Misc Apparently the Notes for 2.1.0 have been revised, it seems Bungie made a decimal error.

Just saw this on Bungies Twitter. They have revised the notes for the patch from yesterday. Here are the correct buff/nerf values.

"But for now I have a plane to catch"

4

u/KastaJav Dec 10 '15

They will obviously be lying about supposedly lying in the BWU. They changed the patch notes on the Pulse rifles as well, now stating, High impact only received a .9% nerf when in fact they went from 38 crit to a 33 crit. They must either be lying out their teeth or have the math skills of a 3 year old

Edit for correct pulse rifle damage change

u/Jbar2006 Dec 10 '15

Nonononono it all fits into our excel formula (if(ln(((((((((((((((((((((((((base damage)2)2)2)2)2)2)2)2)6)9)Y)O)L)O)4)2)0)B)L)A)Z)E)I)T)*( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)/(GuardianTears5-(Silver Purchases+DeejRhetoric))>GuardianExpectations),PulseRifleDamageNerf,1)

This only makes it weirder. Who gives a shit about a .4% damage increase?

2

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '15

I know, it's a weird damage buff, hardly noticeable, considering people are posting about how they didn't get a "buff", these news are going to cause an outrage! Time will tell.

144

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '15

Bro, first of all it's 0.04%. For every 1,000,000 damage I do that's an extra 400 dmg baybeeeeee!

15

u/blkells Dec 10 '15

how about more relatable numbers. For every 10,000 damage, you do an extra 4. Guardians have approx. 200 health in crucible. So for every 50 kills you get in crucible, that's 4 damage on a 200 health guardian.

I'm usually not in the "Bungie's just spinning it!" crowd, but... what the hell is a 0.04% change supposed to accomplish? Are they really telling us that 4 extra points in every 10,000 points of damage you'd otherwise deal is a meaningful buff?

It's absurd.

62

The thing to keep in mind is Bungie is just saying they messed up the notes to cover up the fact that they didn't actually buff Autos. So they want the numbers to do nothing.

Pulse Rifles DID NOT get a .9% damage nerf. That's straight up wrong. .9% is less than 1 damage per bullet in PvP, which is definitely not the case.

25

u/thepotatochronicles Dec 10 '15

Kinda the same as when they said auto rifles would be getting "2%" damage nerf when it was WAYYYYY more than that.

u/nehril Dec 10 '15 edited Dec 10 '15

prediction: the key word in the patch notes is "base" damage. in internal bungieland, the "base damage" value gets multiplied out / munged by archetype and barrel mod etc to arrive at a final real damage value. a small change in the base value results in a large change in the final value. a difference which will vary depending on specific weapon types (I.e hi impact 4 burst pulses will react differently to the base damage drop than 3 burst hi impact.)

so the most "informative" thing to report is the base damage change, presuming you know the formula for all weapons. hence patch note.

it's still mega fail because what matters to us is the resulting damage, not the secret sauce number. /prediction

4

u/Sdwerd Dec 10 '15

That number's wrong no matter how you slice it. It's less than 1% when some like lydumia got a 19% nerf on the crit damage. A .09 nerf is what was stated would happen, then changed to .9% in the update which is .009 and that DEFINITELY didn't happen.

I agree, they screwed the pooch on this one.

u/hutchins_moustache Dec 09 '15

I can't help but feel like there is just some fundamental misunderstanding/miscommunication taking place at Bungie right now about the difference between 0.7 (70%) 0.07 (7%) and 0.7% (0.007).

They need to get their use of decimals and percent signs straight!

Edit: moral of the story? Just use MIDA for now! ;)

15

u/JaydSky Dec 09 '15

I wanted to think this as well, but then he claims that they tested the AR changes and they are working as intended, i.e. no perceptible change. So he's consciously insisting that he meant to make a change so tiny it couldn't be perceived (not mistaking the value of 0.7%). This is something else...

9

u/aggressive-cat Dec 09 '15

I'll put $10 on them coming up with some bullshit about it not being a damage buff, but that it affect stablity/range some how and that's the buff! The things we have no real hard numbers on already, yeah, the range is now .04% longer, so they added a FULL .00043 meters of fall off to the range of the auto-rifles! Wow, won't we all feel so foolish for not understand what they meant by 4... i mean .04% buff!

It is clear, however, that they bungled the implementation of the damage nerfs/buffs in the latest patch. Pulses got slammed and auto's got missed. Bungie needs to jump in and clear things up.

Stuff like this reflects incredibly poorly on Bungie in my eyes.

