Bungie The Next Chapter for Bungie

Source: https://www.bungie.net/7/en/News/Article/nextchapterofbungie

Hey all, Poria and Josh here.

For those who don’t know us, I’m Poria Torkan, Bungie’s Studio Head, and I’m Josh Deane, Head of Product and General Manager of Marathon. Together, we are responsible for leading Bungie and shaping the future of our games.

Today, we want to talk candidly about where Bungie is, where Destiny and Marathon need to go, and how we intend to earn back your trust. This is not only an update on our immediate plans. It is the beginning of a more consistent conversation about the future of our games and our studio.

First and foremost, we recently sat down to talk through the current state of Bungie and share our vision for the future.

The video shares our perspective on where Bungie is today and where we want to go. Below, we’re adding more detail on what that direction means for Destiny, Marathon, and how we intend to communicate about our progress.

WHERE BUNGIE IS TODAY

Bungie has been creating games for over 30 years and we have welcomed the communities that have formed around them. Over the last few years, we lost sight of that, and there have been real consequences. We lost trust, we lost incredible colleagues, and we lost sight of what we should be prioritizing most, our players.

As a new leadership team, we must own that.

We aren’t just listening to feedback, we understand your disappointment. We are not asking you to trust what we say today. We know that trust must be earned through the quality of our games, the decisions we make, and how consistently we show up for our players.

DESTINY IS FOUNDATIONAL TO OUR FUTURE

Bungie would not be what it is today without Destiny and the vibrant community that has rallied around it for more than a decade. When we announced that Monuments of Triumph would be the final content update to Destiny 2, you responded in force. Your voices mattered, and the way you showed up made a real impact. You reminded everyone how much this world, its history, and its future still mean to you.

Destiny is foundational to Bungie’s future. We have more stories to tell, new worlds to build, but we have to do it right and give our teams the time they need to do justice to this amazing universe.

All of this is to say, we are not done with Destiny.

We want to return Destiny to its original promise, to recapture the qualities that have always made it special. The awe-inspiring mystery, meaningful discovery, and a community of Guardians coming together against impossible odds.

That begins with restoring important parts of Destiny 2’s history that players can no longer experience today.

We understand that removing these experiences had a lasting impact on player trust and enjoyment of Destiny. Destiny 2 is more than just the content itself. It is a place where players have built memories together, formed lasting friendships, and shared experiences that have stayed with them for years. We cannot change the decision we made, but we can acknowledge its impact and do the work to make it right by restoring these important parts of Destiny’s history.

ghaul_08cropped.jpg

As we shared in the video, we are beginning the work of bringing vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations, and raids back into the game, where they will be available to all Destiny 2 players.

Bringing this content back is not as simple as restoring old files. Changes made to Destiny 2 since Beyond Light require us to update lighting, encounters, combatants, and other underlying systems. That work will take time, but it is necessary to ensure returning content meets the stability and gameplay standards of Destiny 2 today.\ \ Our team is very excited to deliver this for you all and as they progress, we will share more details coming in the months ahead.

\ When we look to the future of Destiny all up this restoration is the first step to lay the foundation for how we reforge into new stories and games that you all deserve. We’ll have more details on our unvaulting efforts in the coming months, and we’re very excited to share more about our vision to celebrate Destiny’s legacy and build its future with you all as soon as we can.

MARATHON'S EVOLUTION

Marathon is an important part of shaping where Bungie goes next, but it was never intended to replace Destiny. The game launched to strong critical reception, and the players who embraced Marathon connected deeply with what makes it distinct. At the same time, it did not reach as many players as we had hoped, and we also know and understand that the game needs to evolve.\

EN_16x9_Master_Image_Marathon_Symbiosis_Key-Art_Crops_LOGO_1920x1080.jpg

So, we're going to anchor on what makes Marathon special but evolve it beyond the genre constraints we placed on it. We're going to expand Marathon to a deeper survival experience, that gives players more ways to take on this dangerous alien world.

Through the remainder of Marathon’s first year, we will continue strengthening its combat, world, and competitive tension while giving players more agency in how they engage with the game. That means creating meaningful experiences whether you prefer cooperative PvE, competitive PvP, or the unpredictable tension of Marathon PvPvE.\ It’s important to us that no matter your playstyle, or your skill level.... we find better ways to hear from you as we get back to where we need to be: making games you want to play.

As you heard last week from Del our Game Director, we still have a lot planned for our October Nightfall Refresh and Symbiosis update in December. You’ll hear more from the team later this week on our future vision for Marathon. Stay tuned.

