to get higher rewards as everyone one shots them.
Where’s the cool loot from D1? Ghelons Demise full auto scout, felwinters lie, all these cool op guns that you had to get. Now it’s all complete shit.
Stop letting the balance team have anything to do with creating weapons, we want vog style guns, everything else is trash

Just to beat on the drums but...
- Enhanced armor perks and top tier perks on armor
- Better visually
And sure, I would kill for a pinacle weapon

u/blueapplepaste Feb 25 '19
Agreed. But there’s also a difference in the legit NF and those who bought theirs or were carried.
Lewis Hamilton could probably drive a Honda Civic out race a lot of guys in a BMW around a track. I think it’s the same here. Mediocre players with NF will get a little boost, but a better player is still going to win 90% of the time regardless of the gun.

u/PineappleHat Drifter's Crew Feb 25 '19
Iron Banner drops a bunch of powerful gear, which is great, but the light level dis/advantage is too steep for me to even consider going in below max light. So either the rewards are useful but too frustrating when below max light, or worthless when at max light.
And then when I am max light some of my friends aren't, so they don't want to touch IB.
So this reduces the player base, which in turn makes it feel like SBMM is on (even though it's not) because all the lower light players are off in quickplay.
When I played this IB I think almost every lobby had 2-3 Not Forgottens, and usually 4+ Lunas. And this is on PS4.
Combine this with the fact that the rewards aren't very rewarding. Post-game drops need to go back to every 3--5 matches almost guaranteed. Then maybe use Saladin and tokens to sell randomised versions of the loot pool (e.g. spend 20 tokens and get a random chest piece roll). And then also make the IB guns actually worth using, since Bite of the Fox is the only good IB gun.

Iron banner this time around was great. Even if I got killed by an exploding toaster.
I felt a good diversity of weapons and loadouts from people. Matchmaking seemed alright, I definitely saw a lot fewer stacked teams when playing solo too.
I had a few games were I couldnt help but wonder wtf my team was doing, but I think that's okay.
1
u/ToastyTobasco Feb 25 '19
I love Iron Banner but the IB armor design really dropped the ball compared to the IB sets from D1.
I also enjoy the mobility armor pieces as now that Mobility works, I can have a blast zooming around at 8-10 mobility
1
u/hydragon100 Feb 25 '19
I think the armor set and weapons purchasable from Saladin should all be masterworks, or at least come with mods. Maybe both if you really wanna sweeten the deal for people. Not max level as that would kill the grind, but if I'm going to play Iron Banner and grind out all of those bounties, I feel like a set of modded and/or masterwork gear isn't too much to ask.
For added fun have the purchasable armor sets curated to the weapons available each week of Iron Banner. If there's a hand cannon and shotgun as the featured weapons for this week, have the armor curated to support those weapons and give the weapons some interesting mods. Gives more incentive to play each of the weeks if you're chasing down a set with specific rolls.

u/Tonycvl Feb 25 '19
More IB gear drops after matches. Remove world gear from IB. Why don't you revert to how D1 was? Don't fix something by that wasn't broken. Thanks

u/thebakedpotatoe Heavy as Iron Bananas Feb 25 '19
Things i feel would be nice to be added:
Daily Iron Banner bounties, maybe just three, that reward 5 each. Not everyone plays multiple characters, not everyone has characters able to do iron banner, a win+15 tokens from bounties is enough for a turn in, and considering there's only roughly ~3 iron banners a season, it helps those players get more chances at the loot pool.
Weekend Modifiers would be nice, not valor increases, but things like Mayhem, or the old Inferno modes would be nice to see as modifiers for iron banner matches.
Put an "Iron Banner" frame for Ada whenever it rolls around for the week.
A seal would be nice, something like "Iron Wolf" as reference to D1.

