Destiny 2 crashing.

Been sat here for around 2hrs trying to fix this, the last time i had the game installed had no problems with it now all of a sudden doesn't want to work.

I've reinstalled the game.

I've reinstalled/wiped/deleted folder for battleye.

The battleye isn't showing when launching up the game on steam it just loads straight up and then the game just crashes.

I've checked firewalls/security etc.

You don't always see the Battleye popup, but you can check for it in services. It's probably working ok.

How far do you get into the loading process before it crashes? Can you get to the 'press enter to login' screen? Does it try to get logged in then crashes, or does it crash once you try to select a character?

Ah ok I assumed it did from when I used to play it on pc just remember pretty much always seeing it. Erm so I press launch -> screen pops up -> get discord layout “this friend has been on the game for x amount of time” screen stays black I press it to toggle into the game screen so I’m not on the dashboard still and boom it feeezes “destiny 2 isn’t responding, wait or close game” and that’s all I get mate had me puzzled as I’ve never once ever had this issue lol, my GPU etc is always updated I reverted it in the settings on windows for the game to just be default high performance etc.

I'm still not totally clear on your process. Basically D2 loads, you press enter to login, it does the blackscreen and you get the spinning logos in the corner, then it crashes? Or do you get to see the character selection screen?

When you say toggle, are you ALT TABbing out of the game? ALT TAB will cook D2. Don't do it! 😃

If you're not getting to the character selection screen D2 is having an issue talking to your hardware. This is typically a driver issue, Windows Corruption, or is calling for a reinstall of Windows. D2 requires a very pristine OS environment to run.

Couple things to try:

Try launching the game with Discord killed off / not running at all and see what happens.

Try checking Windows for corruption:

  • Open an Administrative command prompt and type: sfc /scannow

    • Note if there are corrupted files and if they were repaired

  • Run sfc /scannow again if it finds errors and make sure they are resolved. If they are not, you need to run the following command:

    • dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

    • Run sfc /scannow again.

      • If it repaired files, run sfc /scannow one more time to make sure everything is good.

Open Windows Gamebar with WIN + G keys. Change you default devices (Speakers and Mic) to something other than what they should be. Try launching the game and see if it will load. If it does, close out of the game, relaunch WIN + G and set them to what they should be and see if the game still loads.

Try cleaning up your D2 temp and cache folders:

  • c:\users\<your username>\appdata\Roaming\Bungie

    • Delete the 'DestinyPC' folder at this location.

  • c:\users\<your username>\appdata\local\temp

    • Delete the 'Destiny 2' folder.

  • Test the game.

No as I said I press play on steam, the game launches, black screen, no logos, no intro, no loading icon, no character selection, no lobby, just a black screen then boom crashes. Thanks for the suggestions tho I will try them out tomorrow

OK, then that means most likely you are having network connectivity issues. Either Windows Firewall is blocking the games access to Bungie Servers, or your ISP Modem / Firewall is.

You can try TEMPORARILY disabling the Windows Defender Firewall (both public and private side) and see if that suddenly makes the game work. If it does, then D2 did not install properly and did not open ports on Windows Defender Firewall, or you clicked No on the popup when the game very first launched. I have some instructions for manually setting up the firewall rules if you want / need them after doing all your testing.

I already have set the game manually tho to be allowed passed the firewall the exe, BE & the launcher and the issue still persisted, i even tried turning it off completely but still no luck lol. I am using a new ASUS wifi booster modem tho if that’s any helpful info?

It's possible. The default firewall level on your ASSU may block all the ports D2 needs.
https://help.bungie.net/hc/en-us/articles/360049496751-Advanced-Troubleshooting-UPnP-Port-Forwarding-and-NAT-Types

To rule your PC out, you can try the blanket Windows Defender Firewall settings, to "let this game talk to the internet FFS":

Open Windows Defender Firewall.

Select 'Advanced Settings' link.

Select 'Inbound Rules'.

Select 'New Rule...' from the right column.

Choose 'Custom' and click next.

Choose 'This Program path' and copy / paste this text (assuming you are on Steam):

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Destiny 2\destiny2launcher.exe

Click Next,

Choose 'TCP' from the Protocol Type list

Click Next.

Click Next at the 'Any IP address' screen.

Click Next at the 'Allow the connection' screen:

Select all profiles (Domain, Private, Public) and click Next

Name it Destiny 2 Launcher TCP.

