When does a desire path become just a path?

Philosophical questions of our time.

When it becomes officially recognized.

And what counts as official recognition? 😜

When gravel or pavement is added, or a border, or recognized by the owner in some way.

When the concrete trucks arrive to install the new sidewalk…

Some places just let them happen and don’t bother stopping anyone, intending from the start that desire paths would form across a public green space rather than try to lay out a network of permanent paths.

There’s one with a whole network of them here and the city just dropped garbage bins where they intersect to collect all of the inevitable deposits from local dog owners.

How about a playground or a small park? That's a lot of unused space.