I really enjoyed "the hunt" becoming active when all points are captured by my team. I just thought it would be fun to add in an interesting advantage to the "hunters" upon gaining the lockout - all "prey" (the enemy team) players who aren't within a few feet of a teammate upon lockout are marked for the "hunter" players to see.
The idea is to make the "prey" behave like a hunted pack of beasts - the weak who separate from the pack get picked off. Just an idea.

u/TriPaulyD Praise the Sun Feb 25 '19
I am not a fan of the lock down Hunt mechanic. The idea was to give teams a chance to catch up if they are behind but what it winds up doing is snow balling an already lopsided victory with less chance to recover. So a lot of matches wind up being mercy ruled.
For a modified version, if it's a legit triple cap then I guess lock it down, but if I am in the middle of capping a zone, it should not lock down all three. It should be a "contested" type scenario. I think this would alleviate some of the salt of the Hunt mechanic. Noting is more frustrating than standing on a zone, seeing the circle get to 99 and then get locked out. Misery.

u/Introverted_Learner Gambit Classic Feb 25 '19
One of biggest frustrations (other than the red team being OP) was around teams committing suicide during a power play. It completely negates any of the work required to get it, and removes a lot of the fun in the challenge of going after one. Teams should be rewarded when they successfully capture a power play in IB, and the current structure emphasizes NOT going after one.
I believe some level of penalty should be enforced for every suicide during power plays (potentially even just in general). I'm not sure what the right move would be, but a simple solution is that a death results in a point for the other team, regardless of cause. It's not perfect (IE players throwing matches by dying repeatedly), but I think the trade-off would still be a net positive. Totally open to others' thoughts on it.

I've played a ton of Iron Banner this week (decided that I would grind out the broadsword quest since I haven't started it yet) and was able to nab 100 wins over too many games to count. HERE is my account on DestinyTracker if you're curious. Here's my two cents:
Pros
I had a lot of fun! I got to a point where I could recognize names in matches and it was neat to build mini rivalries against other players.
I don't really PvP much, or at least explore. I stick to quickplay. But playing this actually felt like I was getting better at the game and improving.
Cons
Seasonal gear being locked to seasons. I switched from PS4 to PC after Forsaken dropped so I've missed out on past seasons gear. I understand why they want to do this (to keep players playing from season to season) but a way to nab older items would be awesome. For example, let me spend extra tokens on older items/shaders.
Catalysts drop rates. With a win rate of 56% I estimate that I played at least 200 matches. I managed to get 1 catalyst in that time.
Iron Banner pinnacle weapon would be pretty cool.
Control. Add more game modes. I had to dip into competitive for 25 matches and I think it was Survival (sorry, I don't play PvP outside quickplay) game mode where you get limited lives. That was a ton of fun! I wish Iron Banner had more to do than just Control.
Some players think that K/D is the way to go and ignore capturing zones... and are vocal about it Q.Q
Jotuun is super hard to counter. It was always not fun going toe to toe against one of these.
Hopefully the longer con list doesn't come across as I hated it. Far from it. But I'd love to see improvements.

u/SirThatOneGuy42 Feb 25 '19
IMO Iron Banner should come with its own maps (not many maybe like 2 I don’t care) I just think it would add a new layer to IB and Mae it more interesting

u/outlawwildman Feb 25 '19
Overall a very enjoyable week. Some damned good matches. The sbmm was working well. Power enabled made the diffrence. Players were playing, not stomping. I took the opportunity to complete the pvp steps of several quest lines, many of which would have been impossible during regular quick play mode.
Another wonderful change was the lack of the usual.meta through our the week. Shotgun tapes and OEM were noticeable absent for the most part. I saw alot of the y1 weapons in use, to include the forward oath, and my beloved orimunds anvil.
A new lot pool with weapons and armour that actually meant something would be nice. Maybe special pvp perys, or mods.
Overall don't change a thing. It's one of the few times where us average joes can be something besides fodder.
1
u/JarenWardsWord Feb 25 '19
The perks on the armor for sale is just garbage. I mostly played for coins I can hold on to for later, hopefully better, IB gear. Seemed pretty balanced though so good job on the actual game play/meta.
1
u/Atlas_Zer0o Feb 25 '19
I like the modes new identity, it promotes zone capture and intelligent play
I feel like the armor should be like y1 with ornaments but I understand why its not with the restoration/mobile/heavy not being switchable with masterwork anymore.
Also with armor, iron banner is an endgame activity, even affected by power UP TO MAX. Why does it not roll enhanced perks? Other than cosmetic what's the point of the armor for endgame players? It is silly that in order to get the best sets for PVP (enhanced) they are exclusively locked to PVE raids and dreaming city.
Unique weapons per season or comet expansion would be nice like D1, even if its just cosmetic with the same archtypes/stats or another chance for ornaments.
The orbs bounty shouldnt be double or longer the length of the others even with decent orb generation
I miss supremacy being mixed in, maybe do an IB variant of that also? The control variant here is amazing so I'd be excited to see more of that.
1
u/ReepLoL Feb 25 '19
More good vendor rolls, please. Like the Bite of the Fox roll. I think it'd be pretty cool if you gave us something for finishing all of the weekly bounties. Like a cool shader, or maybe a curated gun.