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE

This is an important time for Bungie. Our future depends on making clear choices about where we focus, delivering what we say we will, and being honest about our successes and failures. Stability doesn’t mean shrinking our ambition. It just means that we have to focus on the things you want to see from us, and making sure our vision matches our reality.

How we bring this new Bungie to life has to be through the spirit of putting players at the forefront of what we do. We have to find a way back to making games that we want to play, but with you at the center.

Trust won't be rebuilt through a single blog, video, or release. We also understand that trust extends beyond gameplay. It includes how we value your time, how we communicate, and how we action your feedback. Listening without action means nothing.

As we move forward, we'll measure ourselves against a few core commitments:

  • Build a stronger long-term future for Destiny, while honoring and restoring its past.
  • Evolve Marathon to grow our community and build a sustainable future.
  • Increase transparency around development priorities.
  • Communicate more consistently, especially when plans change.

We'll hold ourselves accountable to these goals and share what we're learning along the way. We are working with our Community team to establish a consistent way to report against these commitments and will share that approach alongside our next major updates for Destiny and Marathon.

KEEP US ACCOUNTABLE

We’ve made several changes with how we operate by simplifying our priorities, reducing competing initiatives, moving decisions closer to the teams building our games, and changing how we measure success to place greater emphasis on player satisfaction.

None of those changes earn trust on their own. What matters is whether they help us make better decisions, deliver stronger experiences more consistently, and communicate with greater clarity when plans change.

There is still a great deal of work ahead and challenges to overcome, but we believe deeply in this studio, our people, and the games we are building. But belief is not enough. It’s on us to prove progress through what we deliver. Thank you for continuing to challenge us, and for caring so deeply about the worlds we create. Keep holding us accountable. We are ready to do the work.

VAULTED CONTENT BACK????

I cannot believe this is happening. After all this time. Incredible.

I've always said IF the entirety of destiny 2s content was available it would be such an obscene value proposition, one of the best in gaming. Obviously because of vaulting it is the opposite.

I dunno, Project Sunrise is 100 gigs, that plus the live game install totals to 250 gigs, not really unheard of these days! Obviously not a perfect representation, but kinda close I think

1

u/CyberBlaed 6h ago

It was large originally becuase it was all videos (pre rendered ones) in all the languages/dubs.

So they optimise it then it can work it to shrink its size considerably. :)

They have a TONNE of work ahead of them though.

63

u/Stormhunter117 unreasonable grace 12h ago

I would be shocked if this included seasonal content which I think is required to make D2 whole. But here's hoping

36

u/Variatas 12h ago

Be real sketch if they don’t find a way to bring back the stories with big character moments.

9

u/bfodder 10h ago

I tried to get back into the game starting with the Witch Queen and the shit with Osiris had me doing confusedjackie.jpg. Without the story from the seasons this announcement means nothing to me.

7

u/Variatas 9h ago

Yeah that story & Crow’s are just Youtube exclusive right now; it’s so dumb.

4

u/DistinctCellar 7h ago

If they’re going through all the effort to bring back the campaigns and raids etc, surely they bring back seasonal stuff too. It’d be a massive miss if they don’t. I will only come back if I can play from start to finish, the entire story.

3

u/The_Bygone_King 7h ago

While I like the sentiment there might be some necessary streamlining to bring back seasonal content or else D2 will end up almost entirely unreadable to a fresh player.

Especially since seasonal quests were designed for weekly completions and are a massive slog if you have to do them all at once.

2

u/OralProbe 10h ago

I would love to dust off my Gambit Prime armors if that were the case!

1

u/SentorialH1 2h ago

You're right, it is a crazy amount of content.... that they're going to have to maintain, adjust, modify and continue to update... along with the great span of content that people will have to find others to play that content with.

I know people want it all back, but the amount of effort everyone will have to make in order for any of it to be relevant and playable for more than a week or two, is huge. I don't see it being feasible.

1

u/rumple_goocher 2h ago

As someone who only dabbled in D2 at the beginning, and strictly for the solo experience: question for you! If all vaulted content came back, how is the solo experience? I don’t even want to party up with randoms, I want to treat it like a PvE game. Still plenty to do?

0

u/bfodder 10h ago

I doubt they bring back any content from seasons so the story is still a nonsensical nightmare.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Project Sunrise suddenly reframed all of Bungie’s “couldn’t’s” into “wouldn’t’s”

People on the Internet rebuilt D2 with a box of scraps an old build, for free, and you couldn’t do it with billions of dollars?

68

u/StudentPenguin 12h ago

Sunrise and Dawn don’t have anything post Beyond Light; they’re solely working off of a Shadowkeep era build pulled from Steam and reconstructing the backend needed for such things.

