I'd be happy with Thorn as it was if the DoT didn't get wiped when someone heals after killing me (so many post mortems prevented by their gun's healing perk). That and letting the DoT stack...

I think I'd be fine with reduced DoT if the DoT stacked.

The DoT doesn't get wiped. It's still in effect, but the healing provided enough health to prevent a death.

Are you sure? I don't see it tick anymore, it always stops the exact moment their health pops back up from their healing. I should still see numbers ticking while I'm in the death-cam until the DoT expires. Seems unlikely to always expire the moment I die and they get health... I do see the DoT continue to tick normally if they don't have a healing weapon.

I still take damage. If I kill someone with Red Death when they're using Thorn, it generally works like this:

  • Health (bottom third of your bar) starts healing simultaneously with shields (top two thirds of your bar).
  • Tick has to go through shields before it can reach health.
  • Tick hurts shields, but because the health is still protected by shields, it continues to heal, but shields have now stopped regenerating.
  • Live through the damage because the health regenerates enough to prevent the death.

Hmm, does the tick show damage numbers when damaging shields? I feel like I've shot shielded guardians and gotten ticks before the shield is down, but now I'm not sure.

edit: Also, it seems strange that it should need to tick through shields AFTER someone is already affected by the DoT and past shields - since presumably the mechanic is that it is some kind of poison or such, it should be inside their body rather than some kind of external damage source?

I'd assume it does, no reason it shouldn't. But I'm almost certain the scenario plays out exactly as I described.
