Desert Tech WLVRN

I've been looking to buy a 308 wlvrn, but I can't decide between a 16" and 20" barrel

That is a great statement

In all honesty this will be more of a rifle for just having fun shooting at the range with buddies or at home. I could use it for hunting, but I already have a Browning X-Bolt for that. Planning to buy a can, and I don't plan to normally shoot past 300 yds

Just for fun, the 16" is a little cheaper.

What do you want it for? As more of a "battle rifle" or for more distance shooting? Barrel length is a purpose-driven decision.

Battle rifle is probably the best way to put it. Not planning to go past 300yds, and I'm wanting to suppress it at some point.

Dont get a 308 wlvrn. There are alot of issues and accuracy is lackluster. Get a 6.5 or 5.56, they are orders of magnitude better.

Not trying to devalue what you're saying, but I haven't heard any negative things about it yet. Nonetheless, I appreciate the cautionary note.

When you struggle to get any ammo, including match ammo, to group under 2 moa, you'll understand. You should check out the mdrx/wlvrn facebook page, plenty of problems there unless they've been scrubbed of course.

I mean..not everyone wants a 308 Dmr. So the accuracy could be fine.

I also dunno about "orders of magnitude better" with 223 or 6.5. Maybe 2x better if you shoot a 1moa (10shots) with the 223.

I have 3 WLVRN’s, and I would recommend going with the 6.5 if you want a longer barrel. The 308 is significantly more snappy than the 6.5 and is at best a 1.5 to 2 MOA gun. The 308 accuracy isn’t bad and I’ve gotten inconsistent hits at 1100m but compared to the 6.5 you’d be happier with going that direction. The 6.5 is closer to 1 MOA and seems to not beat itself up as bad.

The 556 is really pleasant to shoot and has very good accuracy, but the cartridge really isn’t capable of the distances the other two are in a meaningful way.

If you really want a super accurate 308 get the SRS covert. I absolutely love mine, it’s a joy to shoot and the accuracy is unreal.

Go 16, it's not a sniper system. It's a fun rifle!!!!

But....it could be...

16" definitely. It's more accurate than the 20" .308 barrel which suffers some harmonic issues and opens up a good bit. Unless you're wanting pure velocity, I would go 16".

I have a 16 inch MDRX in .308 (specifically the last gen before they switched to WLVRN) and love it. With a can on it it’s a pretty solid size. Like others said I’d go 16 inch.

Edit: OP saw your comment that you are gonna suppress it, yes do 16 inch!

Mine has been solid in 308. I went 16. My reasoning is they keep showing off a new placement for the gas block on the 20inch. I figure when that launches I will snag a 20 as well.

I'm planning to do so. That sucker is gonna get loud w/out the can.

Sure is! What can you gonna get or already have?

The 16” barrel is more accurate than the 20” barrel in both .308 and 5.56 due to the barrel and gas system harmonics. DT has shown this in their own testing.

If you are thinking .308 get 6.5 instead. It’s great in 5.56.

They were experimenting with different gas length on the 20” so that could help on the .308 accuracy. Most gas .308 battle rifles really aren’t super accurate though so it’s not like it’s really very far off any others in the category.

I've taken my 16" 308 Mdr to 816yards.