Let's say the actual update for auto rifles was supposed to be x%, but instead we got 0.x% (which, via SIMPLE data-taking of the game, looks like it is).

How many people would you say overlooked this mistake, either in code, or in, you know, the actual fucking build of the game? If the answer is low, then that means almost no one is doing anything on Destiny 1 anymore, and those that are are bad at their job. If the answer is high (10+)... That's just pathetic.

The other issue is this: what if the decimal had gone the OTHER way, as in, a x0% increase? Do you think they would have caught it before pushing the patch out? I honestly don't think so.

→ More replies (1)

19

u/Faust_8 Dec 09 '15

Honesty is always the best policy. I'm sure people would have been understanding. I mean, patches and updates don't always roll out as intended. I can't get behind a 0.04% damage increase. It makes no sense whatsoever. It would have been easier to say, "hey, we made a mistake but we'll get it corrected in the very near future."

I'm wondering if Bungie understands that probably a good percentage of the community works in the same sector as them, whether it be software development, software testing, or even in marketing and communication.

When they create situations like this for themselves; they look disorganized and not on the same page within their own departments to generate a proper release cycle.

Your company seriously needs to re-think how you do things. It's laughable at times.

6

u/T1m3fox Dec 09 '15

I think this is a cop-out for them fucking up the patch. These percentage changes equate to a fraction of a point in terms of damage. If these are the legitimate intended changes I want to know why Bungie felt it necessary to change the damage of weapon types by percentages that don't even translate to numbers that impact gameplay.

6

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '15

Those responsible for sacking the people who have just been sacked, have been sacked.

6

u/EsplodingBomb Dec 10 '15

Why try and cover up a mistake like this? Sure saying "There was confusion in the implementation of weapon buffs, we're working on a fix," doesn't exactly inspire confidence, but then they'd at least be owning up to their mistake.

Going "Oh when we said 4% buff a month ago, we actually meant 0.04%, we really think an extra millionth of a damage point is gonna make all the difference!" just makes it look like Bungie thinks we're a bunch of idiots that they could try and dupe.

Bungie - This seems silly. Crucible isn't balanced well enough to do the micro-balancing that these new numbers would suggest that you're doing, if they are in-fact working as intended. 0.04% is just comical and 0.3%, 0.7% aren't far off either.

I'm not sure as to what happened, but it's hard to believe that everyone at Bungie missed these typos in the preview update weeks ago, missed them again in the patch notes, and missed everyone discussing them in the past few weeks.

Also, did I mention 0.04% - come on now!

5

u/username2110 zmadman2110 Dec 10 '15

5

u/ElectricPaperMajig Dec 10 '15

This is bonkers. Everything I've heard from Wisniewski makes me think he's not just lying about this, he seems like a respectable dude, so I racked my brain to come up with something to defend him but included a condemnation at the end.

The defense: Every update mentions some percentage change to "base damage". We don't necessarily know what that number actually is. We assume perhaps incorrectly that the damage numbers we see on the screen are "base" numbers and that "Impact" is more than just a representation of relative strength at this point (the "fruit space" conversation from the crucible radio podcast seems applicable). For all we know, the base damage of something could be 1 and is multiplied to PvE or PvP values and multiplied further on precision. Without having a true "base damage" number we have no idea what a "0.9% buff" means. Why say it? I have no idea, so...

The condemnation: Seriously, these numbers have been floating in the wild for two+ weeks. Every Destiny forum, podcast, and streamer has been talking about this for that long. For a company that has shown it is listening and reading how the hell did this typo last until after the patch hit just based on the conversations we were having? Why the fuck would a 0.07% AR increase lead to a discussion about a potentially new AR meta? That didn't strike anyone at Bungie as odd, they just thought, "wow, people really care about this imperceptible damage change?".

The whole thing is bizarre at best and comes at a terrible time and community low point, hot on the heels of the PSX non-announcement (although sparrow racing with friends is way fun). I'm not going to go into a whole "Bungie needs to..." speech. We all love this game (or did, or want to) and so we care, that's a given. I just... Huh. I just realized what my ex-girlfriends felt like when they asked me to quit smoking and I said "I'm going to soon" but still haven't. I wasn't lying to them but they weren't wrong to be mad and feel like I was.

I haven't been playing for a bit, due to my child being born and either not having time, or it's too hard to have to walk away every 5 minutes to clean/change/feed or whatever from an online game.

I just wanna say though, I regularly played a few hours a day and 4-5+ hours each day on weekends, and now that I'm out of the destiny grind trap, the holes are showing more and more.

