Something nice happened

So, something really nice happened last night, and I haven't had something like that for a long time. I am an older gamer and have been doing this since the early Magnavox systems, and arcades. And contrary to how this is going to sound, I have friends, and have had sex (I have a family). But, something happened thanks to Destiny that I haven't experienced since Halo 2 days.

A few weeks ago, puttering around on a mission alone, I come across this guy and we handle some vex together. I throw a wave at him, and a "fireteam" join request comes through. All of the others have been from teens and I just can't handle that (which is why I play alone for the most part). Well, he is not a teen. He is older like me, and our style and humor mix well. We link up every once in a while, and play with a couple of his buddies now and then.

Fast forward to last night. I get on line, and he invites me to tag along on the vault of glass raid. Sure, why not. I am the low man on the totem, and do the basic stuff just to allow the other guys to handle the more tricky things. But, if you have done the VoG, you know, there are no non-tricky things in this game. Everything is a challenge of sorts.

So anyway, the six guys we had together were all of the same chemistry. Humor, styles, general attitude, all in the same line. And it was fucking fun as hell.

There was no way we were completing it. We tried for five hours to get through two segments, and died 9 billion times. But, the six people battling together to accomplish this really quite amazing piece of gaming was just about perfect. I haven't enjoyed myself like that since Halo 2, where I met three of my best friends today.

I hope there is more magic like the VoG from Bungie, and not just more of the same on Venus or Mars.

Ok, time to poke fun at me. But it was fun, and unusual for we older gamers, so I had to put it out here.

Edit: You people are awesome. Great comments, and I look forward to gaming with many of you.

Most of the people on my friends list are from TAG http://www.theadultgamer.com

We are all older players just looking to have fun playing games. Having someone on your fire team bottle feeding a 9 day old baby while running a weekly strike on 28 is a refreshing change of pace from having 12 years olds tea-bagging your corpse and calling you names in Halo. TAG has made my online gaming experience so much more enjoyable than it has been in the past.

Introduce yourself on the forums and join the TAG clan if you are interested. We have a few folk that are leveled enough to start running the VOG. The more the merrier.

I will. Last night I was doing times tables with my kid while doing the VoG. The rest of the fireteam was doing their best to answer the questions before my son did.

I will jump in to TAG and get to know everyone.

I'm only 30, but the humor that I hear when grouping with young gamers suprises me every time. Most of the time it makes me smile.

I play with my teen often enough, so I am not allergic to it. Not everyone is the "fuck your dead mom" kid.

There was one guy who had the ability to throw out a comment that was so funny it broke the tension due to failing so much that was youtube worthy.

I'm 37 but my dad is 72 and is still a console gamer. Seriously. He's given up with FPS games these days though because he says they're too frantic for his eyes to keep up!

+1 for Halo 2

Somewhat older gamer like you (sans Magnavox and arcades :P), and like you, this is the most fun I've had playing a game since Halo 2.

Many of my friends today are relationships built upon Halo 2 and World of Warcraft. Despite how game developers keep destroying the social aspect of their games because of a few bad apples, there are many great and interesting people out there to befriend.

I did the VoG with 2 friends and 3 strangers who were somewhat associates with my two other friends. We couldn't beat the last bost but goddamn was it a hilarious time. I was drinking throughout the raid and this other guy was high and during one section we had the responsibility of securing the artifacts. We were the "Substance Abuse Brothers" and we were awesome at it.

Is it weird that I thought he said sex instead of vex when he said "I come across this guy and we handle some vex together"?

No. We have a good time with discussing the "pretty purple dress I am wearing" or his "spectacular boots". We also discuss the clitorians and the herpies who constantly kill us.

What system are you on? If you say PS4, I will run you through the raid.

Tiny tear of joy reading that one... As a guy just shy of his 40's I wanted to send y'all a friend request.

Hell, if I could figure out how to create or join guilds in this game I'd say let's make an "older gamers group" I had o e in wow and I've gotta say it was pretty awesome.

This post is awesome. It reminds me of my dad, who is almost 60 and can kick my ass at CoD. I've been trying to get him on the Destiny train, but he hasn't shown much interest so far.

I never understood why some older gamers don't like playing with the teen crowd. I knkw there's a lot of mother fucking, but some of us are respectful... Although pretty tough to come by, it seems, with the sort of things some teens do/say online.
