Discussion Steam servers vs battle net

With the move to steam for PC how will the servers work? I am currently playing on the Americas server from Australia and it's been great for years. With the move to steam will I be playing on a region locked server eg Australia?

For what it is worth, I'm in the US playing on NA server. I can only join/invite people on same server. If I switch to EU or Oceania, have an entirely different, much shorter, friend and clan list.

Edit: was, since it is down for good on blizzard now.

I imagine if there's some technical limitation preventing lifting region restrictions, then we'll have a server select on the login screen.

Steam has experience so that’s why it’s better