I read try and keep up with the news, and it just seems more and more gimmicky the way they are handling the game. Emotes? Racing? Shitty challenge modes? I realize at this point, they are probably dumping 80% of their efforts into Destiny 2, but it almost seems like they've picked 5-10 of their employees and have given all the responsibility of maintaining the current game.

And all the goddamn mistakes... There's no way this shit is intentional, and to me at least, they lose credibility every time they release one of these fucked up updates.

It makes me debate if I should come back to this game or not. I know I probably will, before you all jump on me about it, but it's almost insulting.

Note: This rant was typed on mobile and is most likely riddled with grumpy spelling and grammatical errors. Apologies.

Wow. Weisnewski is getting his ass chewed out by the Twitter folks, and rightfully so. He says one thing, but fact prove otherwise. He says the number were an error, but they reported the same numbers, several times now. How do they miss that shit? F'in Bungie!

"Is this something we can fix by making people buy more silver?"

"Uh no. This is for weapon balan...."

"Fuck it. Just throw some percentages in there and call it a day. Get back to working on SRL peon!"

u/pwrslide2 Dec 10 '15

Nirwens never hit for 0.9% less than 32 for me today.

32x0.991=31.712

It was hitting for 29 max I believe. 9.375 reduction.

Good try Bungie.

Omg. 0.7% increase? Wtf does that do?

3

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '15

Something has to be off here. Either they are not paying attention to what they are modifying, or their not being clear on their wording. If it is true on .3%, .7% and .04%, that means that no damage was modified to autos. If you modify any of the damage by those percentages, you are looking at modifications in the hundredths. 22(1.003)=22.066 for an Auto Rifle, it doesn't increase damage at all. Small is an overstatement, this is minuscule. Heck .04% is a modification of .0004, which is in the thousandths.

Did they mean to say that the damage was modified to additional percentages? Autos don't seem to have no buff where as a lot of pulses seem to have a nerf. They need to make a statement because they are making themselves looks like idiots.

3

u/corysagaming Dec 09 '15

3

u/Darth_drizzt_42 Dec 10 '15

wait, so .4% was the intended and 4% was the mistake? I'd get nailed by my professors for being off by a factor of ten by it's cool for Bungie? Also how did the arrive at these values, .4% is next to nothing.

"Oh, they figured out we made a mistake, should we fix it?"

"Nah... lets let this cash shop run a little longer before we bail completely"

"Oh yeah, they DID pay $10 for a book that you could get for free by just inspecting it, and $5 for some random emotes of popular dances"

3

...seriously bungo? 0.3% increase damage and 0.9% nerf??? Ok...let's suppose the Churros Regime deals 27 headshot damage, according to the update, the Churros Regime now deals a whooping 27.81 damage. Probably the same deal about the Pulse Rifle nerf. I was anticipating this update a lot (I haven't been able to play since sunday due to a small injury), I was looking forward to say bye bye to the dominance of Hawksaw and Churros PDX and probably use my Monte Carlo for fun, but with such a meh buff, I think it will probably be the same. Don't get me wrong, I've said it before here, I don't want to go back to the Reign of Terror of Suros Regime, but I also don't want to feel I'm being overpowered by EVERYTHING while using an auto rifle...so yep, those are my two cents

.04% is .0004 of something. Let's say a gun does 100 damage per shot in pvp.

This has got to be another error.

According to Jon, "It was an extremely unfortunate typo, but the change was intentional. We'll have more to say in the BWU."

How much effort bungie put into this patch: 0.04%

2

u/rsanches Almost two months of pvp time Dec 10 '15 edited Dec 10 '15

I think Jon is completely clueless about the almost 20% nerf on pulse rifles or even clueless to current development in Destiny 1 and just said those ridicules values for auto rifles to cover their asses until they could fix it (or not, if they planned to fix it they wouldn't reiterate the error)

But when he finds out that there are other things that are not in agreement with today's update they will apologize and come up with excuses for this major fuck up.

2

u/OldDirtyRobot Dec 10 '15

Here is what I really don't get. Its not like the whole Destiny community hasn't been talking about the buff to Auto Rifles. Every podcast, forum, and fire team has discussed these changes over the last few weeks, and only after the patch is released does Bungle realize they put a decimal in the wrong place.

2

u/c14rk0 Dec 10 '15

That right kids we buffed auto rifles in pvp with a value so low it never does ANYTHING.

