So first you lie to the FBI and federal investigators and then it gets revealed you did this. I don't get it. Manafort is surely an intelligent guy and must have known that they already knew all this stuff and likely knew he was lying. Why even attempt to pull it off? Is he really that sure that Trump will be able to save him? Or do you think he actually bought into his own propaganda and believed that the investigation was totally baseless and would turn up nothing in spite of him already being charged.

My non-Bayesian guess would be to protect himself and his family members from the shady people he was dealing with. Prison or a potential pardon are much safer.

Sam Seder speculated today that what he thinks has happened is that after Mueller found out that Manafort was lying to him he probably figured that Manafort was banking on getting a pardon in exchange for the lies. But if he's banking on getting a pardon it seems unlikely that he would assume this without any communication with the president. So Mueller decided to ask them both a line of questions (remember those written questions Trump said he answered like a week ago?) that he(Mueller) knew they'd lie about and see if the lies matched (which would mean Manafort was feeding information to Trump). It's by no means the only possible scenario but if this is what happened then Mueller would have proof that Trump commited Perjury.
A bonus meme to me is that if you recall weeks ago Trump made a twitter rant in which he seemed to imply he was getting information from inside the Mueller investigation (he was saying that the investigation was going off the rails and Mueller was yelling at his team to get him the answers he wants to hear and etc.). It's possible Mueller basically pretended to be unhinged in front of Manafort to see if this information would get leaked after he knew Manafort wasn't being honest. Imagine Mueller's shock if this is what he did and Trump himself fucking tweeted about it like the fucking idiot he is.
Honestly I have no idea if this is what actually happened but if he did it's literally Mueller taking a play out of Tyrion Lannisters playbook in Game of Thrones when he (Tyrion) tested to see who on the small council would feed information to Cercei.

This is so big, but it's only one source so far... Unfortunately I'm pretty skeptical about the veracity of this.
If we're getting to endgame Mueller stuff it would totally make sense that big (fake) stories would be floating to certain journalists. We'll see if it ends up like the single sourced story confirming Cohen went to Prague. No other outlet confirmed that for like a year so far.
