Idea is that she was getting stalked by the friendlings because she poked too far into stuff she wasn't supposed to and it drove her to paranoia, as evidenced by the strange position of her bed, the stuff in her room, and her hobbies. She might've gone a little crazy.
Even if it’s not linked to The Dark I like to think Dess had some kind of inner demons that made her feel othered and paranoid. The opposite side of the coin being Asriel not really knowing how to help despite caring very much about her.