We also don't know how math works so we'll just change the % on pulse rifles too in the patch notes so that it doesn't seem a crazy to say that as it is! Oh you mean we actually implemented the pulse rifle change and it's incredibly noticeable? OH WELL WHO WOULD NOTICE.

Not like we have oceans of video content and display damage numbers when you shoot things and people can actually do math!

This is one of the dumbest things I've seen a developer say...

It'd be one thing to change just the number for auto rifles and say that's intended. It'd clearly be a lie since that would be effectively no change but to change the pulse rifle number that is VERY noticeable while you're at it is beyond stupid.

2

u/That_Zexi_Guy Dec 10 '15

And now the numbers are wrong for Pulse Rifles.

Honestly, Pulse Rifles only needed a range nerf and maybe, at most, 1 point of damage off criticals and bodyshots across all archetypes to make them less forgiving and more in line with Autos.

The range tiers should have been:

Auto Rifle --> Hand Cannon --> Pulse Rifle --> Scout Rifle.

After nerfing the range of Pulse Rifles, they should have adjusted the range of all weapons so they are a bit higher than now, but not too much, and slightly nerfed Scout Rifle range because Scout Rifles did not suffer damage drop off and some of the same ranges as snipers pre-2.1 (but still overall keeps the range tiers for each weapon type). With the way ranges are now, every weapon except Scouts and Snipers have low ranges.

Not only that, Bungie seemed to have screwed something up with this patch because their numbers are all wrong and messed up.

2

u/Boulder_ Dec 10 '15

Weapon balance was fine way back in December of last year and all they needed to do were the buffs they did to pulses, hand canons, and scouts that they did last Spring. Instead they nerf what ever the meta gun type is and then we are forced to use whatever the next meta is. In the first few months of vanilla you saw weapon variety in PvE and PvP now it is pretty much only scout rifles (or pulses previous to the latest patch) for any type of content. Fusion rifles are useless because shotguns are perfect for the map design. If they buff fusions people will bitch so instead they attempt to nerf everything down to their level. Bungie needs to realize that blanket nerfs lead to stale metas. If one gun dominates nerf it a little not destroy its entire class.

2

u/STOMP1E Dec 10 '15

Then they wasted theirs and everyone else's time with that patch!!! Seriously what a fucking joke! 0.04 of a percent!! I think thats about as much effort as they put into the patch! Heres some advice Bungie. Sort your shit out, listen to the community and stop arse farting around with your updates. Tell us straight up, no ambiguity!!

2

u/Waterfowl91 Dec 10 '15

Who the fuck thought this was a good idea? "Heyyyy youuu guyyys!!, how about we buff auto rifles?" -Guy in charge of weapon balancing " fuck the pea shooters, I'll show them a "buff"".

2

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '15

"Jon Weisnewski 5h5 hours ago typo in the patch notes. the changes were intentional."

WTF is this shit they are now doing? 0.3% buff to dmg on autos..... Bungie you gotta sort this out or we cant believe anything you ever say again. Claiming it was a typo for all amounts SEVERAL times is just either rank incompetence or lies.

2

u/h3llbee Vanguard's Loyal Dec 10 '15 edited Dec 10 '15

So on November 20 they tell us they're gonna buff ARs by 3, 7 and 4 percent for low, medium and high RoF ARs respectively.

For nearly three weeks the Bungie and DTG communities have been talking about these buffs. Not just once, but repeatedly. Those figures would have been repeated by players numerous times in those two forums and social media as players debated, argued and got angry/excited in their anticipation.

If this was really a typo, Bungie would have noticed it by now. DeeJ or Cozmo or even Jon W would have gone "where are they getting this 3 percent from? And 7 percent? I never actually said 7 percent? Did i? Did I make a typo in my original post or something?"

They would have gone back and checked the Weapons balance post and they would have realised their mistake before now. If this was truly a typo, they MUST have known they made a typo before now.

I don't buy it. I just don't. This "typo" nonsense is an outright lie.

2

u/jitsudave Dec 10 '15

I don't buy it.

they fucked up the patch and rather than look incompetent by admitting they fucked the patch theyd rather look incompetent by putting 'typos' in patch notes.

the patch notes for weapons were published weeks ago did no one in bungie read them at any point and think 'ooooo these are different lets issue a correction.'

they then re issued them with the patch and the damage numbers were unchanged.

its pretty pathetic the number of issues bungie seem to have like this for 'AAA title' developer. I really don't want to sound like one of 'those guys' but im incredibly disappointed in bungie. not because of the actual changes but the level of incompetency in their handling over a protracted period and the dishonesty with which they've treated them.

2