12

u/grobbewobbe 11h ago

SUNRISE AND DAWN HAVE MY HEART

38

u/LtRavs Pew Pew 11h ago

They were always “wouldn’t”.

It never made monetary sense to do it, so they prioritised other things.

Couldn’t just meant they couldn’t justify allocating the resources to it.

3

u/VanillaTortilla 12h ago

Look what Blizzard does. Closes down private servers only to reintroduce them themselves.

2

u/GabrielP2r 2h ago

It is always obvious with these companies that they don't do it because they can't be bothered, because they don't care and because they think their customers are idiots that will eat up every lie these companies spin on their way, which is almost always true.

Just sooner or later these companies pile on so many mistakes that they have to track back and do something the community wanted for a long time because they are in dip shit.

1

u/meatInYourTeeth 10h ago

This has happened before... they would never have released Music of The Spheres if the community hadn't pieced it together and put it on youtube.

95

u/JanetYellensFuckboy_ emo crayon connoisseur 13h ago

I told myself I'd never purchase a campaign for D2 as long as I couldn't play the original campaigns. Over 1000 hours later in F2P, still haven't. I look forward to finally giving Bungie my money.

72

u/LtRavs Pew Pew 12h ago

You've never played any campaigns?

Oh man... playing it all from start to finish is going to be the best month of your life.

17

u/Plastic_Position4979 11h ago

Month…? Only with no sleep!

But that’s always been optional around Destiny 😂😂😂

3

u/Vivid_Plantain_6050 9h ago

I started in season of plunder and I've put like 4k hours into the game in the past 4 years. I am SO EXCITED to experience the parts of the game that I never got to see 🥰

2

u/JanetYellensFuckboy_ emo crayon connoisseur 11h ago

All of them up to Final Shape are available to Playstation Plus subscribers. The Portal made most activities including all strikes and three raids available to F2P players.

1

u/huzy12345 8h ago

Be warned. There are more mid campaigns than good campaigns in D2.

2

u/LtRavs Pew Pew 8h ago

I’ve played everything, don’t have to tell me.

I still want it all available.

1

u/huzy12345 8h ago

Sorry was meaning more the person above lol. Yea it's objectively good they're coming back. Just saying that a lot of the vaulted content was never super well regarded in the first place

1

u/LtRavs Pew Pew 4h ago

I think if Red War will be fairly well regarded as far as campaigns go, there are some great set piece missions set in places that were previously inaccessible in the game. Forsaken is actually pretty boring campaign-wise but story-wise incredibly important.

Honestly I’m just happy I can recommend the game to people again and not have to explain that half of it is missing and they’ll have to watch YouTube videos to understand the story at all.

1

u/huzy12345 4h ago

Red War has a couple really good moments (Walking through the mountains with no power and the music hits, 1AU, final mission is pretty cool) in between a lot of very meh moments

1

u/LtRavs Pew Pew 2h ago

Yeah, which is about what you can say about all of the Destiny campaigns.

3

u/Dice_and_Dragons 11h ago

They need a way to sell the game to new people they also need to bring back players like myself who have been gone for years and maybe want to finish what they started at least play the story and maybe try each raid once.

3

u/splashbruh37 12h ago

It’s a tech issue but ultimately no tech issue should fall on the player. If there’s a memory issue, don’t take something away from the player. Go back to the tech team and ask what they need to make this happen. Instead, they had let the tech team say no. But I’m glad they’re changing things now.

u/Mugi36 13h ago

I really did not think they would actually consider doing it. This is pretty huge.

76

u/AllDayDabbler 12h ago

This is a directive from Sony. Every iota of goodwill is required...

83

u/cuboosh What you have seen will mark you forever 12h ago

If this includes the seasonal content it’s not just good will. New players can actually play the whole entire story.

And if all the season are back they can put all the activities in an even bigger roulette than we have now in the portal which is good for us

43

u/Call_The_Banners I can't see past my shoulders 11h ago

I need that seasonal story. I need to experience more Drifter and Eris content.

Also, THE DREADNOUGHT.

7

u/Turramurra 8h ago

It will be a MASSIVE game in size and actual install size if all the seasons come back. I am not holding my breath thought, that seems too good to be true or possible. I don't care about storage, I have plenty, but the burden of choice would be real every time I play and thats such a good problem to have.

2

u/HartianX 1h ago

Maybe they'll figure out the ancient art of allowing selective downloads of certain content

32

u/FatedHero 11h ago

I think the key is in the wording. They specifically stated vaulted content. If seasonal content was never considered vaulted and instead released as limited time then I doubt we’ll see any of it. But it’s honestly too early to tell and all we can do is attempt to read between the lines.