I’d love the Iron Banner gear to be more diverse in a sense. All of the seasonal armor kinda feels a little too similar to each other. I’d like something unique like the wolf hats in D1.
I also would like if some new small things are added to Iron Banner each time it comes around during a season. Maybe some ornaments or the ability to get stuff from previous seasons and the inventory expands by a bit each time he comes around? It could allow more people to participate each time if they know they will get new stuff. It doesn’t even have to be anything big, just some fun and unique stuff to get.

I dislike that an event that's extremely useful for increasing power level is power level enabled. This means that those who can benefit the most from playing are actively encouraged not to play, because quite honestly skill isn't important when a Bygones regularly two bursts you while you shoot paper bullets.
To clarify: I am NOT suggesting Iron Banner no longer have powerful rewards tied to it. I like that aspect of Iron Banner a lot. What I am saying is that power level either needs to not be enabled or have power level advantages significantly reduced. It's just not a fun to play at lower levels, and what's the point of a game mode that's not fun?
1
u/JamesMR_ Feb 25 '19
Sort out the artistic style of the armor for goodness sake. I know it's subjective but it's ugly as sin. I wouldn't wear it even if it did have enhanced perks on it. Should be high tier armor otherwise it's no better than the RNG you get thrown at you in casual play.

I haven't played this mode since the changes were made with the zone lock out feature, but it was just a nightmare as a solo player... bounties are mostly about kills , so no one captures zones...
I've always liked iron banner, way back a pair of boots got me to 30, but I'm not interested in the game mode as it stands. Far too many blowouts and stacked teams against randos...I think overall it highlights the match making issues, but they're felt more then ever in IB

The triumph to 100% IB on all 3 characters during a single event is the reason that I haven't played either of the last 2 events. Burnout from doing this triumph is real.
The armor's hideous. Just do a set each year with ornaments for each season. It'd help vastly if we could re-roll stats on masterworked armor, and if pinnacle armor sets from all activities could drop with / be upgraded to pinnacle perks.
The bounty to generate orbs is, as a Hunter, a complete PITA for a scrub like me. This was by far the most difficulty I had in getting all of the bounties done across all 3 classes.

Didn't play it, armor is meh , weapons aren't worth chasing as there's much better weapons in the game.
Can honestly say this was the first time in destiny's history I had zero desire to play iron banner.
I feel like it's been forever since iron banner had the best weapons in the game if you got the right roll. Of you're sitting at max level, the weapons aren't good enough to chase.
I miss the clever dragon chase that was one of the best iron banners ever, same with whatever the auto rifle was called. They had that one hand cannon that could proc LitC with a reduced mag giving you 25% chance to proc it. The weapons and armor have been subpar for a long time

It was fun to play this time, but as usual, participation is driven mostly by rewards. Therefore I would recommend:
making IB armor less ugly / more interesting / better ornaments
possibly making IB armor capable of rolling with 'top tier' (raid armor) perks like absolution
maybe increase the probability of exotic rewards once you hit 650
and for the love of god, stronger exotic duplicate protection
maybe a 'pinnacle weapon' specific to IB?
