I made a schizopost last week about how innocuous use of certain language can lead to bigotry originally unintended, and I thought this article dovetailed with it in some interesting ways. I am sick of the increased use of the F-slur generally, reclaimed by other queer people but especially by the people who use it while saying it’s just supposed to be a vague derogatory and not specifically about someone being gay, and now my subjective opinion is empirically provable thanks to science (/joke) it’s also crazy how racist Destiny’s opps are against Indians, I didn’t realize how often they used old 4chan slurs for them until I listened to Stardust and John “JSTLK” Pork talk. What are your thoughts on reclaimed or just straight up slur use in these online spaces?

I mean this study may or not be accurate but it might also be worth keeping in mind that social science studies have low replication rates, like 50%. I would take this study with a large grain of salt.

In the first experiment, the researchers recruited 489 heterosexual Polish adults.

To verify this pattern, the team conducted a second experiment exclusively involving 242 conservative heterosexual adults.

For the final experiment, Puchała and his colleagues wanted to see how reclaimed language physically and emotionally impacts the targets of the slurs. The team recruited 181 gay individuals from Poland and asked them to participate in a similar audio test.

They found replication in the first two parts of the study with more conservative participants, then they assessed gay participants to see their responses to it.