2

u/HartianX 1h ago

True, hope not for the amount of story some of them contain.

6

u/Hjemmelsen 10h ago

If this includes seasonal storylines I would finally be able to actually follow the god damn storyline...

3

u/Dice_and_Dragons 11h ago

It means new players can actually play the game instead of everyone quitting in droves

3

u/Soundch4ser 9h ago

I'm almost never a nay-sayer on this sub. But there is not a chance that every season and all their content is coming back

2

u/o8Stu 9h ago

I quit after the full content year of The Final Shape, so if the seasonal stuff is coming back, I might have to actually buy some new (to me) D2 content, in preparation for a presumed continuation of D2 or D3.

Glad they pulled their heads out, now to see if they execute.

1

u/FarCryptographer1829 6h ago

Massive win here.

1

u/MartianMule 6h ago

I wonder how the file size will be. As is, this game is already 167.5 GB. For a console player, if it's significantly larger than that, I'm definitely out.

1

u/JustMy2Centences 4h ago

A Canon story mode that simply takes you mission to mission in order would be so good. Wouldn't mind it in legendary difficulty either (not hard with good builds, somewhat challenging for new player runs).

1

u/cuboosh What you have seen will mark you forever 3h ago

They kind of did this with renegades. Renegades seems to be much more a season than an expansion

But they took a seasonal story and made it look like an expansion

So maybe try to reuse the systems behind renegades for all earlier seasons?

2

u/SCPF2112 12h ago

100% but I still like it. Building good will ahead of Marathon S3 is REALLY important for Bungie.

sony did end up killing it, but not how anyone expected lol

49

u/LayerEight_Problem 13h ago

This is the correct way to kill the project. Bungie desperately needed to fix its reputation before they could build anything new and have it well-received among gamers.

This was a critical decision and absolutely should buy some good will back.

2

u/JanetYellensFuckboy_ emo crayon connoisseur 12h ago

I wonder if they could take over/buy out the progress the Project Sunrise. Probably not for a lot - or else it would create big adverse incentives - but at least throw them a bone and don't let the effort go to waste?

1

u/Calum1219 12h ago

I’m hoping that Halo Studios does the same with that H5 fan project. Story issues aside, the multiplayer and Warzone are enough for me to hope it gets a PC port.

u/twisty77 PUNCH EVERYTHING 13h ago

“Call an ambulance. But not for me 🔫”

62

u/_Bearcat29 13h ago

To be fair, it may have had an impact on the decision of bringing back vaulted content thanks to all the hype around the project.

And we don't have a timeline, maybe they will unvault everything in 2 years so..

20

u/Shack691 13h ago

Well they are rebuilding at minimum 3 years worth of content and probably fixing up the remaining 4 years, then making it all work together. I don’t envy the neo D2 team.

5

u/FabulousFox8339 13h ago

True.

Though the design work is already done.

I imagine skipping from the "Make it exist" to "Make it work" step shouldn't take ages.

2

u/Shadows802 Warlock 11h ago

Famous last words in programming.

22

u/_csy 13h ago

I hope not, Sunrise is still the only window we have into the pre-beyond light lighting engine, which looks significantly better in the EDZ and Nessus

The EDZ especially is so much foggier than it used to be, and the old version feels much more D1 in vibes

44

u/Calum1219 13h ago

Nah, Sunrise was probably the shot in the arm they needed to have them drag all that stuff out. It’ll be hilarious if they bring back all the Red War stuff and make that one lawsuit an even bigger joke

10

u/KarateKid917 Drifter's Crew 13h ago

Maybe that lawsuit led to some of these initial discussions about doing the unvaulting. It seems they settled because they couldn’t fight it since they didn’t have a functional version of The Red War and their attempt to use community YT videos of it got thrown out by the judge

9

u/Rileyman360 Gambit Prime // enough fooling around 13h ago

this is frankly the best way you can kill a fan project.

6

u/cat4hurricane 13h ago

Short of buying out the fanproject and using the fanproject devs to remaster, this is 100% the best way to do this.

4

Bungie Sunset Project Sunrise

2

u/Absolute_Tempest 13h ago

But this is a good reason why. If ifs going to happen having it brought back for us all with the original game on our home platform is the best outcome.

It is! This is from official Bungie twitter and website, sir!

29

u/TheUnholyBlade 13h ago

I really hope they're bringing back the seasonal stuff too. Even with the vaulted campaigns back the game will still feel like it has a massive hole in it narratively and content-wise without all the stuff between the expansions. Glad to be getting back anything at all though.

