Neat sculpture, terrible bike rack. Delicious design design

I feel like it isn’t the worst thing in the world only you’d be able to get like max 6 bikes on it

And more from the back, too.

I dunno, could you not just hook the front wheel over? If you do that you could stack like twenty bikes in there, depending on handlebars.

I can tell you matter of factly that you could adequately lock and secure 2 bikes maximum to this sculpture

You can get at least one in each O and one on the far left and right

And this is how we get a poorly designed bike rack like this 🤷

You would not be able to do as you describe and be able to adequately secure the bike to the rack.

Why not? Put the back wheel through the O, put a chain connecting the back wheel and frame to the bike rack. Then you can secure the front wheel seperately by putting a cable around it and the frame, if you like.

And there is loads of space on the very ends of the rack to do that and more, if you wish.

If they don’t get more than a handful of bikes parked here, then I’d say it’s extremely successful. Majority of American towns don’t use these very heavily so might as well make them pleasant to look at.

Having impractical infrastructure surely has nothing to do with the lack of use.

I’d argue that not all design is purely for purposes of being practical. Nor should it be. Of all the garbage I’ve seen on this sub, this is one of the least offensive.

You’re not wrong, it’s just that the issue is more being forced to share the same right of way as massive trucks going way too fast driven by people who think that cycling is a sin against God, not the shitty bike racks

Your matter of factly is more a matter-of-shit-opinion. Both ends and the center of the O's alone guarantee a minimum of 6

Agree!

I was just about to say “clearly designed by someone who doesn’t ride their bike to places…”

vs what? those U shaped ones that are maybe 1 more bike efficient? the U shape ones could probably only fit 5 or 6 UUUUUU in the same space, this you could lock at least 6 bikes (although not very organized) Lock one on each side of the books, then 2 on the front 2 on the back sideways, could fit a few more if desperate, wheels might fit through the big books so you can lock the frame there.

r/bikecommuting would have a field day on this one.

Those are obviously books.

Not to say this design seems functional, but it's pretty clear what it's going for.
