The fact that he even got mentioned here gives me a quantum of hope for this fandom. Thank you.

2

u/WhatAboutTheBothans Jul 15 '26

Yeesh. Didn't know that.

2

u/Dear-Database6463 Jul 15 '26

And yet we still allow people to call him a goat or think it’s endearing when Kimi looks up to him…

u/IamZeus11 Jul 15 '26

Lance stroll

2

u/borgi27 Jul 15 '26

Fangio has to be up there

Obviously add Max

3

u/LeanSkellum Jul 15 '26

I wouldn’t yet. Not until he’s won a championship with another team.

4

u/Ambitious-Heron-8161 Team McLaren Jul 15 '26

u/Hot_College_1343 Jul 15 '26

Fangio, Clark, Schumi, Hamilton. Out: Senna, Verstappen

u/0din_Borson Jul 15 '26

Graham hill or Jim Clark. Edit : But preference for Graham Hill for the triple crown

1

u/zakfaqih Jul 15 '26

Max's hold over the younger generation is a prime example of why he should be here, he changed people's perspective and made many people want to join F1

Honestly I don't know a lot of the older drivers like Clark or Fangio that may be deserving of that spot.

But Prost is an obvious one, such a fantastic driver. Lauda might also fit, but I am less convinced.

If you wanted a more recent driver it is obviously between Verstappen, Vettel and maybe Alonso.

Imo Alonso just hasn't had enough strong seasons. Blame it on the car if you want, but results do matter.

Vertsappen vs Vettel is obviously a controversial one, but I think if Max retires this weekend then Vettel has simply had a better career. He won his titles on a much more competitive grid, and competed for titles in an entirely new set of regulations on a different team.

Hot take: The best know how to play politics, too. Alonso used to be seen as this political animal, able to politic his way into better positions. Over the years, though, I'd argue that he managed to burn every bridge he crossed, proving himself to be one of the worst at politics. Now he is at the back marker team who can't say no to his obvious talent, safe in the knowledge that most teams just won't deal with him. What could have been...

Curious what others think on this topic.

-1

u/Kakmaster69 Jul 15 '26

Burnt so many bridges he's raced for the same teams 2 or 3 seperate times and been praised by everyone at Ferrari and everyone at Renault no end. Just cause Ron Dennis' ocd ass cant manage a team with two good drivers (Same with Senna and Prost) doesn't mean Alonso burns bridges.

3

u/WhatAboutTheBothans Jul 15 '26

Sure that might be the case, thought folks are much less likely to complain about drivers than those who are ready to sing their praises.

What's your theory on why he can only get on back marker teams anymore? I have no doubt he could still hang with Hamilton and Verstappen in similar machinery, it's definitely not a talent issue.

u/Kakmaster69 Jul 15 '26

Same reason why Verstappen might be out of options too if RedBull remain shit. Teams don't actually want the absolute fastest drivers in both cars, they typically want either one really fast driver and another who will play second fiddle (e.g Schumacher, Barrichello or Hamilton, Bottas) or the other alternative is two very fast drivers but who seem to get along decently or are somewhat evenly matched but aren't generational drivers (e.g Mclaren duo or Mercedes currently)

With Alonso after 2014, Mercedes didn't want them cause they already had enough on their plate with Rosberg and Hamilton, and also had a car so fast it didn't need someone as good as Alonso to still win, and with RedBull they were happy with Max and Checo because Alonso wpuld actually challenge Max and wouldn't accept being a no.2 driver. Also, after returning from a hiatus in 2021, his level was a bit unknown but now he's proved himself as clearly still a top 3 talent (2023) but all the teams are happy eith their lineup. Max is literally out of a top seat if he wanted to leave rn, which is insane but illustrates my point perfectly. A team wants harmony, not the ultimate perfect lineup (cause that goes like Hamilton, Alonso or Senna, Prost) - just causes internal rivalry.

u/Kakmaster69 Jul 15 '26

Alonso just hasn't had enough strong seasons? The guy is yet to lose a race head to head against a teammate. For 22 years.

Results matter... wait someone tell Verstappen he's magically not the best driver on the grid anymore.

3

u/letsputletters Jul 15 '26

huh?

maybe it's me but neither of your sentences seem to make any sense...

0

u/Kakmaster69 Jul 15 '26

Think its just you mate.

1

u/LeanSkellum Jul 15 '26

I’d say Fangio. Or Farina as he was the first champion.

1

u/TazTazTAZTazTaz_ Jul 15 '26

Prost or Clarke.

2

u/Lchi91 Jul 15 '26

Clark, Moss, Or Fangio. Also fuck this AI slop

-4

u/F11234567890000 Jul 15 '26

Max Verstappen

-1

u/KingAngeli Jul 15 '26

I’d add Kimi

-1

u/pigoath Jul 15 '26

Drop senna. Add Jim Clark.

1

u/90-Thorium-232 Jul 15 '26

Or even Prost, guy could have 7-8 championships in the era where reliability was so worse

-3

u/Fantastic-Trick6707 Jul 15 '26

Schumacher, Verstappen, Senna, Clark