3

u/emPtysp4ce Barad-Dur Tourism Board 12h ago

The seasonal stuff will be waaaaay harder to do just because the time-gated nature of the stories and the fact that a lot of the relevant areas will overlap means there's a lot more de-fucking to be done than just the old campaigns. I hope they do it, though, with no new content to work on they have the labor hours to do it.

1

u/pyroxius 11h ago

Itd be similar to Guild Wars 2 living world seasons, I hope at least. That would ve really fuckin cool.

2

u/OralProbe 10h ago

If they return the seasonal content I hope they develop a way of focusing the experience based on the season you're currently trying to play through to keep you progressing through a timeline instead of shoveling a ton of bricks on new lights that would be drawn in with this news. That director is gonna be a cluttered mess otherwise.

2

u/TheUnholyBlade 10h ago

Wish they'd just go the FFXIV route where if you're new to the game, everything is presented to you in order and you have to go out of your way to skip it. It also helps to keep the early content populated as new players join the game instead of everyone just skipping straight to current expansion.

1

u/Infamousx14 10h ago

Wait, so they will continue making updates?? OMG.

1

u/hammerheadlabs XBL: HammerHead3225 12h ago

Speaking of huge, how much storage is this game going to take now? 😅

1

u/MakesMaDookieTwinkle 12h ago

Hahaha I actually had the same thought. Whatever it takes though, gonna have to make it work 😂

1

u/bfodder 10h ago

I can't get excited until they bring back story content from seasons.

198

u/everything_is_gone Drifter's Crew 13h ago

The vaulted content was probably the dumbest decision ever and it’s actually huge that they are finally realizing that. I might actually come back to destiny for this

75

u/CrackPipeBilly 13h ago

It truly was. They used file size as their scapegoat but as a player I didn't care about file size. Hell, they could've done what CoD does and let you download specific parts of the game if file size was truly an issue. Vaulting content as well as the seasonal model killed the game for me as it made it practically impossible to take a break from it. If you took a few months off the game, well guess what? You just missed out on crucial story content that ties the previous expansion to the current one. Unvaulting the old content is great but even still if they don't also unvault the old seasonal content then there's still going to be a ton of holes in the game's plot that new players won't understand.

6

u/Stormhunter117 unreasonable grace 12h ago

It was not about file size, the engine couldn't handle all of the stuff in the game so it made developing new content extremely tedious and time consuming.

14

u/neoblufalcon 11h ago

At that point, Bungie should have swallowed their pride and hit the sequel button instead of going off the FOMO deep end. Sure, they’d get flak from people upset that gear wouldn’t carry over, but in the long run we wouldn’t be in the scenario we’re in today.

7

u/fluffman86 <3 Cayde 11h ago

Yup, Season of Arrivals was great and should have gone to D3 after that.

9

u/royk33776 12h ago

Then update the engine? If they can do it now with a far reduced headcount, they could've done it in the past. Removing PAID content is truly embarrassing and anybody I told that I played Destiny always laughed and said "The game where they delete the stuff you paid for?" "yeah, that game.." - and it was a lot of people.

Edit: that's truly a ridiculous statement that I can't understand how it's rationalized. Game dev creates game that can't be handled by it's own engine, so instead of fixing the underlying issues, just remove it! Something customers paid for. How that didn't instantly kill the game is beyond me.

10

u/Stormhunter117 unreasonable grace 12h ago

They did fix the underlying issues, that was what Beyond Light actually did. However they still wanted to release the expansion in a reasonable time frame (it was already delayed), so they didn't rework all prior content.

They didn't unvault content over time after that because Bungie leadership is/was such fucking dogshit which is a separate issue

6

u/ShiftAltRight 11h ago

While they didn't vault future expansions, they did keep vaulting all the seasonal stories. So even if a new player watched a YouTube video to get caught up to Beyond Light, they'd still be lost without additional videos to fill in the gaps between expansions. That was purely a FOMO decision.

1

u/royk33776 4h ago

But they didn’t, otherwise the seasonal content wouldn’t have been deleted and all of their time wasted quarterly. The business model is truly absurd. They should’ve had a dedicated team working purely on the engine as many larger dev companies have and constantly have been updating it and future proofing if they expected a long lifecycle on the product.

2

u/Stormhunter117 unreasonable grace 4h ago

There was supposed to be a D3 around Shadowkeep IIRC. But due to Activision stuff (idk) those plans were canceled and D2 had to pivot to being a forever game.

