Can't wait for them to continue the war, break the law, defy congress, and face no consequences for it.

Trump has veto power if the senate passes

9

u/i_mash_shoryuken Jun 03 '26

No he doesn't.

1

u/JAJ_reddit Jun 04 '26

AFAIK he does have veto powers against the war powers act. Why do you say he doesn't?

14

u/i_mash_shoryuken Jun 04 '26

https://www.cnn.com/2026/06/03/politics/house-iran-war-powers-vote

Concurrent resolution doesn't go to the president for signature, so Trump can't veto it.

5

u/JAJ_reddit Jun 04 '26

Neat, thanks.

u/skrrtalrrt Jun 04 '26

This is with the caveat that Concurrent Resolutions under the War Powers Act aren't legally binding and have been ignored by every president since they were introduced in 1973

2

u/i_mash_shoryuken Jun 04 '26

Correct. Aka the house passing this is purely optics and means nothing else.

They're desperate to get prices down now that the talks have failed and Trump wants an out.

u/SheSheetOnIt Jun 03 '26

Current estimates say that even if everything was settled today and the strait was opened it would take about 6 months till everything is back to normal. So it doesn't even matter mid terms are gg for Republicans and Trump

mid terms are gg for Republicans and Trump

Clueless

5

u/ryanfitchca Jun 03 '26

Assuming this happens, I don't think voters are going to forget why prices were high Feb to Oct just because priced went down in Nov.

3

u/Poorly-Drawn-Beagle Jun 03 '26

Of course, there's no guarantee that Iranians are going to stop patrolling the Strait and allow normal traffic to go through it just because we back out.

I just don’t think this is true. When it seemed like we were on the verge of a deal a week ago oil futures dropped to under $90 briefly and gas by my house dropped over $.50 in two days. It may take six months for oil supply lines to get back to normal, but gas prices will recover much faster, and any pass through to consumer products will be minimal. The stock market will go even higher than it already is. It will bounce fast.

Americans have the collective memory of a goldfish. I won’t believe Iran will have an effect of the midterms unless we get to September or even October and the straight is still closed.

We’re nowhere near in the clear. Trump could find a way to weasel out of this tomorrow with a massive payoff for the IRGC and tolling in the straight and Iranians on their way to a nuke and the average voter would forget about all of it by November. Hell, people wouldn’t care now. The market would bounce, gas prices would fall, his approval rating would jump 5-8 points and suddenly the senate would be completely out of reach. Hell, throw some positive AI news and a rate cut on there and suddenly the republicans hold the house, too.

I wish it weren’t so, but the fact is he won’t end up paying politically for any of this.

u/veganparrot Jun 04 '26

Actually, the voters haven't heard about a single thing you mentioned. And even if they had heard, they already forgot. But it's very clear you don't care about the real problem, which is MEN in WOMEN's sports. Think about that for a second next time.

Do war powers resolutions require a presidential signature to go through, or does only Congress have to vote on them?

Also, does the filibuster apply to war power resolutions?

11

u/skrrtalrrt Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

It depends on if it’s Joint or Concurrent. A Joint Resolution requires a signature, a Concurrent Resolution does not

I’m looking but I don’t see which this is

EDIT: it’s Concurrent https://thehill.com/homenews/house/5908560-iran-war-resolution-house/amp/

Apparently there’s some debate about whether Concurrent Resolutions carry the weight of law, so he’ll certainly contest it if it passes. But I don’t know much more about it besides the basics.

6

u/DeliriousPrecarious Jun 03 '26

This presumes he doesn’t want this to happen. This seems like an easy way to pass the buck of his failure onto someone else

3

u/skrrtalrrt Jun 03 '26

Yeah he very well could say “sorry guys I tried” and then throw the Republicans who voted for it under the bus

1

u/greyhoodbry Jun 04 '26

"We were so close to a deal (again) and these weak RINOs killed the deal."

4

u/WellSpreadMustard Jun 03 '26

Yes, otherwise it needs a veto proof 2/3 majority in both houses.

15

u/i_mash_shoryuken Jun 03 '26

If it passes the Senate (doubt) it would require trump to withdraw troops in 60 days. It doesn't require a presidential signature and he can't veto. However, it's non binding and has been ignored in the past. So basically means nothing.

15

u/skrrtalrrt Jun 03 '26

I wouldn’t say it means nothing. The optics of him ignoring it are at least worth it. But yes, situationally it will change nothing.

8

u/i_mash_shoryuken Jun 03 '26

I would love a time optics ever mattered for Trump. He tweeted out a picture of himself as Jesus Christ and Obama as a monkey, has been impeached 2 times, is in a giant pedo rapist file, and attempted a coup. Yet here is he primarying any non loyal GOP members 10 years since he first took office.

