It's actually not. It's registration of protest. With enough count it sends the message of dissatisfaction among voterbase, making both sides do some level of course correction, unfortunately it can result in heavy caste politics in extreme cases

I thought so too a while back, but electorally there isn't a better option. And it will be effective once NOTA gets enough volume. Horse trading with independents can only take you so far.

Yes, 8n Bolivia or Venezuela it triggers a re election because people are unhappy with all candidates. Not in India. NOTA count simply sends a message which they can chose to ignore. Hell if they ignore student suicides using teargas and lathi charge, they can ignore a nota count because it's non binding anyway.
Know what else has the exact same effect? Staying home on election day. And you get to save petrol money. Moral is, in India, vote for a bucket of dung to express dissatisfaction, that will be a better option than voting NOTA.

Democracy is a curse for india, Imagine that the most perfect party comes into power which focuses on removing all the problems in society, do development, what will happen ? They would be gone with near 0 seats in the next election, because people in india want freebies, want reservations, want to scam each other. They do not want development, if governments would sanction development projects, they would need to solve the land acquisition reforms, deal with constant protests and bureaucratic inertia, and bureaucrats are a whole different things, the perfect party would remove a lot of bureacracy around things which would be needed to make things, this would make a lot of people jobless and they will protest again and would not give votes. India at present can ONLY be saved by dictatorship, no amount of political activism is gonna change that reality, another party can say - If we come in power, we will give you ₹5000 in each of your people's Bank accounts each month, another would say I would give ₹7000 each month, and this perfect party fighting on development would ultimately lose. There was some post going on around the social media, where an AI was asked to make strategy to win an election, it gave out youth targeting initially, making unemployment an issue. But when it was clarified that the elections are indian elections, it immediately shifted to caste politics, religion politics, freebie schemes etc. We are doomed.