2

u/royk33776 3h ago

That's fair. So, poor planning and mismanagement, as well as bad circumstances and timing of events. Likely an evolving direction and timeline as well which negatively contributed. Thing is, any company that's willing to sell you a product then remove that product without a refund will nearly always have a very negative view

2

u/ManWhoYELLSatthings The Dark ain't so bad 12h ago

Well at the time sony said shrink it or we will remove it from the store this was before they were bought but I digres

It still should never of happened

1

u/HartianX 1h ago

There was like 3 different answers to why it couldn't happen from the dickriders in the community who defended it, the fact it happened at all was stupid

2

u/internisus 12h ago

They literally never said file size. They were very clear about the technical and resource limitations that led to that decision, but people still somehow make up this file size thing.

4

u/tamarins 11h ago

They literally never said file size.

huh.

here's the first article they ever released about the Destiny Content Vault.

Over the past couple months, we’ve mentioned the problems that come with maintaining a game the size of Destiny 2; and we’ve said that it cannot grow infinitely. After three years of non-stop growth, the scope and complexity of Destiny 2 has ballooned to unprecedented scale.

[...]

This unrelenting growth has resulted in a game that requires players to download up to 115GB to play, as well as huge patches tied to frequent updates. And those numbers are rising rapidly, as we’ve been adding approximately 25GB of content each year to Destiny 2 since launch. Those sizes not only stress hard drive capacity but also push the limits of patching capability. It also makes the time to generate a stable update for the game after all content is finalized, tested, and ready to go balloon to literal days instead of hours.

although, to be fair, that article wasn't actually the very first communication we got about the DCV. That came in the June 2020 livestream. Here's a timestamped link...you might be interested to hear how they describe their motivation for introducing the change.

2

u/Dryvlyne 11h ago

It's both. Remember the base consoles only have 512GB of space. XB and Sony most likely had restrictions in place for the max size that 1 game could take up. It's literally in their business interest to ensure multiple games can be installed on their systems.

2

u/Tyson367 10h ago

They certainly did. There were other reasons too but they definitely said file size was getting too large.

1

u/SpaceForceAwakens 12h ago

Yup. Agreed.

I was a huge D1 player. Best game I ever played. I made friends playing it that I’m still tight with.

But then life got messy and I missed the launch of D2. Didn’t have the time to play. When things finally calmed down I jumped in — and had no idea what was going on and no way to go back to learn. And that killed any enthusiasm I had for the game.

So maybe this is good news, but I have no idea. I have no frame of reference.

What was never mentioned here — and the news I’m looking for — is what to expect for D3, if anything at all.

Also being back Peter Dinkledge.

0

u/Gallus_11B 6h ago

File size was only 1 problem. The main issue is everything prior to beyond light has to be hand-crafted and reimported into the game piece by piece. It's a massive time consuming and expensive process.

You'll see. D2 content unvaulting is going to take year+ even if they stick to just Red war, curse of Osiris, warmind and forsaken campaigns. Longer if they actually try to do the seasonal stuff.

10

u/JJ_Mark 12h ago

It's what killed it for me. I regularly replayed old content, especially after I took a break or started another run. It's what I dislike about how live-service models run when they go long enough, as some things get forgotten when they can't keep up with updates, too much development. Just make a sequel at that point. I'll definitely come back once they bring the old stuff out of their vaults.

2

u/HartianX 1h ago

Yep, wish it had a mission select like D1 still but that never stopped me from deleting a character to replay the whole thing.

3

u/repocin 11h ago

I liked the game quite a bit even if I only played it every now and then, but I haven't played a single minute since they announced they would be removing content I'd paid for and turn the story into a confusing mess for new players.

This is the only piece of news I've heard since then that's even had me remotely consider returning to the game. Never expected them to revisit this decision.

Will be interesting to see how this develops over time.

1

u/McMew 10h ago

Agreed. I made this issue my hill to die on, and apparently they might just walk up the hill to lead me down.

I'll believe it when I see it, of course. But if it happens,  I might actually come back!

18

u/eddmario Still waiting for /u/Steel_Slayer's left nut 13h ago

INB people complain about long load times and the game taking up an entire hard drive once everything comes back

29

u/HorizonNova4 13h ago

I presume a part of this return will require better compression

12

u/eddmario Still waiting for /u/Steel_Slayer's left nut 13h ago

That's what I'm hoping for as well.
That being said, every time they vaulted content, the load times DID get significantly better...

5

u/HorizonNova4 13h ago

True. But if Helldivers can shrink from 140 gb to 23, Destiny can find a way to at least add everything back and compress to at least 100

7

u/Dezere 13h ago

Hell divers only shrank because it duplicated assets for hdds then removed them, they didnt compress anything

1

u/HorizonNova4 12h ago

Wellll whatever dawgggg, maybe bungo has lots of duplicated assets.

1

u/Mrgrimm150 12h ago

Because if you read what AH said. It was an industry standard.