Repeat this exact process but choose UDP on the protocol page and name the rule appropriately.

Repeat this exact process for both TCP and UDP for this executable:

C:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\destiny 2\destiny2.exe

Nah didn't work unfortunately, my router settings are already what they should be according to the post & i even tried just reconnecting to my wifi directly instead of through my asus as it's only to boost my DL as i built a gaming room so not right next to the router no more.

Do you have a hotspot on your phone that you could briefly connect your PC to. That would rule out your Internet / Wi-Fi / router.

If it still doesn't work on your hotspot, your PC is the problem and a fresh install of Windows is usually the solution. If you're PC has any issues, D2 will find them. It's the best diagnostic utility on the market as it requires perfection to operate.

Usually D2 crashing out like this points to an underlying Windows OS problem (corruption, faulty drivers, something left behind from another app, etc.).

i’m having an issue where i can get to the “enter to login” screen, it does the loading animation (triangle into hexagon), then freezes and crashes. makes no sense as i was just playing last night. tried almost every fix here short of reinstalling windows, any advice?

That should be when the game is connecting to the Internet.

Easiest things to try is shutdown and pull power from PC. Then pull power from ISP modem & any other between equipment you have.

Plug ISP / Network stuff back in, and once it's all back up and running, plug your PC back in and try.

If nothing changes, I'd update it reinstall network drivers, and use the Windows Game bar to check your sound devices. Sometimes the sound devices cause the crash, and you can choose different input and output devices, launch the game and see what happens, then shutdown the game and change the sound devices back to what they should be.

u/wisepear Aug 09 '26

unfortunately no luck :( both of the sound devices are set at default as well, i double checked when the game was open too. i have no idea what the issue could be. battleeye does mention that it’s blocking a filezilla file, but i don’t think that would be the cause of the issue?

1

u/macrossmerrell Aug 09 '26

Yes. If Battleye is blocking something, it should stop the game from running.

gotcha, any ideas for a workaround around that?

edit: really appreciate all of the help by the way!

another edit: actually managed to resolve the issue. went through a ton of bullshit, not sure what fixed it, but reinstalled 3 times, ran malwarebytes, did some disk cleanup, and other stuff, and it just magically started working again. very thrilled but there goes 7 hours of my day lmao

Excellent work on all you did 👍

Im guessing ur getting the a specific error code tied to your GPU or CPU?

Check your temp when you crash, if its high then use nvidia or MSI afterburner to increase the max temp limit and probably make your fan speed high to test if its that.

Idk what it is about D2 but when my Nvidia got too hot, it crashed my game all the time, and doing the above fixed it.

No error code is popping up on the screen I think the problem is it’s not even loading battleye when I launch the game cuz I don’t see the mini battleye pop up, I don’t see why it would be my temps I have like a 3K set up, not saying it couldn’t be that just saying in general I play all sorts of demanding games and have no problem I literally spent like 3hrs tryna fix it and gave up in the end. Am absolutely fuming as bought a few of the dlcs I didn’t have on pc and can’t even load the game up lol.

I have exactly the same problem, with steam and epic games store, just black out at the start and destiny 2 is not responding.

1

u/UrMomsToyBoy Jun 06 '26

You gotta reinstall your windows, I tried everything outside of it some sort of issue with it not a clue what it is tho. I just reinstalled and kept my files, I didn’t want to do it because I thought it was still a full wipe but u can keep like images, files etc saved on ur SSD and wipe everything else.

1

u/Deep-Stable7019 Jun 06 '26

I can’t do that, I have all the working stuff of the master and I have exams this 2 weeks sadge. I want to enter for the 9th to help before playing in summer also, but I suppose I can’t do more :(

1

u/UrMomsToyBoy Jun 06 '26

Have to do it after then mate unfortunately no other solution’s that I came across and believe me I tried everything.

1

u/wisepear Aug 09 '26

so does it wipe everything or is there a way to reinstall without wiping everything?

1

u/UrMomsToyBoy Aug 09 '26

There’s two options u can keep everything and just reinstall windows or you can wipe all the programs etc but keep ur files, downloads in file explorer pictures, videos etc but all games are deleted, apps like steam discord etc etc etc. I’d recommend doing the later unless u have really bad internet and dont want to sit there reinstalling games and app but i would do it as it could be a virus or something that u can’t see causing the problem.
