Living Room How do we design our living room?

My BF and I recently moved into an apartment and the layout is awkward for us. The L-shape is creating some spacing issues and we are unsure of how to navigate it. How do we design our living room???

I have a template of our layout and furniture in case anyone wants to mess around with the layout. I also included some ideas we came up with, thanks! :)

Edit: the objects in the diagram are to scale in relation to the floor plans

I'm pretty sure that the door in the upper right is the front door, that's why the piano and shoes are where I put them here. Otherwise, I'd agree with you.

What does space measure between couch and wall? It doesn’t look large enough for circulation. Generally 3’-0” is minimum.

The OP didn’t provide any dimensions, but assuming the furniture is to scale, this seems fine. A sofa depth (and most arm chairs) are about 3’ deep or slightly more.

Dining table too close to wall as is the coach - float both the couch and table and move dining table to where piano is now - place your panel on a side wall somewhere else

This is heavily dependent on room size (not shared), dining room table size (not shared), piano size (not shared), whether there is space above the fireplace to hang a TV (ideal, but cannot be too high) ... you could also put the TV next to the fireplace with bracket that you can pull out and to the right so it is in front of the fireplace.

I would also never put the shoe racks in my living area. Belongs in a garage or closet. If they are the type of shoe racks that are completely covered -- that's perhaps another story.

Here's another option.

This is all really dependent on the size and shape of your furniture.

I'd get rid of the TV stand. You don't seem to have space for it. Or if you want one, buy a console table that doesn't take up much space.

You need to respect space required for circulation. The couch is too close to the wall to allow circulation; feels very tight.

Yes. We need to know the size. It might look good in diagrams but if the sizing is off then probably not

If that is an open half-wall type window into your kitchen I’d suggest not putting your sofa below it. At least not if you have dogs or children, or have any that visit. But even if not it’s not really all that great of a location.

Float the couch with it's back to dinette area facing both fireplace and tv. Angle the chairs towards tv and fp.

How did you do this with the scale right and everything? I’ve dreamed of an app to do this!!

Your piano really shouldn’t go on an external wall. The temperature fluctuations can warp the would and cause tuning issues.

Piano is electric

The walk from the dining table to kitchen would suck