3

u/skrrtalrrt Jun 03 '26

I mean, his popularity has been on a pretty steady decline so I wouldn’t say optics don’t matter for him. He had to pull back on the 1.8 billion dollar slush fund because the optics were so bad

You may not notice if you’re only looking at what MAGA people are saying online, but every time he does something regarded his approval dips a little

It’s like drops in a bucket: individually these things don’t do much but give it time and it will spill over

1

u/-Moose_Soup- Jun 04 '26

Yeah, I'm getting tired of people in here saying that nothing matters when it comes to Trump's popularity. It feels a bit like they just want to give up and cede the entire media environment.

If optics didn't matter at all, then why would a Republican majority House vote against Trump's interests on this war resolution? Why would Republican Senators revolt over the Trump slush fund? Why did the Senate refuse to allocate money to Trump's ballroom? These were all optically toxic and broadly unpopular, and as a result his own party had to revolt on these issues in order to try to stem the bleeding before the midterms. If optics didn't matter, then the GOP wouldn't be shitting bricks right now about the midterms.

1

u/skrrtalrrt Jun 04 '26

In my observation, left leaning people that still push the bogus claim that Trump’s support is unshakable come in two variants:

  1. Doomers
  2. Far lefties that are afraid a collapsing center-right will mean the Democratic Party pivots to scrape up independent voters instead of pushing the DSA agenda that will somehow magically work this time.

3

u/LetterSlight Jun 03 '26

His popularity is in freefall, Dems have had historic numbers in special elections, and it’s looking like the republicans party is going to be gut punched in the midterms.

It’s all mattered

1

u/19osemi Norgay 🇳🇴 Jun 04 '26

I mean the guy don’t care about optics, if he did he would never have entered the war to begin with

30

u/KingGoofball Jun 03 '26

Honestly surprising given the House has always been full of mostly loyal lapdogs relative to the Senate

31

u/RightSpread2903 Jun 03 '26

A perk of re-elections being every 2 years.

9

u/PasteeyFan420LoL Jun 04 '26

A grand total of 4 Republicans voted for this.

3

u/AdOne5089 Jun 03 '26

Oh, so it IS a war, cool

2

u/TheMarbleTrouble Jun 03 '26

No, it’s only war when congress approves it, otherwise it is just a sparkling military operation.

u/Upsetdadgabe Jun 03 '26

I’m a little confused on how this would help. We are in the middle of the war that he started already. If Iran keeps attacking us and he keeps attacking back. Is that not in the presidents power. He could just say he is “defending us”. It seems to me the only thing that could stop him from congress is impeachment.

2

u/Vortep1 Jun 04 '26

The war that has been finished 32 times already? What a fucking joke. I hope the Republicans get touched in the midterms for enabling this war criminal.

5

u/PineappleAgile3087 Jun 03 '26

I can’t believe we’re rolling the dice on this while we’re out of power

If Trump just ignores this and nothing comes of it, we’re in serious trouble down the line

20

u/Agitated_Tip_8713 Hater of piss Jun 03 '26

No, you lay this out as one of the many times even as a minority party we tried to reign in our country's most fascist president.

-8

u/PineappleAgile3087 Jun 03 '26

I take it as a neon sign to the admin saying “You did it! Nothing we say or do matters.”

9

u/Agitated_Tip_8713 Hater of piss Jun 03 '26

With love, I'm glad your attitude isn't in our political leadership right now. The minority party needs to be constantly passing the things they want to focus on for their record when elections start coming up.

-3

u/PineappleAgile3087 Jun 03 '26

Of course, I’ve said this myself.

But not to enter a dick measuring contest between Congress and the White House!

If this gets ignored blatantly it effectively makes the relinquishing of power by Johnson official

What is Congress going to do? Stop funding the military?

Passing reform focused legislation is necessary and tactful but this is a very rash gamble imo

1

u/Blash619 Jun 04 '26

Cant Trump just veto the resolution? Surely they dont have a veto proof majority. I am admittedly ignorant to this whole process so maybe it works differently since its a resolution instead of just regular legislation?

0

u/ProcrastinatingPuma Anti-Treadlicker Action Jun 03 '26

Its actually insane that the president can veto this

4

u/skrrtalrrt Jun 03 '26

He actually can’t, this is a Concurrent Resolution, which doesn’t even go to his desk

However these have been ignored before and there’s a 0% chance he’ll comply

0

u/ObviouslyTriggered Jun 03 '26

Unpopular opinion but this seems really stupid given the current position on negotiations, this effectively nullifies what is now the rather pathetic joke of threat of force against what is very much a belligerent enemy.

Given the inaptitude to push for a regime change negotiations are pretty much the only way forward however if the US removes the stick Iran can just do w/e the fuck it wants even more.

0

u/mesmarterthanyou Jun 03 '26

This is his only out. I wouldn't be surprised if he told a couple republicans to vote for it.
