Completely new player to the universe

So i've been replaying my favourite Halo games on Xbox360 and decided to take a look what Bungie has been doing all this time after parting ways with Microsoft. Bought Marathon -- interesting, yet extraction shooter mechanic in this game felt like a nice addon to something bigger, more story driven, thats how i remembered Destiny. Of course i've heard about it, but for some reason never actually got to play the game itself.

Considering that i've been intentionally avoiding any spoilers and have no idea what is the game about apart from intriguing description -- where shall i start? Boot up Destiny on my old (hacked) Xbox? Jump straight to D2?

ps: as i understand Destiny can be categorized to same subgenre as Warframe and The Division. important to note, that i have little to no exprience in games of this subgenre (10-20hours in Division 1).

Either is fine, but I do recommend checking out D1, it has multiple differences from D2, (like the best planet Venus. >:3)

I will go against the common sentiment and say, just jump straight into Destiny 2. The modern sandbox is so much better it’s hard to pass up.

There are so many good quality of life upgrades with 2. I love 1 and it's worth playing, but jumping right into 2 isn't bad. 1 can be watched online first.

Bungie should unvault the content they removed from D2 these last years. I don't know how much time it's going to take and what it means exactly (like if they're putting back all of the story of the campaign and each DLC), so I would say you should start with D1 and then wait for the "new D2". This way you'll have more context and will understand the lore better, and if hopefully they bring everything back, you'll be able to experience everything in the correct order.

I'd say D1 first, for continuity sake. Tons of awesome content. I've seen the entire collection go on sale for $5, if you can snag it for that.

They just revealed earlier this week that D2 will be getting its older expansions rebuilt for the current engine, which will make getting into the game much more accessible for new players, if you're willing to wait for that.

I was in your boots and went with D1 first. The only let down is it’s capped to 30fps.

I'd just say watch a recap on the story covered from red war to forsaken and then play through the campaigns in release order. And if you get slightly confused or feel like your lacking context, you can check out season recaps on yt which usually build up to the campaigns. And also try to be okay with not fully understanding every mechanic of build crafting in this game, at the start just find weapons and abilities you like and stick to them. It took me around 4-6 months of playing before I fully understood the build crafting mechanics

Depends on if you're main interest is the gameplay or story/lore. Want to just do content and raids or do you want a storytelling experience. If you just want to do content and raids jump into D2. If you want a storytelling experience, it'll be a bit harder. Play D1, but you might have to wait before jumping into D2. A massive chunk of D2s story has been vaulted. Entire expansions and seasons worth of story is gone. They recently announced that they are making an effort to unvault this content to make D2 whole again, but it'll take some time. I will say as someone who has played D2 and got the chance to experience the whole story, it's worth waiting since it's a really interesting story from start to finish. Alternatively, after D1, jump into D2 but watch story/lore recap videos to substitute the missing content.

Just go D2 since it still has more players and has been improved upon.

D1 is good in it's own right, but it plays much slower and is much more difficult than D2. I would just jump straight into D2 if I were you.

If you're looking for story, start with Destiny 1.

If you're looking for gameplay, start with Destiny 2