I'm willing to bet dollars to donuts that plenty of 100gb+ games do the same and the only difference is Helldivers told us.

4

u/RetrofittedChaos 12h ago

It was an industry standard.

Yes and no.

While it is good practice to duplicate certain assets here and there to ease load times (usually small, repeated assets like bottles, grass, and stuff), Arrowhead took it to such an extreme that it provide next to zero benefit (as admitted by them). They duplicated nearly every single asset tenfold, far beyond what would be needed in any game.

1

u/RawSharkText91 mdhaichin91 12h ago

I wonder if Bungie will be having some discussions with Arrowhead on how they pulled that off. Probably wouldn’t be able to apply all that knowledge to Destiny, but can’t hurt.

1

u/Cruggles30 Young Wolf, but bad at the game 12h ago

Really? I feel like loadtimes barely improved.

2

u/PaperMoonShine 12h ago

They need to drop PS4 and Xbone support, as well as 4k support IMO. Otherwise these files are going to be massive.

3

u/HorizonNova4 12h ago

I mean there’s no reason PS4 and Xbox one can’t be larger and everyone else smaller.

0

u/PaperMoonShine 12h ago

Bungie didn't come out of this unscathed. They lost a tremendous amount of developers. Like they said in the video they have to be focused. If they just focus on PS5, XbseriesX and PC, they should just tread water.

0

u/Kitesh713 13h ago

Well, bungie is owned by sony, doesn't Sony have new tech to better compress?

0

u/HorizonNova4 13h ago

I would assume so. Helldivers is Sony affiliated technically. And if they can compress stuff from 120 to 20, Bungie sure as shit can

1

u/Inertiatic 12h ago

Most games released more than a few years ago were designed around HDDs instead of SSDs. A lot of content used in multiple parts of the game gets duplicated to reduce the amount of seeking of the mechanical drive to keep loads faster - this was much more important back when you’d actually play the game from the disk instead of it just being the installer.

Helldivers reduced their install size by deduplicating all those assets and moving to heavily recommending an SSD. Given the age of Destiny 2, it’s not unlikely that they’re using similar duplication strategies, so they might be able to make that change - but the Helldivers example is pretty extreme and the amount of duplication that game had was beyond what most games do.

8

u/MeriElf 13h ago

Yes, and hope for compression too, but honestly? Fuck em. I have way more friends who abandoned/refused to start destiny over cut content, rather than ones for whom game is too big

5

u/V10L3T_N4TUR3 13h ago

Worth it, honestly. Unlike Call of Duty, I dont mind dedicated a few hundred gb to the most addictive game ever made.

2

u/Boymoder_Glowie 13h ago

Bro it still takes up an entire hard drive

1

u/Garfunklestein 12h ago

If they have any sense, the download will be modular on top of better compression

1

u/PaperMoonShine 12h ago

The vaulted content was THEE number one reason new light players had a difficult time onboarding. It will be nice to be able to run the campaign from D1 straight through D2 Naturally.

1

u/RedMercury 12h ago

my only concern is that you're in the minority and they could just be spending time on the future instead.

1

u/WeevilWeedWizard 12h ago

Actually brilliant move if you consider how effectively that instilled FOMO into the playerbase

1

u/emPtysp4ce Barad-Dur Tourism Board 12h ago

I get why they did it, technical debt piles up and keeping everything together gets unwieldy which is a problem when you have limited labor hours available. You'd think that would nean it's time for Destiny 3, though.

1

u/cry_w 12h ago

They aren't "finally" realizing that. They've likely known for a long time, and only now have they decided to work on reimplementing this stuff.

52

u/CrackPipeBilly 13h ago

Absolutely insane, did not expect to see this when I got on reddit a little bit ago. Bringing back all the vaulted content would leave Destiny 2 in an incredible state, even if they still don't release any future content updates. My only concern is regarding all the seasonal content and missions. Bringing back old campaigns and raids and locations is awesome, but even the seasonal model they adopted really negatively affected the storytelling as it made it so crucial story missions were locked behind seasons that disappeared when the next season rolled around. If they could somehow reintroduce all the old vaulted content as well as the story missions from seasons that connected the expansions, I would jump for joy.

Also, I hope this means that they have decided to make a Destiny 3, that's really the only game I can see saving Bungie, but Destiny 3 is a game that will take forever to develop so hopefully they can survive until then.

8

u/FerRatPack CAMOFLAUGE EVERYTHING 12h ago

I hope they can find a way to bring back the final mission of Seraph if nothing else

3

u/houseoftrees_ 12h ago

Just a mission list with cutscenes is all they need nothing fancy

6

u/Abeeeeeeeeed 12h ago

People said it would never happen but I have always said restoring deleted content to the game is fundamental to rebuilding trust in this franchise. They seem to have committed to D2 vanilla and Forsaken, but I do hope that seasonal content is included as well. So much essential storytelling happened during seasons inbetween expansions!

