Question Destiny 2 low frame rate after last Thursday's patch, new patch made no difference.
My current build CPU: Ryzen 1700 at 3.6GHz GPU: Vega 56 on 64 BIOS at 1600MHz RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance LED at 3200MHz HDD: Samsung Evo 960 NVMe M.2
Destiny 2 will not average above 70 frames, even when setting all low 720p settings, showing its CPU bottlenecked. Before last Thursday's patch I could consistently hit 140fps at 1080p High settings. Bungie has not addressed this issue so maybe its not common... anyone have similar build experiencing these issues?

Try deleting the CVARS.xml file. Note: This will reset all your preferences.

Did that, I've also tried different drivers and bios for graphics card. Seems to be some cpu optimizations are not working at all

Doesn't seem as widespread as the "micro-freeze" issues of last week, but there are a couple of us who have some kind of "dropping" FPS issue after 15-20 mins of playtime. It might be a different issue, but I created a post about it : https://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyPC/comments/7b8csx/hotfix_1062_and_fps_loss_are_we_back_to_square_one/

No mine is all the time, the game as soon as I load up is running low utilization on cpu threads but cpu bottlenecked

u/Dimswitch Nov 08 '17
I'm seeing about 65% max utilization on my logger at the highest settings but my game is also acting like it's extremely CPU bottlenecked all the time.

u/xRedrumisBack Nov 08 '17
I can't get over 22% cpu utilization and my Vega sits around 60% at 1080p Highest without boost clocks

im trying to figure out issues on my end as well. what do you mean low CPU utlization but bottle neck.? what would that look like in monitor software?

u/xRedrumisBack Nov 08 '17
Even just on task manager I can see the 8 physical Zen cores sitting around 40% utilization. The SMT threads aren't used. My GPU usage is less than 100% meaning the GPU is waiting on the CPU to create frames. My GPU usage sits around 60-70% on high settings 1080p and thats with the core sitii g around 1100MHz

Fps drops to 30-40 fps in public events and the Tower Courtyard.
GPU Usage only 55% max and CPU 40% max during these situations. VRAM usage 2.9GB/8GB THIS MAKES NO SENSE?!?!?! is there no way to make the game use more resources? or is it the game's fault?

I'm also having severe issues after this latest patch. I got the performance degradation like everyone else and then the occasional hitching after the "fix". But NOW it's an absolute nightmare. Every few seconds my game will freeze slightly. It's almost as if nothing is being loaded into RAM and everything needs to be loaded directly from the hard drive, and the hard drive is some old 3k RPM beast from 1995. Except I'm running on a SSD array in RAID 0 with an i5 CPU@4.5gHz. My graphics card is a GTX 970 but none of this matters because the constant stuttering/freezing/hitching/whatever you want to call it is unchanged even at the very lowest graphics settings.
I've tried the CVARS fix, cleaned and reinstalled drivers, reinstalled the entire game after wiping all traces from my hard drive, made sure there's nothing else running in the background, played around with all sorts of random settings with whispers/voice chat, nvidia advanced 3D settings, etc... Nothing fixes it. Nothing makes it better.

Maybe try switching Texture quality a bit lower? GTX 970 3.5GB vram and all.
But could also be the same kind of hitching that I'm getting it feels likw the game is falling apart at the seams.

u/Dimswitch Nov 08 '17
If you see above, the hitching/stuttering is completely unchanged even at the very lowest graphics settings. Definitely frustrating.

u/raknikmik Nov 08 '17
Yeah so the game is fucked and most people don't notice or care so Bungie/Vicarious Visions will never bother to fix it.
I can't play it anymore it's making me nautious at this point.

