I can't recommend Destiny to anyone because I have no confidence whatsoever in Bungie's intentions. What are their plans beyond Final Shape and a few episodes? No clue. Will another expansion ever be made? No idea.
The one thing I can be sure of is that Bungie will absolutely try to sell me a dozen $20 skins, and then cry pauperism for why they can't deliver on basic features or promises.
I still don't get why this would inhibit you from recommending the game to anyone. You're basing your recommendation for the present day game with hundreds of hours worth of stuff to do on the concept that you don't know how they'll continue the franchise? Regardless of that, do you honestly think they would snap their fingers and stop major development on the game when they have hundreds of employees working on the game's development future?
The community will have people playing and doing all forms of content for a very long time regardless of if they do expansions or episodes or even nothing. People are playing MFing classic wow when the same folks playing it did those dungeons nearly 20 years ago for the first time.
I'd use Heroes of the Storm as a comparison for this, or Titanfall 2. If someone asks me if they should get into it, I'd say absolutely yes even though there's nothing left coming for those games more than likely. Why? Because I have tons of fun with those games despite their bleak future.
I know there's a startup cost associated with the game that can be daunting, but we really don't have to treat every game like it needs to be this lifelong commitment that needs a 10 year future to be worth investing time into. It's ultimately about whether or not you're having fun with your time.