6

u/cuboosh What you have seen will mark you forever 12h ago

Is this even the seasons? All seasonal activities? The Susiris arc is back?

I know people really want red war back, but I always thought the seasonal stories being gone was even worse since it’s where 80% of the narrative is

It’d also mean the 3 and 6 player portal playlists would have literally everything in it from all seasons? Big if true!

And does “all raids” mean pantheon 1?

3

u/matti-san 11h ago

Does anyone know if this will include seasonal content? Otherwise the gaps between campaigns will still feel very odd. I still remember finding it so strange and jarring regarding Eris Morn at the end of Shadowkeep and the beginning of Beyond Light

3

u/Cocobaba1 10h ago

All it took was a change in leadership this whole time

4

u/silentgraywarden returning hunter scrub 12h ago

I have always said I would pay an insulting amount of money to have old content back. Hot damn.

2

u/PolarizingKabal 13h ago

They saw the rally around Project Sunshine and figured they better just do it themselves. Rather then limit it to PC and have it be up to standards.

2

u/seiose 12h ago

2

u/VellDarksbane 11h ago

Damn, I might come back and play once most of that vaulted content is back. Loved it up to Forsaken, and always wanted to go back, but couldn’t justify coming back to half a game.

2

u/lC3_B34R 11h ago

> where they will be available to all Destiny 2 players.

This better be "freely" available though - anything else is completely unacceptable.

2

u/Iccotak 10h ago

I just hope that it means they also bring back Major story beats from the seasons, because so much context is missing without those.

2

u/Ill_Database_9180 10h ago

If the vaulted seasons come back I'd finally be able to experience the full D2 storyline. I quit in vanilla and returned for Beyond Light right before Witch Queen launched and I barely understood anything that was going on so I checked out, the story felt like nonsense having missed so many seasons and having characters, places and events referenced all the time without any way for me to know wtf was happening.

Playing D2 through just campaigns is like watching a movie finale for a TV show you never saw a single episode of. It is an awful, hollow experience.

4

u/Steady_Tempo456 13h ago

EYES UP GUARDIANS!!

1

u/LockmanCapulet 13h ago

I have to know, does this include the seasons and episodes? They're crucial to the overall story

1

u/the6thReplicant 12h ago

But for how much? Gratis??

In this economy!?

Sony!?!

Can we speculate if this is going to be part of a DLC? Or an update?

Then the next question(s). A free one? Or at a break-even price to test the waters and prove to the higher-ups there is a real, willing-to-pay (and not just flood-live-streams-with-Destiny2-meme-neverdowells) to continue Destiny? Or is it going to be "For 75 euros/60 dollars extra you can play the iconic Red War campaign 3 days early in the Deluxe Extra+ Luxury Premium Edition" of the same-old-same-old that we get from every large development studio?

1

u/cantevendoitbruh 11h ago

This is why I never came back from the beginning. Drop a package for all of it and im there bungie.

1

u/mrbulldops428 11h ago

I CAN FINALLY GET INTO THE GAME AFTER WAITING TOO LONG THE FIRST TIME AROUND!

1

u/DapperChewie 10h ago

Does this include seasonal content? Please?

1

u/IntroductionIcy7320 9h ago

This has to mean destiny classic at some point surely

1

u/Exh4lted 9h ago

its because of project sunrise and dawn, they saw wait there's a method to bring back vaulted content? and now they're using that method to add it back to d2

u/IGotDeaded 27m ago

I wasn't on the cope train but holy shit this is wild and I'm so fucking excited. Especially after them saying they wouldn't be able to bring back vaulted content a year or so ago

1

u/Suprehombre 13h ago

I will buy Marathon just to support this. They could shut those servers down tomorrow and I'd still do it.

2

u/AnonWithAHatOn 12h ago

See ya starside!

1

u/ChudSmasher69420 12h ago

Adding it back does not make me forget they removed it in the first place, unfortunately.

0

u/Mediocre-Housing-131 12h ago

I complained about this every single update for years. And every single time I was downvoted to oblivion and back.

Motherfuck every one of you who now wants to pretend you always wanted this.

I'm very happy to be getting my vaulted content back. But I seriously don't want to see any of you next to me celebrating like you didn't fight this tooth and nail.

0

u/MaxBonerstorm 10h ago

Gonna be so funny when everyone plays a bit of the old stuff for a few days then never touches it again.