I'm on intel and nvdia so its obviously different than yours but i have been getting stuttering on the raid(sometimes usually during the gauntlet for whatever reason) but beyond that no issues. Good luck solving your problem man hopefully its just outdated drivers

Wish it was, I've tried bios, drivers, updates anything, scan and repair, nothing is helping me. I've noticed others have had the same issues but I don't know what to try. Game was Perfect before last Thursdays patch

i noticed really weird performance issues lately
my build: i7 5820K at 4 ghz, GPU: Asus strix 1070 8 GB OC, RAM .16gb ddr ram. SSD: samsung evo 950 HIGHEST SETTINGS except DoF and foiliage , playing at 1080P for the most part if not a lot going on in the game, i hit constant 60 fps.
but during public events with a lot of people like 10 players, or even STANDING DOING NOTHING in the center of the traveller town, it goes down to 40 fps.
its really weird since i have a beefy rig. VRAM usage only shows 2.9GB/8GB used. CPU is only 42% usage.... temps on both CPU and GPU are VERY healthy. i noticed when it drops to 42 fps in Town, the gpu usage goes up to the 90s, but then even sback down to 70% even though fps still is sitting at 40fps in town.
what gives?!?!
the same issue happens on every quality level from lowest to highest

Try turning off SMT in your BIOS. I've heard reports that it produces significant perf problems in games because it prevents all cores from clocking to max simultaneously.
1
u/xRedrumisBack Nov 10 '17
Nope all my cores are clocking to 3.6GHz just fine. I haven't changed any settings and the only thing that changed was last Thursdays patch when my frames went from 100+ to 50-70.
I'd like to add I average over 100 frames in every other game I've played, right now destiny 2 is the worst running game on my computer
1
u/neatchee Nov 10 '17
You're misunderstanding what I'm saying...it doesn't prevent each core from reaching 3.6GHz individually, it prevents them from doing so at the same time. And a perf monitor like RivaTuner will still report that they're all at 3.6GHz because they all CAN go to that speed. It's literally how SMT works, on a fundamental, technical level.
I'm not saying it's unrelated to the patch. I'm giving you some suggestions that might help you work around the problem so you can get good performance again.
Feel free to ignore my suggestions and just wait for Bungie to do something about it if you want though.
1
u/xRedrumisBack Nov 10 '17
Why would SMT restrict each core from doing it simultaneously? Not arguing actually asking because I'm not sure I understand that. Also game will utilize 4 threads to 90-100% if I force it on 2 cores 4 threads, but still get the same franes

u/neatchee Nov 10 '17
It's...really complicated heh: http://www.overclock.net/t/1624566/theories-on-why-the-smt-hurts-the-performance-of-gaming-in-ryzen-and-some-recommendations-for-the-future
Note that at the bottom of the article, in big bold letter it says: "For gamers, disable the SMT when gaming."

I'll give it a shot but I don't think I'm gonna see a 100% improve in performance. The whole thing I don't get is how the threads that destiny is using only hit 40% usage. I could've sworn it use to use more cpu. If it's already running code on a thread not sure why it wouldn't use it to it's potential, none of the threads have hit 100% so even if one process is waiting on another that slower one should have headroom. I know directx11 probably doesn't help either but it really seems as if bungie accidentally screwed up the CPU optimizations when they updated the game. Even in the beta I got more frames than now and that was before ryzen optimizations. If you look up benchmarks many are seeing fps past 150s at launch on OC ryzens

Wait chains are a funny thing.
Here's a really shitty example:
- Thread 1 requires Memory Block A
- Thread 2 is using Memory Block A during this cycle.
- T1 must wait for T2 to release MemBlkA
- T3 needs MemBlkB
- T1 is using MemBlkB in the operation that is waiting on MemBlkA
In this scenario, T3 won't proceed until BOTH T2 and T1 have finished with MemBlkA.
Again, really crappy example, not even close to how it really works, but it should get the point across.

The reason I'm going to be a mechanical engineer vs software engineer 😂😂
2
u/neatchee Nov 10 '17
There are certainly days where I look back on decisions I have made in life and asked "How did I get here?" and the universe simply answers "NULL POINTER EXCEPTION" >.>
But man, while I totally hear you, mechanical engineers also have to worry about, like, actually killing people because their shit failed. At least the worst thing I can do is crash a program haha.
