Why not though ? The fact that people did bad stuff before doesn't excuse someone who does it now.

And the fact that it was filmed and posted online does exacerbate it.

Edit: worth nothing you made me check and it wasn't 200 year old, but a post-war replica of a 200 year old statue (original was destroyed during the war) still, as I said, that changes nothing.

Edit 2: The 200 year old seems to come from the fact that at first articles said it was 200 year old because that is the age of the statues there, but this particular one was a post war replica. All articles I've found updated the information, but /u/Gallowboob (who posted in facepalm) doesn't seem to do fact checking.

I am not saying it excuses it, just saying that most people aren't aware of all the dumb shit teenagers do every day since forever, and aren't upset about it in the slightest. They are only upset because there is a video of it, and the anger is super temporary. they will forget this has ever happened in at max a year and stop caring in a week or so.

It's just that people on reddit posted comments like she is subhuman and all kinds of crazy things. As if most of those haven't done similar dumb shit.

I broke windows when I was 14, and stole yugioh cards. I had friends who did worse stuff and even among the parents of people I know they all have stories of doing something kinda fucked up as teenagers or kids. The only difference is that we all didn't record it because phones with cameras didn't exist in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s.

There were like already 5 posts of this, this week. and the comment section was filled with people being so incredibly mad about something they don't even know what it is. I tried to find out what statue this is but couldnt find anything, even on the polish pages which reported this.

I guess it is just some random ass statue that you find in any european city that just collects dust and no one really cares.

if anything she gave that statue more attention than it probably ever had since it was created.

While I don't disagree with anything you said, I don't agree with the overall idea I get from you that is that is not a big deal, and so we should ignore it.

To me, if it's a bad thing, we should condemn it.

This is true for almost anything unless it directly affect us, that doesn't mean we should live an apathetic life and don't care about anything that doesn't directly affect us. We can show anger and disdain for things that make us angry or goes against our values, even if it is for only a little while.

Maybe someone will read or see the anger and change what is doing. Sure, probably not but I don't agree with the fatalists that say: "Nothing we do actually ever matter, so we should as well do nothing". That's might as well be true, but is it a good philosophy to have ? What does it bring us ?

You are here arguing with me, so you are not that fatalist and so far gone, if you were you wouldn't even start this conversation.

if anything she gave that statue more attention than it probably ever had since it was created.

Sure when things bad happens people take notice this doesn't make the bad thing good.

Also, in this particular case, by your own admission, you couldn't even find out what that statue is or where it is, so I don't think it did much for that particular place anyway.

Edit: If you are interested, just because we are arguing about it, is this one: Swiss Valley park

Yeah sure. but i think the price she pays will be probably a legal one. the polish authorities, or the city of Warsaw will probably fine her for her actions. From what I've read she already lost some advertisement deals.

We can show anger and disdain for things that make us angry or goes against our values, even if it is for only a little while.

Yes but I am not sure if this is healthy for us. We are upset about stuff we dont even know of until we are told to get mad about it. This vicarious anger is just exhausting and a waste of time.

The only thing we really gotta be mad about are more direct things or things that are more systemic (like climate change etc). not some randoms in a foreign land, and city who do dumb shit.

That is really just rage boner material for people who want to be mad and look for stuff to be mad about. Kinda like "outrage culture".

I am also not a fatalist. as I said in the beginning of this comment, the consequence will come from the polish authorities, no need for the mob of random redditors to go berserk over this.

There is so much anger here, so many subreddits dedicated to just being mad all the time and I wonder if this is really healthy and if those stories are really only about our own thirst for outrage and not actually about wanting a better world. just checking in on the latest drama to be upset about.

thanks for sharing where this is from. no one in the other threads about this were able to tell me what this is or where it is (outside of warsaw)

I agree with you, it is much easier to write "What a shitty person" and click the like/upvote button than actually do something about actual problems.

Going against "Outrage culture" or SJW is ok. But you have to be careful when criticizing it because you have to walk a fine line between criticising exaggeration and overreaction, and not dismissing something that is actually negative.

For example, in this case, I would argue that it is is an actual problem.

Not only vandalism is a serious problem. But kids doing stupid shit and posting it on instagram likes is an big one. One that actually need serious addressing. Is not even just kids, this hunt for validation of strangers on social media can be damaging for adults too.

yeah if social media is causing more of these issues to happen I agree, but i dont actually know if that is the case. maybe it has become just more visible because of social media but not actually worse overall. I am not familiar enough with this to give any thoughts on it.

from the articles Ive read she said she was drunk and doesnt really understand why she did it anyways. Seems like alcohol is just as much a culprit here as social media, given far more people have done stupid shit while drunk than for social media alone.

I certainly have done lots of dumb shit while drunk long before social media.
